Wangland Meetup

Full English Brexit Meetup - do you need to rant about 'Kippers, commiserate with likeminded folks and meet MeFites near you? Join us fellow traveller. Come, come inside.
Hey folks, Midlands and North of Wangland Represent. Anyone fancy a get together that isn't in that there London where we can talk shop and put names to faces and all that other malarkey? Suggested within the The Full English Brexit post.

I'm hoping we can get folks together from all over. No particular preference as to a date, time or location. Whatever fits the majority of folks. Pipe up if you're free any time soon and we'll try to hash out the details. I've suggested Leeds as a reasonable meeting point for people - close enough to Manchester, Sheffield, Derby, Nottingham and so on. Open to alternative suggestions of course.

Chin chin!

You have my full support!
(But I live in London and almost certainly won't be coming, but I've added to my activity in case I happen to be in the North at the time.)

Near Liverpool, but would travel happily. On the off-chance anybody is interested in Liverpool, Dr. Duncan's has decent beer, and is within an easy stagger of Lime Street Station. (Though Leeds always sounds pretty good to us.)

I would propose an outdoor meetup, but the summer weather has been as interesting as the times, so maybe that is not such a good idea! Sowerby Bridge or Hebden would be suggested locations.

Leeds is good for me, but I can get to the 'pool via the same train that skybluepink would use to get out of it.

I could be persuaded.

yes please!

May I suggest that the conversation doesn't have to be limited to our impending doom recent political events?

Sounds good. Leeds is easy for me, and an outdoor meetup might be fun.

I am more than happy for the conversation to cover any and anything. The brown colour of IRL for one. That's a subject that needs addressing.

I could be persuaded.

There's a half of bitter shandy and some dry roasted nuts in it for you ;)

Yay, the mostly-silent Mefite spouse and I are definitely in for Leeds, just waiting on the date. :)

I (Sheffield) am interested. Busy couple of months ahead, but will do my best to get across.

This looks to be firming up as a possibility so regarding dates - would a weekend be better than a weekday? Does anyone have any restrictions around their availability (school hols, childcare etc)?
posted by longbaugh at 7:38 AM on July 5, 2016

Weekend definitely best for us.
posted by skybluepink at 8:24 AM on July 5, 2016

I'm in!

Weekends would be best for me. Any weekend date is fine.

Had such a great time at the last meetup - looking forward to this one too!

Weekend is good for me!

Some options for a Leeds based venue:

Belgrave Music Hall is relatively quiet now that the students are away, it has a pizza-by-the-slice place and a burger place, and a roof terrace. They also have a street food and art market thing every second Saturday of the month (Belgrave Feast). Belgrave back story.

Within 2 mins walk there are Nash's ('best fish and chips in the universe' according to Patrick Stewart), Hansa's Ayurvedic vegetarian Gujerati restaurant, Roots vegetarian, Reliance pub/restaurant (who cure their own meats), Fuji Hiro, Bulgogi Grill, Sushiwaka and shed load of take aways should an alternative location for eating be required.

It is 10 - 15 minutes from the train station by foot.

Alternatively, Leeds market now has a food hall open during the day. Nearby you will find Maven cocktail bar and Crowd of Favours (which has lots of space and bookable tables).

These are around 10 minutes from the station.

That's the sort of helpfulness that earns someone a pint of something. Weekend is best for me too although *which* weekend is of course the fun part.

Would July 16, 23, or 30th work for people? These are the next 3 Saturdays. Just putting something out there as a starting point. (Is this Doodle poll worthy?)

I'm in if I'm available. I don't think I've got anything coming up. Weekends are best and outdoors are a plus.

As a poor person I'd prefer to steer it towards month's end once I've been paid if that is okay? I appreciate I'm not the only person that might be in that situation but any time after the 26th when I've been paid is best.
posted by longbaugh at 4:46 AM on July 8, 2016

Yeah, nearer the end of the month is preferable for us, too.
posted by skybluepink at 6:21 AM on July 8, 2016

The 30th is best for me too.
posted by champagneminimalist at 12:50 AM on July 9, 2016

Hurrah, let's say the 30th unless there are any objections?
posted by iamkimiam at 2:51 AM on July 9, 2016

30th sounds great. :)

I'll be out of Leeds on the 16th and the 30th. In town on the 23rd and most other weekends, other than the 13th August. Just FYI.

I've just found out I'm not going to be available unfortunately. This is a wee bit rubbish as I was very much looking forward to coming along but major changes at work mean that I am not going to be free. I hope you all manage to organise something and have a great day otherwise.
posted by longbaugh at 4:29 AM on July 13, 2016

aww bummer, longbaugh! Are there any dates you'd be available or was it just the 30th? We can move it around if the former. If not, let's keep on planning this and really sorry you won't make it, longbuagh.

winterhill, thank you so much for sharing and not to worry one bit. I look forward to meeting you!
posted by iamkimiam at 9:03 AM on July 13, 2016

I'd have to push it back to end of August otherwise and I don't want to mess anyone about. Hopefully it'll be a great success and I can make it along to the next one :)
posted by longbaugh at 11:30 AM on July 13, 2016

I'm happy to wait until end of August, but mainly because I don't have the time or energy to organise this for sooner (life is extra challenging/stressful these days)! If somebody else wants to run with planning this, then great and I will be there! Otherwise, we can wait until you can make it.
posted by iamkimiam at 1:20 PM on July 17, 2016

We're happy with end of August as well; the more time we have to book the stuff we need to in advance, the better. I'd offer to help organise, but I am on the other side of the Pennines, and while fairly familiar with Leeds, not quite familiar enough to feel confident about arranging anything but getting us there.
posted by skybluepink at 8:52 AM on July 18, 2016

I'm more of a maybe for the end of August. I'm possibly going on holiday then but the plans aren't finalised yet (still waiting for my passport to come back). Don't let that hold you back if people want August, I'll go if I'm in the country.
posted by koolkat at 1:24 AM on July 19, 2016

Thanks to those who have responded on the Doodle calendar, so far the date which all responders could do is August 6th. I could organise that if people want to do it, otherwise would the first weekend in September be any good for everyone including longbaugh?

I have added dates to the Doodle calendar at the end of August and beginning of September. I can't do the bank holiday weekend at the end of August, but I could do the first weekend in September.
posted by asok at 3:47 AM on July 19, 2016

Early September doesn't help much, would need to wait until the second half for me. The holiday is for the first wedding anniversary, so if we went early would be in the end August and if we went late would be the end of September. We're thinking of going early so late august to early September. I see no reason there couldn't be two meetups though, one in July and another in September?
posted by koolkat at 6:28 AM on July 19, 2016

The more the merrier, I say! I'll add the September dates to the Doodle calendar. Hopefully we can get a date then that's suitable for all.

Shall I go ahead with 6th August for those that can make it?
posted by asok at 3:39 AM on July 20, 2016

I can make August 6th too. Thanks for all the planning, everybody!
posted by iamkimiam at 3:02 PM on July 20, 2016

Looks like we can make it for the 6th, too.
posted by skybluepink at 3:27 AM on July 22, 2016

6th August works for me too!

OK, I'll make it so!
