Birmingham West Midland Meetup
posted September 28, 2010 3:39 PM   RSS

The long national nightmare of getting my visa is over and I am coming to Birmingham to study next week. Would anyone in the Midlands (and elsewhere) be interested in a meet-up the weekend of October 8/9? It's been five years since I have been in Birmingham so suggestions of great places will be greatly and gladly appreciated.

Sounds interesting. Last meetup I was at in Birmingham was in the Wellington and was very enjoyable. Although I, undoubtedly, drank too much.

Oh! I was halfheartedly thinking about the Leeds meetup (sorry, folks, trains said no) but Birmingham works for me.

The 9th suits me best but as I don't know Birmingham at all beyond the Bullring, venues would have to be down to someone else.

This is nuts, but I'm gonna see if I can make it! Because it would be awesome to add Birmingham to the list of cities we've randomly had MeFi meets in! And you deserve a good well-attended welcome to England (especially after the Visa woes you endured too)!

And maybe I can add to the list of meet-ups I say I'll attend and then end up not making it. I live fairly close, so I'll be watching this space.

Maybe. But it's a hundred miles away from me, so also maybe not. I'll see.

I think I can make this. Are you leaning towards the 8th or 9th?

You weren't the only one. In retrospect combining real ale and sushi may not have been my smartest idea ever.

How about the Barton Arms in Aston (right on Birchfield Road)? They have Thai food and Oakham Ales and stunning Victorian architecture.

Indeed. I think my stomach went into shock for about a week.

I don't know the Barton Arms, but ale and Thai food is probably a better mix than ale and sushi!.

How easy is it to get to from the central train stations? (If I can make it, I'll be coming in from outside Birmingham)

I've not eaten at the Barton Arms, but I've been told by a few people that I really ought to.

Knapah, it's opposite The Drum arts centre. You wouldn't want to walk it, but it's only 5 minutes from the centre by bus. (Or taxi, if there's a few of us going that way?)

I'd sooner something leisurely on the Saturday though, if we're going to be out of the city centre, than racing over after work on Friday.

I might be able to make it - my car is in for an MOT so it would depend on how that goes. Anyone decided on a venue yet?

I just got here and I think the city center may be the best place. Any ideas?

I'm coming from out-of-town and navigating the railway will be trial enough, so I'd like to vote for city centre too, please! I just don't think I have the streetsmarts to cope with catching a bus as well.

Put me down for the first one of 2011*, I move to Birmingham at the start of January...

*Not it if includes both real ale and sushi. That's an either/or choice right there.

OK so Saturday? Afternoon? City Center? Will someone please suggest a place?

The Welly again?

I'd suggest the Prince of Wales, but it's right next door to this week's conference, so it'll probably be overrun with Tories.

There's a couple of nice ones out towards Newhall Street, but they're not as convenient for the station.

I think I speak for all stationers (?) when I say a venue doesn't need to be right next door to the actual train, it would just be really great if it wasn't a cab ride away!

Walking distance ftw.

OK, Penny Blacks at the Mailbox, 4:30 pm, Saturday. Does this work for everyone?
