Billy Goat Meetup, August Flavor
posted July 26, 2010 10:11 AM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Wed August 4 at 6:00 PM, Billy Goat Tavern
430 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
Tiny beers, steak and eggs, Horny Goats, and inappropriate conversation.
I really wanted Chicago to be the most popular city for meets on IRL if only for the briefest of moments, so I went ahead and made the thread. I am pretty sure I'm going to mess it up terribly and get teased forever, though. Adam is still making fun of me over "Tuscan Raiders."

Might want to create a thread over on MetaTalk too. That seems to be the continuing standard.

We still need one more post to tie with NYC. They have two meets each under "New York" and "Brooklyn."

I'm thinking of an ancillary meetup sometime in the coming weeks in my new 'hood. We found a delightfully divey dive bar called Casey's Corner this weekend. It was one of those bars where you walk in and you hear the record-scratch sound because it's immediately obvious you are Not From Around Here.

Yet, we sat down, enjoyed some $3 PBR (not an ironic keebler choice in this bar, no sir) and before long the patrons were inviting us to play pool with them. They were also having a cookout to celebrate the 64th birthday of one of the regulars, Zeke, and offered us some burgers and dogs. Super cool peeps. My only complaint was the digital jukebox was kind of a ripoff, costing $1/song for most of the good songs (since I can't play pool, I entertained myself trying to select a venue-appropriate playlist for the evening).

Not sure how they would take to an army of internet kids invading their turf, but I have a feeling we would all get along swimmingly given enough booze and a few games of pool.

There's also Cary's Lounge a bit further east but haven't had a chance to check it out yet.

The fried chicken dinner at The Southern will help us catch up. We do need to hammer out a date but I feel weird posting two threads (metatalk+IRL) for a meetup that can only have 10 attendees. So we'll try to come to some sort of consensus at Billy Goat so we can decide on a date and post it straight to IRL.

Unless Adam wants to post the Metatalk thread (cough, elbows).

posted by evisceratordeath at 7:46 AM on August 4, 2010

Okay, I'll share my leaky apartment story in solidarity. I've known for a while that water is getting in through the bedroom window, and people have looked at it, but haven't quite figured out why. Then yesterday I go to change the lightbulb in my bathroom, which is contained in one of those fishbowl fixtures. And as I'm unscrewing the abominable little screws, I'm thinking "Wow, this thing seems kinda heavy." So I get it completely free from the fixture, and I realize the whole thing is filled with murky red water. So apparently water is coming in through the fixture as well. And yeah, there was totally a working lightbulb in there until recently. It looked pretty wicked.

Be heroic! I'm trying to convince a friend of mine from out of town (that also has comped VIP tix to Lolla) to come. If he makes it and you don't, well, let's just say that you would look especially lame.

Moar liek dorkletone, amirite?

This one sees shockingly little use! Related fact: Some friends of mine prefer "Drunkletone" over "Sparklecrunk" and I have no idea why given the latter's obvious superiority.

30 min. of Lady Gaga --> 2ManyDJs --> Late arrival at the Bong is not a bad night. Though were I in your place, it would be pretty awkward as friends of mine are playing the dance stage at noon on Saturday and the early wake up would be pretty brutal even if I didn't get smashed on Friday.

I was under the impression that the wagon moved around and did not have a fixed location (i.e. two blocks from the Bong). Their website says tonight they're in Logan Square.
posted by adamdschneider at 11:31 AM on August 6, 2010

Why do I always find out about delicious food RIGHT AFTER I make dinner plans? Kaz, how well do the naan-wiches keep? Would they last long enough to be second dinner if I bought them early-ish?

Yes, I eat like a hobbit. And it's totally fine.
posted by betty botter at 11:36 AM on August 6, 2010

Adam, the wagon moves around but they *also* have a fixed location on Clark St. just north of Ridge.

The naan-wich would probably keep ok, but it would get messy. As it was, eating it 30 minutes after buying it, I found the naan was too delicate and kind of fell apart while I was trying to eat it. I think the key is to keep it wrapped and just tear away the foil a little at a time.
posted by misskaz at 12:03 PM on August 6, 2010

If anyone has not yet eaten a naan-wich I am trying to round up some people to go eat at Sun-Wa Chinese BBQ on Broadway tonight. Come on, if you're already on the Northside for a little bong action, you might as well make a little trampoline out of crispy duck skin for that booze to land on first.

Fun fact: I am never going to ask people if they want to smoke ever again. Rather, I shall offer "a little bong action."
