BeNeLux meetup?

Sat August 18 at 5:00 PM, In de Wildeman
Kolksteeg 3, 1012 Binnenstad, The Netherlands (Map & Directions)
I am an American PhD student now studying in Leuven for the next four years and I'm wondering if there is anyone interested in a Metafilter meetup. I'm not really sure what I have in mind but we could always go out for drinks or something if we can't think of anything.

Nice one! I'm an Australian living in Ghent, though never really thought about the chance of fellow mefites in oude Belgie!
posted by channey at 12:02 AM on July 10, 2012

I figured that finding a pile of mefites in Leuven might be a bit of a stretch, so I'm thinking Brussels would be a good compromise to gather Belgian mefites if nothing else.
posted by Blasdelb at 12:10 AM on July 10, 2012

I seem to recall that there are definitely some mefites in Belgium. But the chance that they check IRL is slim since there are hardly ever IRL meetups. (Which is a self reinforcing situation obviously)

I wouldn't mind going to a meetup in Brussels even if I'm in Amsterdam; haven't been there for ages and I can always visit the comics museum too.

I've been keeping an eye on this, but sadly I can't get away in the near future... But Blasdelb, if you come to Amsterdam....!
posted by likeso at 5:53 PM on July 24, 2012

I guess its looking like if we're going to have a Benelux meetup, Amsterdam would be a better consensus place. I'm going to be returning to the US for two weeks to handle visa stuff August 23rd so it would be best before then, and a weekend would also work a lot better for me.
posted by Blasdelb at 1:51 AM on July 25, 2012

Amsterdam is not that far for me. I'd come too.
posted by joost de vries at 10:53 AM on July 25, 2012

Maybe we should drop a memail to pendragon, rubbish bin night, neushoorn, digitalprimate, zia... others? I'm sure many don't have alerts on. Don't know when the last Benelux meetup was, but let's round 'em all up for this one!

...of course now everyone will find out just how bad my Dutch has become ;)

Okay, I sent memail with a link to this post to pendragon, rubbish bin night, neushoorn, digitalprimate, zia and goodnewsfortheinsane. Anybody know of anybody else? Not just Benelux, but in Germany, maybe?
(Oh! Blasdelb, I hope you don't mind - I don't mean to busybody this!)
posted by likeso at 4:12 AM on July 27, 2012

Of course I don't, busybody away! I'd love to meet as many European mefites as I can.

We also need suggestions for a venue.
posted by Blasdelb at 4:54 AM on July 27, 2012

I suggest a place with a roof. Beer would be nice too.

But no squirrels. Can't abide those animals.
posted by digitalprimate at 6:27 AM on July 27, 2012 [1 favorite]

Whew! Busybody subroutine re-engaged. ;)

A No-Squirrels-Allowed-But-There-Are-Swans venue: the IJ-Kantine.
It's downtown, not far from Central Station, in the harbor area. My nephew, who is way cooler and in-the-know than I am, tells me it's "gezelling", happening and has great food and beverages... But there are all kinds of other options/cuisines/neighborhoods - MartinWisse? Suggestions?
posted by likeso at 11:53 AM on July 27, 2012

The IJ-Kantine sounds nice. But adds some 18 mins to the travel time.
Another option is beer pub In de Wildeman.

Know it and love it!
We should get there ahead of the Saturday crowd, though. Five? Six?
posted by likeso at 12:07 PM on July 27, 2012

Yeah my wife works at Hema HQ on that side of the Ij, and it is more than just 18 minutes; the ferry only goes once half an hour on weekdays. No idea what it's like on weekends.

In de Wildeman looks good. Will the tolerate People from the Internet?

posted by digitalprimate at 8:00 AM on July 31, 2012

I'll be there.

What about the time though? 20:00 is fine. 17:00 as likeso proposed would possibly be quieter.
Do we want to get there before the saturday crowd?

I'll be there. If In de Wildeman is too busy (which it can be) the Beer Temple and/or Het Arendsnest are relatively close and just as good for those who like beer.

In de Wildeman tolerates MeFites so well that at least one has set part of his novel in it.

Thanks for the invite likeso. Unfortunately we won't be in town until 6 Sep. I'd be up for another meet during Sep, Oct, Nov.

Cheers, have fun,

Awesome, that's the first day of my holidays, and I'm still in NL then. I haven't been to IDW in a while, having become something of a regular at Arendsnest. I'm 90% sure I'll be there!

For some reason this meetup sounds like "American expats and tourists currently in north-west Europe need a reason to hang out together". I'll pass.
posted by knz at 1:40 AM on August 6, 2012

To be fair, my +1 will be the only tourist if he comes and as far as I can tell I'm the only expat; even together we'd only make a fourth of those planning to come.
posted by Blasdelb at 2:26 AM on August 6, 2012

as far as I can tell I'm the only expat
Oh, er, I'm an expat, too. I've sent a note to at least one Dutchman who might come, though.
posted by knile at 3:15 AM on August 6, 2012 [1 favorite]

I'll definitely be at the meet, but it would be useful to get an idea of head-count and maybe plan accordingly. The Wildeman can be a bit busy late Saturday afternoon.

Perhaps a better bet is to go the Bierfabriek instead. The beer isn't anything like as good (duh), but there's a lot more space.
posted by daveje at 3:43 AM on August 6, 2012

Martin, I guess you're talking about Charlie? He's a fairly equal-opportunity drinker when he's here, and he'll happily spend time in the Beer Temple and Arendsnest as well. He's usually here for the Bockbierfestival.
posted by daveje at 3:51 AM on August 6, 2012

daveje: agreed, In De Wildeman does indeed get pretty crowded over the weekend. Bierfabriek, on the other hand, has boring beer but there's plenty of space and the food is pretty nice.

BUT if somebody can grab the large table at the back of In De Wildeman's main bar, we can probably claim territory to seat around ten.
posted by Elizabeth the Thirteenth at 4:25 AM on August 6, 2012

I'm the dutchman knile mentioned, but I'm not from anywhere near Amsterdam, so I'd be just as much a tourist as your average American. Although possibly slightly taller.

Would love to come but not sure if I can make it yet. I'll have to ask the girlfriend.
posted by Sourisnoire at 6:38 AM on August 6, 2012

Bring the girlfriend!
We can plusone and plustwo right here on the page.

Plusthrees require the appropriate form submitted in triplicate three days in advance to the caba appropriate committee. I'm not sure what committee that is, I'm a meetup n00b.
posted by likeso at 8:36 AM on August 6, 2012

See, the problem is she'll be a little over 4 months pregnant by then so she might not quite be in the mood for socialising with some random strangers I met on the internet.

I'm up for it though, so I'll try to make an effort and possibly even show up.

@Knile: how are you getting there? Train?

Come to think of it, does a pregnancy count as a plusthree or is there a completely different form for that? Which commity comitee cabal do I contact?
posted by Sourisnoire at 10:38 AM on August 6, 2012

Congradulations!

I'm not sure but I think the form for unborn children simply also requires copies of their passports, banking information and degrees, as well as proof that they do not carry TB, have financial backing, and acceptance into a registered university - each in triplicate.
posted by Blasdelb at 11:50 AM on August 6, 2012

Ah, the usual then.
posted by Sourisnoire at 12:12 PM on August 6, 2012

Thanks to likeso for the heads up. As other people mentioned, In the Wildeman is a pretty small venue and it can get crowded on Saturdays. I'm not familiar with Bierfabriek but I'm OK with going there instead, if that's what people prefer.
posted by rjs at 12:46 PM on August 6, 2012

One need not +1 for organisms too young to have BSNs. I'll be coming in via train, a bit earlier in the day if anybody wants to visit FOAM or EYE.

Is there a consensus yet on where this is happening? I love IdW, but understand that sizewise, it might not work. I'd happily go to Bierfabriek, as I've never been.
posted by knile at 3:31 AM on August 12, 2012

Well, I will be there, for whatever value of, "there" becomes defined.

And KNV, some of us exist in an interstitial place between being Dutch and being not-Dutch. I was raised in the States, lived here for the 1990s, move to NYC for the 2000s. I have dual citizenship and a Dutch wife of lo these 23 years. So Dutch or not Dutch, I still know the ways of your people.

...and I'll bet you EUR 100 I make boerenkoolstamppot better than your own mother ;)
posted by digitalprimate at 12:23 PM on August 12, 2012

Looks like there's 10 of us, so I vote for the IdW, since the big table at the back will just about manage that. Any chance of someone arriving a little earlier to try to claim it?
posted by daveje at 7:23 AM on August 14, 2012

I'm happy to do that. I'll be the guy in a red polo drinking a beer, but of course Secret Handshake Shibboleth Phrases are encouraged to check that you've find the right guy in a red polo drinking a beer.
posted by knile at 7:33 AM on August 14, 2012

I think I'll also be there a bit early then, maybe some time before 4:00pm or so, wearing a dark metafilter T-shirt and arriving with a non-mefite. Don't worry, I've got a collection of Shiboleths that have each worked before.
posted by Blasdelb at 7:50 AM on August 14, 2012

Let's compromise: I'll wear the leopard, but wear my grandmother's mink stole.

Which is of course in a shipping container in R'dam until my renovations are finished. They will never be finished, will they?

Sourisnoire, you're a maybe now? Let's try again this fall for an 024 meetup.
posted by knile at 2:31 AM on August 15, 2012

It's almost certain I'll be there, without a +1. I'll be a bit late though because first I'll be doing this.

A 024 meetup sounds good too. You're still around this autumn then? Great. Let's see if we can get more than 3 people to show up this time.

And as far as shibboleth phrases go, "Scheveningen" is sort of traditional around these parts.

Not sure "Scheveningen" is the best choice, given the population showing up zonder Nederlands voor moedertaal. I was thinking more of the Friend-of-Matt type.
posted by knile at 2:58 AM on August 16, 2012

Yay, sourisnoire - and belated though heartfelt congratulations to you and girlfriend! Next time, plusthree indeed. :)
So, I take it that you are to be the designated lifeguard should one or more of us fall into a canal?

(still sulking over the surrender of the mink to digitalprimate)
posted by likeso at 3:21 AM on August 16, 2012

I'll be there probably 1730ish now, and I'll be wearing one of these.

And, IMHO, with Dutch it's not the trixy consonants in words like Scheveningen that show you up as a non-native speaker. It's the diphthongs we don't have in a lot of English dialects. I have to constantly think to pronounce Huis like it's supposed to be pronounced, not just say "House" like an American (I suspect the Brits have an easier time with this one). And keuken? I'll never pronounce that properly even though I'm always in it.

But I will happily let you laugh at me as I ask "Bent U ook een vriend van Matt? Hij komt uit Scheveningen...."
posted by digitalprimate at 7:36 AM on August 16, 2012 [1 favorite]

The different kinds of ou sounds do my head in, and you have to be really careful. There's a town called Voorhout near Leiden, and if you get the pronunciation wrong, it's the Dutch word for foreskin.

I'll also be wearing an NZ fish-hook, but I keep mine hidden. It's the right thing to do, apparently...
