Let's walk Broadway again
posted March 28, 2012 2:44 PM   RSS

Last fall we walked the length of Broadway. It was an intrepid little band of Mefites. Let's do it again! On a date to be determined, we will meet on the north east side of the Broadway Bridge (225th and Broadway) and walk to the Battery.
We will stop for lunch, bathroom breaks, and snacks and hope to get to the Battery by sunset.

This is an approximately 13.7 mile walk, so wear comfy shoes for walking, bring sunscreen and a bottle of water. People are welcome to bring friends, start and stop at any point on the walk - we can exchange phone numbers to arrange this. We will be near a subway line at all times. Last time we ended the walk at a bar where there was pizza! and beer!

Getting to the starting point:
There are three modes of transportation that will put you at 225th and Broadway.
Subway: the 1 line stops exactly here. Except that they're doing construction on the Uptown 225th platform. I recommend getting off at 215th and walking up - there's a wrinkle in the street numbering up here so that's actually really five blocks, not ten.
Metro North: the Hudson River Line Marble Hill Stop is less than a block away.
Buses include the BX7, BX20, BX9, M100, and BXM1.

Last year, we arrived at Battery Park in time for sunset. It was glorious.

Yay! I was hoping we'd do this again.

Sounds great. I hope it will be at a time I can attend. Any chance you could do it next weekend or is that too soon?

Yes. Not April 7 please.

I'm out of town the following two weekends (7th/15th).

Definitely - was bummed to miss out last time. Please not Easter weekend (April 7/8)

That sounds like fun.

I'm also scheduled already for the April 7th/15th weekends.

So that gives us the 21st or 28th as available. Or something in May.

My vote would be for the 21st (because the next Meet the Lady is on Friday 4/27, and I know I will not be able to make myself get up early the morning after an MTL night).

Ok. Setting it for Saturday the 21st. Rain date will be Sunday the 22nd.
Hopefully this time the MTA won't shut the 1 train.

My goal is to have as much coco helado as humanly possible during the walk. And maybe some water ice at Rita's. Especially if they have the wild black cherry flavor.

This time I'd like to do the first leg.

I'd like to do the last leg. My husband plays till late-thirty Friday nights, so we won't be getting to the city by 10am. What time would you be hitting the Penn Station area?
posted by kellyblah at 7:31 AM on April 4, 2012

It is slightly difficult to predict when we will be in specific locations. Last time we made it to

137th and Broadway at around 12:00
90th and Broadway at around 1pm
59th St Columbus Circle at around 3pm
Times Square at around 3:15pm
Arrived Battery Park at about 5:30pm

We stopped for lunch, ice cream once or twice (or maybe three times?), a bathroom break, Union Square and to visit jonmc at the Strand.

Meeting up in the Penn Station area may be difficult - swarms of people. If you're willing to take the subway uptown a bit, Columbus Circle might be a better bet.

Others may have better suggestions ...

Sure, Columbus Circle would work, too. With a ballpark time, we'll get there a bit early and amusing ourselves till the gaggle gets there.

I'd love to meet up with you all around 168th & Broadway and walk for as long as I can (probably not long). I'll keep tabs on you.

How fast do you walk? I'm sure the dog would love to come, but she's kind of slow. But then again, so am I. Although I don't stop to sniff every tree, pole and trash pile.

I was so sad to have missed this last time that I arranged my own walk with a couple of friends a few weeks later. But count me in this time! I've been wanting to do it again and I have yet to meet any Mefites in person (save for the ones I met before running into them on the site).

TPS, we routinely stop (at agreed upon spots) to let slower walkers catch up. So, essentially, everyone goes at their own pace. It's actually really awesome.

We walk like New Yorkers, but not caffeinated New Yorkers. As Eideteker said, when we get further downtown, we have assembly points. It gets crowded around 59th St, chaotic near Times Square, and crazy in Chinatown. The assembly points make it so we don't have to worry about staying together in the scrum.

My general plan for stopping points (different from assembly points) include getting coffee at a bakery around 181st, lunch at the place that used to be Paul's Pizza but is now apparently Olga's Pizza (3409 Broadway) at 138th (good cheap no frills pizza, no real seating, we can do park benches outside), and a bathroom break at Barnes and Noble at 82nd and Broadway. Everything else is freeform.

I'm trying to decide if I want to bring my AIA guide to NYC, or if it is too darn heavy.

Alright, I'll try to come out, and walk as fast and as far as the dog and my growing belly allow.

Crappity, looks like I am out for this date -husband has another gig on Saturday =[

I should be able to make this work. Look forward to it and meeting some of you.

I'm starting to really get excited about this. I'll be bringing some friends and hopefully some family (yay cousins!) as well this year. Can't wait to see some of you again and meet others of you for the first time.

My usual +1 will not be able to come because he has cartilage tears that are exacerbated by walking.

I really hope we have good weather this coming weekend.

Crap, I double booked my Saturday. Hoping for rain...

I'll be in DC suddenly so hoping it's next week for my sake too. I'll do some astral walking if not.
posted by Potomac Avenue at 10:38 AM on April 16, 2012

Yeah I was really excited to do this but unfortunately I'll be traveling this weekend. So I would certainly be interested in a rescheduled or repeat version of this event.
posted by grobstein at 11:44 AM on April 16, 2012

In terms of reschedules or repeats:
primary reschedule would be for Sunday the 22nd, and a secondary reschedule would mean finding out what works for people in the following weeks.

I'd like to do this twice a year in Spring and in Fall - this makes the most sense in terms of weather. We tried doing this in the summer but it was incredibly hot.

Right now the weather forecast is suggestive of rain on both Saturday and Sunday, but that's still a bit far in the future to make decisions.

Bah. Changing to a "maybe." I was overly ambitious. I just moved to a new apartment, and this is the first weekend I have to unpack boxes, etc. I'll see how this week goes first.

wunderground is currently showing me rain (60% chance) on Saturday, Sunday as "overcast" with a high of 59 (compared with Saturday's 75). Sounds like good walking weather, not too hot nor too sunburn-y for the pastier folks.
posted by Eideteker at 6:31 AM on April 19, 2012

wunderground has been being a fickle beast lately. As a gardener, I want/need rain desperately and it keeps forecasting rain and then taking it away like Lucy took Charlie Brown's football. A high of 55oF on Sunday, as suggested by the lovely folks at wunderground, is a bit on the cold side.

I guess this will have to go down to the line. But based on today's data, we will likely be walking on Sunday.
posted by sciencegeek at 1:17 PM on April 19, 2012

Ok, I'm going to cancel this for both Saturday and Sunday - the forecast looks rainy and unpleasant for both days (unless you're a plant, in that case you're REALLY excited about it).

When would people like to reschedule this for?

This is happening next weekend...

(unless you're a plant, in that case you're REALLY excited about it).

Lovely weather, if you're a duck.

In addition to the meetup Eideteker mentioned, next weekend is chock a block with charity walks likely in our path/conflicting. Sunday of the following week is 5 Borough Bike, but maybe Sat?
posted by TravellingCari at 12:29 PM on April 20, 2012

Of course now the sun is shining innocently up there. Hmph. (the forecast does indicate thunderstorms around sunset).

Future Saturday dates:
  • April 28th - chock-a-block with other walks and stuff (also the first day of the Giro d'Italia if anyone is into that sort of thing).
  • May 5th - which is also the date of the Great Saunter, a 32 mile walk of the shoreline of Manhattan. Also, it is Cinco de Mayo.
  • May 12th - the day before Mother's Day.
  • May 19th
  • May 26th
Please let me know what works for you. Or if there are major holidays/events in there that should be avoided.
posted by sciencegeek at 9:03 AM on April 21, 2012

I can't do May 5th, but any other Saturday would probably be fine.

May 12 prob bad for me. Others good.

I am perversely pleased you guys had to cancel! (Sorry it didn't work out.)

I'm still sort of shaking my fist in the general direction of the weather forecasters. Yesterday was actually pretty darn perfect for walking.

Mother Nature and her identiy crisis. Boo.

Look forward to joining when it gets scheduled. One caveat - if we land on 5/5, the rain out is the same as Five Borough Bike Tour and I'm not sure if their route would impact Broadway at all.

I can't do the 5th or the 26th (the former is free comic book day/Avengers, the latter is apparently Eurovision?).

Oh, and I'm out of town on the 19th.

But that's just me.

My work has changed and now I am available on the 19th.

Should we just do it this Sunday though? It is kind of last minute, but it could be extremely awesome.

So, I realize that this thread is a few weeks old, but I'm going to be living in Harlem for 3 months starting in late May, so if this is still happening ever, I'd love to come to it.

How about June 2nd for walking? Any objections?

I think I want to get this on the calendar. Before it gets too hot or something.

Also, Eideteker, Eurovision is never a reason to miss something. Speaking of which, could there be a Eurovision watching meetup? Because that would be truly awesome. I think I could get access to a projector if someone has a space we could view it in.

(links to official site, how to watch Eurovision online, and a preview about the host country wanting to light your fire).
