Getting To Know Boston
posted August 30, 2010 9:18 AM   RSS

My partner just moved to Boston for school, and this weekend is my first of many visits. I've never made it to a meetup there before -- I'd love to have a drink or a snack with Boston-centric mefites on Saturday the 4th!
I'm staying in Cambridge so somewhere close to there would be ideal, but I can get pretty much anywhere within reason. Suggestions?

I'm out of town on the 4th, but would love to some other time.

Cripes, looking at holiday weekend bus tickets selling out, I might be out of town on the 4th. Maybe planning a little further off, like for the weekend of the 17th, would be a good safety measure?

I could not go this weekend, but would be interested in meeting up on a later one.

I suggest Redbones in Davis Square. It's 10 minutes up the Red Line from Cambridge, and they have decent BBQ and a great beer list.

The 4th is my birthday! You picked an excellent day!

An excellent day when I'm in Vermont. Oh well. A later weekend would be do-able for me.

I'll be in Maine this weekend, hoping my tent keeps me dry during a potential hurricane, but I'd be up for a meetup another weekend.

Ok let's definitely start aiming for the 17th then :)

Good BBQ might even flush my Mr. himself out of hiding for a change...

17th being a Friday would be out of the running for me, but I could do the 18th.

I think I meant Saturday anyway!

Sorry, I didn't mean for this post to be so disorganized. I'm sure things will crystallize over the next week or so.

Another vote for meeting up sometime after this weekend. Almost anything T-accessible would probably work, and I've yet to try Redbones so that might be fun.

[Mercury Retrograde joke HERE.]

I'm down for the 'Bones on 17 September.

We're going hurricane camping, too! Future weekends would be better.

Redbones gets crazy packed on the weekends, so if this is where everyone wants to go it should be a) early or b) worked out with the staff ahead of time. I don't know if they take reservations.

Oh boy! We both have S.O.'s Boston, while we're in NYC. Maybe we should carpool? =D

(Bolt or Mega? I go Bolt, because of the rewards dealie. Just took my first free trip last weekend!)

Redbones on a Saturday? you people are nuts.

Weekday nights is where it's at w/ Redbones.

I think i'm going hurricane climbing in NY so I might be gone Saturday, but am definitely up for future weeks.

Yeah. I live right near Davis Sq. and walk by Redbones with some frequency and it's crazy busy even on Thursdays...there are always crowds out the door the entire weekend through.

And the students just got back. You guys may not know this, but there are a few schools around the Somerville/Cambridge area (*cough*).

Considering a big (any) group there for any time around the weekend is insanity, IMNSHO. Just sayin'.

Well, the Cambridge Brewing Company was pretty accommodating last time we were there - we could go there again. They even have outdoor seating if the weather stays nice.

Okay folks, my travel plans have crystallized and it looks like I will definitely be in town THIS weekend, over the holiday. Which means I can basically not see any of you! And the 17th/18th I will definitely be in New York.

:(

You can all still get together without me of course. Next time (and it will be soon!) I will be a little more judicious about my weekend choosing.

Yeah, Jumbos represent!

Well I thought we were talking about Tufts...

Anyway, depending on the date I might be interested in the future? I just moved here and I know pretty much nobody.

naoko, just for the record, I was totally thinking of Tufts. I wouldn't neglect you Tufts folks!

Anyway, depending on the date I might be interested in the future? I just moved here and I know pretty much nobody.

Yeah, I'm still game too.

I'm still game for a future meetup at a future time in a future location. In the future.

Marty! Marty! It's your kids, Marty!

Wait, sorry, I'll come in again.

I don't know about my future, but I may be back in Boston soon! Just commenting in a thread for Recent Activity purposes. Carry on.

(I'd love to meet you hermitosis; I'm hoping it all comes together!)

Davis Square is also home to a brand new bar called The Foundry and a flatbread pizza/candlepin bowling place. Just in case Redbones is crowded.

(Hi, I'm newish and like to meet people. *waves*)
posted by maryr at 12:42 PM on September 9, 2010

I've been meaning to go to the bowling place for a while but haven't made it. I'm only around and free one weekend night for the rest of September... how do folks feel about Friday the 17?
posted by nat at 10:21 PM on September 9, 2010

I think I can get behind that. We tried to go there a couple months ago on a Friday or Saturday evening and it was mobbed (couldn't get food OR a lane without a long wait), but hopefully the buzz has died down somewhat since then. Maybe we can call ahead?
posted by backseatpilot at 5:05 AM on September 10, 2010

I can't do Fridays :( But if that's what people decide, I'm cool with sitting this one out.
posted by sonika at 5:22 AM on September 10, 2010

I'm not really a fan of bowling, but I'd go anyway! I'm better with Saturdays unless it's after 8 or so on Friday.

Keeping an eye on this thread, though I think my calendar may be too booked up in the near future to attend.

I think that there are so many mefites in Boston and environs that it might not be out of line to start a regular meetup. Second Tuesday of the month, that kinda thing. Just sayin'.
posted by Sublimity at 12:24 PM on September 10, 2010

I'll second the idea of a monthly meetup. And I would love to check out the Foundry soon.

I'm in for a meetup in the near future. Cambridge Common between Harvard and Porter has beer and tater tots. If I need to elaborate this may be the wrong crowd.
posted by KevCed at 2:37 PM on September 11, 2010

I can make it to a meetup this weekend (17th or 18th) assuming someone else handles the problem of choosing a place, maybe getting reservations, and declaring it a done deal here. (Not me, I have the organizational skills of a gnat.) I like these Davis Square ideas, or at least some place on the red line.

The 17th works better for me. I'll be in RI for a wedding on the 18th.
posted by KevCed at 1:52 PM on September 13, 2010

May be able to make it either day. Dr. E may be taking the Baby Zizz off for the weekend. If that happens, I can come. If not, it'll be touch and go. But I'd like to make it if possible.

Is this going to happen tomorrow? Girlfriend has plans and it'll be just me and the cats home alone otherwise, and the cats don't like beer.

Although I don't think I can make it to this year's, I can't think of a better venue for a meetup than the Somerville Fluff Festival this weekend.
posted by nonane at 8:24 PM on September 22, 2010

Fluff scares me. But if people are going to be around there and want to meet up, I could make it there pretty easily.
posted by Metroid Baby at 4:44 AM on September 24, 2010

I will be at Legofest tomorrow. As my son as a peanut allergy, I don't think taking him to a Fluff festival will be a good idea. That'd be like going to see a Phish concert when you don't like the smell of veggie burritos and weed.
posted by bondcliff at 11:50 AM on September 24, 2010 [1 favorite]

I plan on being at the Fluff festival at one point or another with my son--not sure what time I'll drop in. I made an FPP about Fluff, too; thanks nonane!

Do these proposed meetup threads ever die? Should we put this one out of its misery and finally plan an event?
posted by backseatpilot at 6:34 AM on October 22, 2010

We should plan an event. I like Saturdays (not this one, as I am sick in bed, but in general).

I'll ask my beau about the 13th tomorrow and see how that date fits with Other Plans.
