Karaoke in Astoria!

Fri February 25 at 8:00 PM, Karaoke Shout
32-46 Steinway St, Queens, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
It's time for some karaoke in Astoria at Karaoke Shout!
I was thinking we could hang at the bar ($2 a song) vs. getting a private room to save $$$, but maybe a room would work, too. What are your thoughts, folks?

EDIT: After conversation in the proposed, I think we will try a reserved room. I'll reserve beforehand based on turnout. You know you want to come! It's just steps from the RM stop at Steinway Street, and not a bad walk from the NQ stop at Broadway, either.

2ND EDIT: I haven't reserved a room; we're going to show up and play it by ear. Eeee, can't wait!

Karaoke like anywhere else would probably be better for me? . . . but I might do this. After the 19th preferred. And I guess weekend.

This meetup will definitely be in Astoria.

I'd like to go to this. But wait a minute, are you saying the private room would cost more or less?

Any time! I am so in.

...really? People request Nessun Dorma enough that it's third?

Oh good, they have The Little Mermaid soundtrack. I'm good to go for this. 3rd week of Feb is best for me. But I'm down for whenever. I'm willing to throw in a few extra bucks for a private room, but I understand if people would rather go for the bar.

I think a private room could cost more if people were happy to listen more than sing, but maybe a private room is the way to go! Either would probably be fun!
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 9:03 PM on February 4, 2011

I'm fine with either. A private room is $6 per person per hour on Fridays and Saturdays ($5 on other days), so that's like paying $2 per song if each person sings 3 songs per hour.

The question is how much did we spend at Second on Second for that large room and how much do you think we're likely to spend now at this new place? That has a large effect on whether or not I'll be able to make it.

This sounds awesome...

At Second on Second, the hourly flat cost for the room was credited with the drinks people bought at the bar. I can't tell if this place does that; I don't think so.

I have called a date and a time!

can't oh well

I have changed the date from the 18th to the 25th, because I do not wish to conflict with Meet the Lady.

Darnit, I got really excited and told The MP, who reminded me that we already have plans that evening. Shoot.

Aw thanks for dodging Meet The Lady, TPS! Now I can come too.

I'll be there, but I doubt I can get there by 8. Probably more like 9.

Yippee! There's a fairly good chance I'll be around for this. Excited!

I would like to try to make it to this, but someone may have to teach me how to use the subway.

I have mastered NJ Transit to Penn Station, FWIW.
posted by amro at 11:23 AM on February 8, 2011

The subway is easy! You take the R train from Times Square and the karaoke place is just steps away.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 12:22 PM on February 10, 2011

Yeah. If you can deal with NJT, you'll have no issue with the Subways.

The subway is easy!

Just click your heels together three times and say. . . .

(Except on weekends; it can get hairy.)

Oh! This means time to come up with a fabulous karaoke outfit!!!!

Maybe. I am off this week, and Jon gets home around 7:30pm. I've actually never been to karaoke. I vote bar -- sounds cheaper (I probably won't sing much, but I'd love to listen), plus performers get a bigger audience!

I would like to go, but I'm afraid of strangers. Thinking about it...thinking about it...buffering...

We're not strangers! You know us, from the Internet.

Sorry, friends, had to jump into the "maybe" pile. Trying to get rush tickets for closing night of "La Boheme" at the Met.

I don't think I will be able to make it after all. But thank you to Eid who kindly offered to show me the ropes of the subway; I will take you up on that one of these days when I finally make it to an outer borough meet up.

I wanted so badly to be there with you all and belt out the Best of Amy Grant, but, as it turns out, I'll be at a meetup in Pittsburgh that night. Black and yellow, black and yellow...
posted by HotPatatta at 3:03 PM on February 24, 2011

I think we can play it by ear on the private room- let's show up and hang around the lounge for awhile and see if we need one! Looking forward to seeing you all. I will sing Amy Grant for HotPatatta.

I thought I'd make it, but I'm experiencing flu-like symptoms so I won't take chances with my health (and yours). Someone sing "Heartache Tonight" on my behalf!

I WILL BE THERE. Nightmare week at work, and everything's taking 30 min. longer that it should, BUT DAMMIT I WILL MAKE IT FOR KARAOKE.
