Triangle 15th Anniversary Meetup

Tue July 15 at 7:00 PM, The Remedy Diner
137 East Hargett Street, Raleigh, NC, USA (Map & Directions)
Hey, it's been too long, and we should celebrate the big 1-5 in style. I'm thinking dinner somewhere and then casual drinks nearby for people who want to join up after dinner. I'm suggesting Raleigh because that's closest to me, but we could certainly do it elsewhere in the Triangle if that works better for people.
I'm confirming the details we talked about in the thread. Hope to see everyone there!
Even though Monday might be ideally symbolic, a lot of restaurants are closed then.
I assume we're talking about July 14...

Raleigh is pretty close to where I work now, so I'm cool with having a weekday Monday IRL dinner event. Any locations you had in mind?

Yes, I was thinking Monday the 14th, but it could certainly be moved if we settle on a venue that is closed. Any suggestions? There was some talk of an Indian place in Cary at the last meetup I was at, if I remember correctly...

There has also been interest in The Remedy. Lately I've been looking to try Centro, but I know nothing really about it.
For drinks, I've been wanting to try Foundation forever.

Hooray, meetup! Monday would be fine for me, too. Though I'd prefer if it started after 6:30, just for timing issues.

I like the Remedy, but is it still tiny? They had some outside seating in the back, but is it still itty bitty indoors? It's been some time since I've been there.

Yeah, it's small and they don't take reservations. However, I'm pretty frequently there around 6:30 during the week and it's usually pretty empty. If we get there and it's crowded, we could always go to one of the other dozens of places within walking distance.
If we have more than 8ish people who commit to attending, though, we probably would want to choose another venue.

The Indian place in Cary under discussion is Chef[s] of India. I've only had the lunch buffet but It's left me with good enough impressions to try their dinner menu some time. I usually patronize them for the Peruvian chicken menu served on the same premises (Bill-La's).
Chefs of India will be of more interests to people avoiding meat, Bill-La's to people avoiding gluten. Either are good options for those without dietary restrictions. It's confusing but it works.
I don't work in Cary any more so if the meetup's in Raleigh or Cary, location will be all the same to me. Scheduling dinner 6:30 or later will be useful mostly for avoiding the worst of rush hour on I-40.

Well, let's say the official proposal is Remedy Diner, 7 pm Tuesday July 15th (They appear to be closed Mondays) just to put a target on the dartboard. I'm more than willing to change place, time, date, whatever if people have better ideas or scheduling conflicts. What say ye?

I was just at the Remedy tonight and asked if they could make a special exception to their reservation policy if we were expecting a biggish crowd and, not surprisingly, she said no. However, she said if we call a little before arrival they will try to hold a space for us; we'll just need to have everyone there to be seated. If y'all think that's a good idea I don't mind calling when I leave the house (~30 minutes before) to help us be assured of being seated together.
PS The nachos are sooo gooooood.

Just bumping this to the top of your Recent Activity. You may want to update your "Joining Us?" status if things have changed. I'm assuming not everyone on the Attending list will actually come (no offense, that's just how it goes for meetups), so we should be fine for getting a table, but if 10+ people do end up coming, we may have to hive off into multiple tables or try a secondary location.

I can tell you that I was very anxious about my first MeFi Meetup as well, but the Triangle crowd is really cool and laid back. It's totally fine to just kind of sit at the table and listen for a while if you don't want to be part of the conversation.
As for parking, there are a bunch of easy options in the area. If you let me know where you will be coming from I can help walk you through the route.
And we will miss you leesh! Feel better!

Please come, sockermom! Everyone is so nice! And I was excited to see your name on the RSVP list, I hadn't realized you lived here. When I go to the Remedy I always park in the large parking deck just behind the restaurant, entering on Blount Street across from Marbles. It's $1/hr, I think, but free on weeknights after 7pm.
I was thinking we could head down the street to Tir Na Nog if there isn't room for all of us at Remedy. It's nearby and a good-sized place.

There is also a good amount of (non-parallel) on-street parking at the south end of Moore Square and a surface lot just south of that behind City Market, if parking garages are part of the anxiety.

That was fun, and I am very interested in both the potluck as well as the biscuit tour.
I think the biscuit tour could work if we delegated biscuit gathering by geography, then convened at a central biscuit consumption location/base.

That's genius, and also sounds like the origin story for a biscuit-focused supervillain. "Yes, my little biscuitty minions, go forth and bring me the best biscuits from all the land! Once I have them gathered together here in my secret biscuit lair, I shall combine their buttery powers for eeveel! Bwah ha ha!"

We could have a biscuit-off / brunch at our place! I say brunch because I think we want to consume biscuits as fresh as possible, and most of the biscuit candidates are only open for breakfast / lunch (and Wimpy's Grill in Durham is closed on weekends!).
Biscuit candidates mentioned:
Rise (Durham)
Scratch (Durham)
Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen (Chapel Hill)
Neal's Deli (Carrboro)
State Farmer's Market Restaurant (Raleigh)
Big Ed's (Raleigh)
I feel Biscuitville should be included as a reference point.
Any I missed?

Time Out (Chapel Hill)
Pie Pushers has sausage biscuits and biscuits'n'gravy when they're at the Saturday Durham Farmer's Market. But that's contingent on the truck being there and our doing this on a Saturday morning.
I'm ambivalent about including Bo's. On the other hand they are a regional institution and co-reference point with Biscuitville. And we'll need enough biscuits to go around. So okay.
Beasley's might allow a takeout order if they can be persuaded of the need for science to be done.
If this happens in September or October in lieu of a potluck dinner, I suggest we call it the Triangle Biscuit Harvest Festival.

My fault. My excuse is that the past couple of weeks have been rather hectic workwise (pro tip: don't get the flu in the middle of summer!) to the extent I've been waking up to dreams of writing SQL queries or SAS programs.
