If anyone's going to be in Austin for SXSW, it may be fun to take an afternoon break for a Metafilter brunch/drink/communion one day, to get things going. I'll be staying downtown, but anywhere close is probably ok!
I live here now so whatever we decide, I should be able to make it unless that's when I have to fly out for work. Definitely count me in.

I can attend anything before the 11th, which is when I flee town for the remainder. Not in much of a position to help organize this year, but would love to hang out.

I'm in. I strongly recommend a venue a little bit off the beaten path. While this will be inconvenient for out-of-town SXSW-goers, I think that having a reasonably quiet venue that can accommodate a large party (which we won't find near downtown) will make up for it.
A couple places come to mind:
- Flying Saucer. Beer bar. We had a meetup here once, and they had plenty of room for us. I checked their calendar and they have nothing SXSWish on it.
- Epoch Coffee. I don't think they ever have music there, and they've got plenty of room indoors and out. Open 24x7.
I'm sure there are other good candidates, those are just what I can think of off the top of my head.

We had a good meetup one year in the party room at Hoovers on Manor Rd., too, just throwing that out there.

All the mods were at Hoover's & I think the cost of the room was sponsored by Matt? I checked in with The Cabal a couple weeks ago & it looks like R_N is the only official representative representing this year.
Epoch is a decent suggestion, & that bar we took over last year worked out, too. What was the name of that place?

The Dive Bar - it was perfectly nice, and walkable from the convention center. I don't remember whose friend it was that owned it and let us in early, though.

It was talked about in last-year's thread -- Matt Bucher, maybe? Whoever our generous benefactor was, I recall there were a last minute sick-out at the event.

Yeah, sorry I bailed last year. I was really sick. I could probably get us back in to the Dive bar, even at this late stage. I'll be out of town 15th-17th. Four Panels - what dates will you be in town?

Dive Bar is a bit of a hike from downtown, but it seems to be the consensus.
Epoch is almost in another county, although it's definitely popular.
Tiniest Bar in Texas is really casual and has lots of uncrowded patio space. Personally, I think this is the best bet.
I'd maybe also put a vote in for Halcyon if it's not too much trouble being in the middle of things.
Otherwise Dive Bar seems reasonable.

Halcyon might as well be at ground zero. Dive Bar at least has a chance of not being SXSW-overrun.

Dive Bar was great. They were super friendly and I walked there from the Convention Center without a problem.

Also if we're ready to look at dates, Fray Cafe is Sunday evening. I've met several MeFites at Fray, so maybe not overlap with that?

I'll be packing for The Runaway Scrape on Sunday evening, though I'd be good for earlier that afternoon. I'm going to just hand tight & see what the rest of y'all come up with, since I'd rather my trip not interfere with an otherwise good time, so don't sweat it. I'm gonna go look at a comet! If it happens after the 11th, I'll catch y'all on the flipside, & I'll bring pictures of the American Outback & its nighttime sky.
