Karaoke, Birthdays and Tiny Beers

Wed November 3 at 6:00 PM, The Billy Goat
430 N Michigan Ave, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
Three great things that go great together! The usual meetup, and then? THE BONG. Yeah. ****
(Previously, on IRL.....)

So. My birthday is Nov. 1. I almost never get to have any kind of a party because of Halloween. (Last year was an exception, but it was for charity.).

I would like to have a karaoke party, dammit.

So. I was thinking the Bong, or if we can get enough people, maybe a private room at Lincoln Karaoke. It can be before Halloween, at which point I will say YOU MUST HAVE A COSTUME (or something equally amusing), if after, whatever.

I just want a whole bunch of people to get shitty drunk with and sing awesome songs.

Thoughts?

Maybe all meetups should be in costume.

November 3rd is the regular Goat meetup - we could make the whole night into a party, and after the Goat go to the Bong en masse?

....or does that defeat the entire purpose of having a special birthday bash?

Windigo, that could totally work. I'll hopefully know in the next week what's going on with my work schedule, so there is that, too.

Will the Goat let you guys bring your own cake? It could have blue and yellow frosting. Or, if biblio would prefer, professional white frosting.

That's a damn good question that merits further investigation.

At the risk of making every meetup about my obsession with baked goods, I will make the world's most bitchin' metafilter/bibliogrrlbirthday cake if folks promise to contribute (a very small amount, just to cover ingredients, as I'm sadly still jobless, but jesus hopefully not still in November) to a cake fund.
posted by phunniemee at 2:21 PM on September 10, 2010

We could bring a 7-course meal and as long as we continue to buy the many many many tiny beers we do, they won't care. I mean, last time me and Juliet Banana sat there with our Xocos, proud as punch. They didn't blink.

I will contribute to any cake. Didn't see this before now. Of course, I'm in for whatever.

I will throw down some dollars on a cake. Also, I would be fully in support of a Bibliogrrl Birthday Bash in addition to the Bong meetup because she's special and deserves her own special awesome day.

The caveat with the additional birthday bash being that I would like a heads up as soon as possible because my social schedule has started filling up more than a week ahead of time lately and if I have to miss it I'll just picture Ms. Grrl sobbing into her arms all alone wearing a tiny party hat at The Bong alone and I'll feel reeeeaaaaalllly guilty.

But with enough warning I'll pencil you into THE ALMIGHTY GOOGLE CALENDER and if any boys be like "want me to buy you fancy cocktails and make out with me that night?" I'll say "usually the answer is FUCK YES but I am busy that night with plans that are WAY COOLER SORRY."

I prefer weekend nights for truly crazy getting-shitty-and-singing-songs types of meetups. I know it makes me old and lame, but I just can't do the hangover + going to work next morning thing.

Also old and lame: I am no good at costumes and have no interest in becoming good at costumes. If they are really and truly a required feature of an event, I'll have to pass.

Happy early birthday! I'm a "maybe" for anything the first week of November, since that's the week of the WFTDA Women's Roller Derby Championships, which I'm working.

But yeah, I've seen birthday cakes at the Goat. I can't imagine that'd be any problem whatsoever. Even if it were, I'm sure a $20 would solve it.

OK, I will be bringing a cake to this meetup in honor of MeFite birthdays (past, present, future, and bibliogrrl) and because cake is awesome. In order to ensure maximum cake enjoyment, I would like input on what the cake will be. Advance planning FTW.

For the cake itself I can knock out dark chocolate or basic yellow. I'm also willing to experiment with something crazy (chai spice? apple cinnamon?) if it's crowd-approved. (I'm gonna make a cake for Halloween anyway, so I can test-run a recipe first to make sure it doesn't suck.)

For frosting I can do vanilla buttercream, chocolate buttercream, chocolate ganache, peanut butter, or mocha. (PB and mocha will be best with chocolate cake; the rest are good for both.)

I'm also open to any suggestions. Let me know what you want!
posted by phunniemee at 4:44 PM on October 17, 2010

I vote dark chocolate with peanut butter frosting, but I am well-versed enough in cakepolitik to realize that this will probably not happen.
posted by adamdschneider at 9:15 PM on October 17, 2010

Hey, thanks to her sexy Latina heritage if you use peanut butter frosting it'll be easy to turn the cske into an edible portrait of Bunny Knuckles in honor of her oldening!

Not that this is a good idea. Actually, it's pretty creepy.

posted by shakespeherian at 7:50 AM on October 27, 2010

I'll be the (probable) voice of dissent:

I don't think we should make another longboat thread. Longboat threads created expressly for the purpose of becoming longboat threads really diminish the spirit of them.

We have (at least) one meetup every month, and most of the participants in the Thread that Ate Chicago will be paying attention to them. Our asshattery should stay in these threads, or if that's not acceptable, find someplace off-site to do it.

Should IRL be better integrated into the rest of the site as to be more visible? Sure.
Should IRL threads be left open for six months like Meetup MeTas were? Probably.
Should we respond to these issues by gaming the IRL event creation mechanism to give ourselves a thread that won't die? My vote is no.

posted by Juliet Banana at 9:58 AM on October 27, 2010

I'm with SpiffyRob on this issue. It seems a little... cliquey, cutesy, and cabal-y to pick one thread as the longboat thread when there are constantly new IRL threads arising. Frankly, I find it makes it confusing and more difficult to follow what's going on because then I have several meeting-chicago-peeps threads in my Recent Activity and I can't remember what thread was what.

What should I do with celeriac that came in the vegetable box last week?
posted by crush-onastick at 11:09 AM on October 27, 2010

-boil with potatoes and blend into mashed potatoes (I hate picky eaters so I do this with celeriac and parsnips just to spite them, you think you're eating plain jane potatoes but you are WRONG)

-boil, purée with sauteed garlic and shallots, use as a creamy bed to absorb the juices of a tasty steak

-cube, toss with a ton of olive oil and garlic, roast with other root veggies
posted by Juliet Banana at 11:21 AM on October 27, 2010

Everything is better with shallots.
posted by shakespeherian at 11:30 AM on October 27, 2010

I put shallots into EVERY SINGLE THING I COOKED last night.

-whisked with dill, lemon juice, salt, pepper, olive oil, and a touch of garlic into a lemony dressing for a tangle of arugula

-pureed with dill, lemon zest, a ton of garlic, butter, and parsley to create an herb rub for some chicken

-chopped and sweated with onions and garlic in butter that I then stirred baby spinach into until it wilted

-the mashed potatoes were leftover so they didn't have shallots but they did have parsley and cream cheese which is obviously superior to any sort of milk product for mashed potato purposes

-the Ginger-Lime Tres Leches cake from Xoco may have had shallots in it but they were giving it to me for free so I wasn't about to grill them on it's ingredient list

Even though I was in a bar last night, I kept it low key because I was planning on showing up (for a change lately) and was really looking forward to it all. The more I think about it, the more I think that even if Kirk shows up at 5 at the Goat (if he even shows up at the right Goat -- which if he didn't would speak volumes) and Giannoulias decides to join him, I bet it would be an in-and-out photo op at best so by the time we're scheduled to get there at 6, it would be over. I really hope, now that I have put this assumption on the Internet, it will not be wrong like the rest of my political punditry that has a self-serving motive usually is.

(It has also just been suggested by my boyfriend that I show up and throw a french fry at one of you and "accidentally" hit Mark Kirk - because it's not like he could get angry with all the reporters around when he's trying to be the bigger winner -- or that I get drunk on tiny beers and give him a piece of my mind. These things will not be happening, if only because I've already put them on the Internet.)

I hate to say it, but we may need to change venues.

So, fun fact: the Billy Goat actually has a phone. And I called it. Evidently there are "very few" people there right now, just the news crew, things are expected to go down at 5, and it's unclear what the situation will be at 6. He didn't give any warnings not to come, so maybe we should still try?

I'm in the Loop with two dozen difficult-to-transport chocolate ganache cupcakes waiting to be nommed, so we should seriously consider violently taking back what is ours. (Or doing something very nearby.)

(I'd offer up my place as a potential venue, but since it's not actually my place but my boyfriend's, it would be way uncool of me to make a decision like that.)
