Breakneck Ridge - A NYC Hiking Meetup
posted September 3, 2012 8:27 AM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sat October 13 at 8:00 AM, Breakneck Ridge
552 Riverside Dr, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's go for a walk in the woods. But not Bill Bryson style.
Breakneck Ridge is one of the signature hikes in the NYC area, and I want to do it! Rock scrambling, views of the Hudson, what's not to love?

We are meeting at my building in Harlem/Morningside Heights to pile into my car. I can accommodate four passengers. If you would prefer to take Metro-North, please let me know so we can coordinate your train arrival with our arrival.

Intrigued. And we have a car.

I am definitely interested in this.

Yes, I'd be up for this.

Can you link to a proposed route and length? And can there be a place for food/drinks/rest after?

I've never been hiking before, but I need to do more walking and other exercise.

Interested pending schedule.

I am in favor of this in theory, but my September is crazy and my long-suffering hiking boots just died (sole came off). If more of these happen that would be great motivation to get 'em fixed or get new ones.

Are dogs welcome?

i am very interested.

oops, forgot i previously posted. just goes to show my enthusiasm for all things hiking!

I am interested. I haven't been hiking in ages, although I have been walking enough lately.

Sorry for not responding earlier. You can find info for the Breakneck Ridge hike here. There are several variations, but most require rock scrambling. My sources tell me it is not super hard. As for dogs, this site does not indicate that dogs are always permitted on trails.

And yes, there will be food and drinks afterward. Exercise is just an excuse for a yummy meal afterward, right?

Been a while since I've been on a hike - I'm definitely interested.

What are people's date preferences? I would be fine with either Saturday or Sunday, but would prefer a Saturday (to avoid the end-of-weekend traffic).
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 11:30 AM on September 10, 2012

I share your preference for Saturday.
posted by grobstein at 12:27 PM on September 10, 2012

For Saturdays, that is.
posted by grobstein at 12:27 PM on September 10, 2012

Saturdays are better for me as well.
posted by ursus_comiter at 10:29 AM on September 11, 2012

I am in theory interested (I do a ton of hiking/mountaineering/outdoorstuff), but transport and free weekend logistics are complicated for me.

Please keep posting these and hopefully one day I will make it!
posted by larthegreat at 8:16 PM on September 11, 2012

Ok then, (a) Saturday it is. October 6th or 13th? Sciencegeek, do you have a preference for a day/date?
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 6:37 PM on September 12, 2012

Well, the 6th is cyclocross in Providence and the 13th is cyclocross in Troy. I'm going to go with the 13th for hiking, because Cooper River (Cherry Hill, NJ, let it be noted) is on the 14th; and I can only go to one CX event a weekend or my cowbell ringing hand gets tired.

The car and its driver are willing to go on the 14th, so Larthegreat, there is transportation possibilities there if the free weekend logistics work out.

Similarly intrigued pending schedule. I have one early-ish morning commitment on Saturdays in September and October, but I'd be done by 10 am.
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 6:53 AM on September 18, 2012

Ok, I propose October 13. Would a push-off time earlier in the morning work for everybody? Say, meet at 8 a.m. in Upper Manhattan?
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 12:03 PM on September 18, 2012

I'm in!
posted by Consonants Without Vowels at 5:21 PM on September 18, 2012

Works for me.
posted by ursus_comiter at 2:21 PM on September 19, 2012

Sweet! I'll finalize this. I just got a notice for a hike around the Ashokan Reservoir that same day. It's not exactly close by, but if I see something else similar for subsequent events, I'll post it and see if there are any takers.
posted by computech_apolloniajames at 6:51 AM on September 21, 2012

wait oct 13th is a go? I could probably make it! (and probably petition sciencegeek for a ride in that transport)
posted by larthegreat at 12:15 PM on September 24, 2012

Can we firm up the plans to meet up? Upper Manhattan is A-OK with me. Any time is fine too.
posted by ursus_comiter at 9:21 AM on October 2, 2012

Would it be possible to do this hike with a normal pair of sneakers? I don't have hiking boots. (I have Bean Boots, but those seem like the opposite of what I'd want for hiking.)

I've done this hike in sneakers before- and if its fairly dry (I did it in summer a few years ago from the train) and you're used to walking about for hours you should be fine.

and are we firming up plans? I find myself with the weekend free and the colors are supposedly in full swing slightly upstate from NY and this hike would be magnificent.

(I need transport. I am happy to chip in for gas)
posted by larthegreat at 7:10 AM on October 11, 2012

Yes I would still like to do this but am uncertain about the details. Is there a free seat in a (the?) car, or do I need to arrange my own transport, etc.? Thanks.
posted by grobstein at 8:23 AM on October 11, 2012

Uh oh -- there seems to be very little Metro North service to Breakneck Ridge on Saturday. Trains out arrive at 9:05am and 10:05am, and trains back leave at 4:57pm and 6:57pm. (Could I be misreading the schedule?)

It sounds like there is potentially a whole lot of waiting in store for any of us who travel by train. Anyone have a view on this?
posted by grobstein at 8:39 AM on October 11, 2012

sciencegeek did mention a car. Will drop them a memail. if there's enough folks that need a ride and could chip in, I could grab a zipcar.
posted by ursus_comiter at 11:16 AM on October 11, 2012

Metronorth only runs 2 trains a day to breakneck now, it's 4 during the summer. I don't recommend the train bit, especially if anyone wants to bail early or late/things go pieshaped.

I have a party of 2, heading out of the east village. I would be happy to chip in for a zipcar for the day.

I tried to claim spots in Sciencegeek's car last night, but haven't heard back.

I'll also be grabbing a backpack with first aid kit, snacks, extra layers and water, and have enough for anyone who is new to this hiking thing/gets caught unprepared.
posted by larthegreat at 11:34 AM on October 11, 2012

Well, a zipcar for the day is going to run about $150. :/

sorry about taking so long to reply. i am one of those people who does not have a smart phone and while i'm at work i'm not online.

me and the plus one are planning on driving. we have a tiny corolla which fits, total, five (so long as three of those five can squish in the back seat). i've vaguely promised larthegreat transportation. so that leaves space for one more person.

computech_appoloniajames also has mentioned a vehicle.

ok. now that i've delineated car capacity, i'm going to take off my work boots and relax. today was a day of digging ditches and then filling them in; my shoveling muscles are tired.
posted by sciencegeek at 1:41 PM on October 11, 2012

May I take that space, then? Cheers!
posted by ursus_comiter at 2:07 PM on October 11, 2012

Thanks for the response sciencegeek.

It looks like sciencegeek can accommodate 5 in her car (including herself +1), and computech_appoloniajames can accommodate 5 (including her(?)self).

That's 10 spots all told. I see 7 RSVPs above, so we should have room for everyone, and if everyone is meeting at the same spot Saturday morning we don't need to iron out all the details ahead of time. Which is great!

Huge thanks to our generous car-havers, and I of course am happy to chip in for gas, too.
posted by grobstein at 2:11 PM on October 11, 2012

I've claimed 2 spots in sciencegeek's car, and will head up to her place to meet up. (unless we still want to do the upperwest side meetup?)

now that we have transport, can we push back meeting points to about 9 am? (lazy larthegreat is lazy)
posted by larthegreat at 3:35 PM on October 11, 2012

I think we're going to rendez vous near computech_apolloniajames' place.
posted by sciencegeek at 4:09 PM on October 11, 2012

Excellent. That gives me an extra 30mins of sleeps.

Agreed. Let's do this again sometime soon. Really lovely day for a walk in the woods.
