Drunk Education - There’s No Ethical Consumption Under Capitalism

We all know that there’s no such thing as ethical consumption under capitalism, but what does that mean for the rest of our lives? This Drunk Ed show will ask questions like: What are the most cost-efficient crimes? How do you choose between all of your many garbage habits? And is it ethically acceptable for vegetarians to (literally) eat the rich? Talks by Kelli Korducki, John Leavitt (Mefi’s own The Whelk), Anna Merlan, and Eve Peyser. Tickets and information here!

ASSSSCAT: Upright Citizen's Brigade improv show at the UCB Theatre

There are lots of great shows every week at UCB, but the logistics of a UCB meet-up are complicated: post-work traffic is a problem, especially for earlier shows; there are no physical tickets; people may be reluctant to buy tickets a few weeks out; and many of the most popular shows sell out almost immediately so proposing a meet-up once the monthly schedule is announced may well be too late. ASSSSCAT is perfect because we can choose a date at our convenience, the show is free, it's on a Sunday, which has been a good day for meet-ups, and it's not too late for a school night.
  • WHAT: ASSSSCAT, one of the best-known improv groups.
  • WHERE: UCB Theatre, Hollywood
  • WHEN: Sundays, 7:30*
  • COST: Free!
*Show starts at 7:30, and I think people start lining up around 6:30. [more inside]

Nilap of SCINEGENICS corporation, as recently seen at the CHAD Chats; and the first ever land-based synchronized swimming performance, by the Olivia Darlings. Also -- a live palindrome competition featuring 3 competitors from the recent World Palindrome Championship -- winner msalt, popular author Jon Agee, and Australian master palindromist Martin Clear -- as well as Mary Lang (of the rock group Gift) and Dax. Audience members are invited to join -- bring paper pencil and a dictionary (or whatever tools you need) if you're interested.

A New Cyberpunk Musical Comedy - 2010: Our Hideous Future: The Musical! (Providence, RI)

It’s the way, far future, AD 2010, and it’s a bad time to be human. Freedom fighter Kate Brick plans a final strike against the Artas, artificial life forms who control humankind through torture, brainwashing, and Foursquare. Can Kate and her sometime-lover Dehnise Compuserve make a difference, or is it already too late? "2010: Our Hideous Future" is a synthpop-infused, queer-friendly musical comedy homage to the great dystopian classics of the 1980s and '90s. It features brilliant riffs on classics like “Blade Runner,” “Max Headroom,” and “The Matrix,” and delightfully twisted tunes like "Near Futuristic Dystopia!" and "Bangor Boogie.” Tickets ($10) are available online or at the door. Bridgetown Comedy Festival - Tabor Lounge I Showcase

Jon Daly (Jon Stewart, Conan, UCB, SNL)
Solomon Georgio (Seattle)
Don Frost (Portland)
Paul Jay (LA, Biggest Mistake podcast)
Marianne Sierk (LA, Live at Gotham)
Keith Lowell Jensen (famous atheist)

Hosted by Mark Saltveit (Metafilter, palindromes)

Solomon Georgio (lanky, very clever queer Ethiopian Seattlite) and Don Frost (blue collar stream of consciousness improv) are brilliant. I haven't worked with the other comics.

Bridgetown is one of -- if not THE -- best comedy festival(s) in the U.S. 180+ comics in 120+ shows at several venues along Hawthorne Street over several days (April 21-24th, 2011.) Plus long-form improv, sketch and live podcasts. These are the best "comics comics", not necessarily the Seinfelds and Chris Rocks', but some will get famous and all are doing great work right now. Margaret Cho, Andy Dick, Doug Benson, Oscar Nunez, Jimmy Dore, and Hannibal Buress you might know, but also don't miss Kyle Kinane, Kristen Schaal, Brent Weinbach, Moshe Kasher, Hari Kondabolu, Nick Thune, Auggie Smith, James Adonian, or Don Frost either. [So as not to be overdo it, I'm editing this first event to cover the show I'm hosting on Thursday night, at 10pm. ] [more inside]
