This New Englander will have some free time in Portland next month and I've never met the local MeFites. After some discussion we've settled on talk and drinks and food at The Mash Tun Brewpub on Alberta. We'll start around 6pm and stay there until we feel the need to walk the block to Salt and Straw or somewhere else the locals suggest. See you soon!

Every Sunday in October, Old World Village in Huntington Beach, puts on the sport of kings: Dachshund Racing! The races run from 3 PM to 4 PM. I propose Metafilters from far and near meet up at around 1 PM for sausages and beer. We'll carefully discuss the merits of the fine wiener dog athletes and then cheer them on. I'm not exactly sure, but I think the entry fees total out to $2. [more inside]

The 'Classic NY Movies with Lin-Manuel Miranda' film series at the United Palace of Cultural Arts theater continues, starting with The Fisher King. Doors open at 4pm, movie starts at 5pm, followed by a Q&A with screenwriter Richard LaGravenese at 7:15. This is a no-charge screening.

We're trying to get these going again. Clandestino, you know it, you love it (or at least find it mildly interesting).

Hi everyone! I was thinking it was high time we did another meetup, and I was thinking maybe we could do it at this new lovely bar that just opened in my neighborhood. I'm talking about Tick Tock, which opened maybe two weeks ago. It's got lots of space, a good selection, and is right next to Steve's Hot Dogs.

Guillermo Gómez-Peña and his radical performance art group La Pocha Nostra are hosting a "extreme fashion show and photo performance karaoke" with participants of a week-long performance workshop - including yours truly! Tickets are available here for $10 each and you are more than encouraged to dress up.

The Brattle Theater has a really good set of movies coming up this Sunday, 2014/9/14: Sunset Boulevard at 1:00, Chinatown at 3:15 (these two can be seen as a double feature), Los Angeles Plays Itself at 6:00, and Repo Man at 9:30. Does anyone want to go see any of these movies in particular? I saw that Los Angeles Plays Itself was scheduled and was primarily interested in that, but I'd be happy seeing any of these, really. The Museum of Jurassic Technology in Culver City is a place that engenders love and and serious confusion, perhaps in equal measures. It is a palace of many mythical wonders and it was proposed as one of the next meetup locations. It's open until 6:00 PM on Saturdays; the cafe offers complimentary tea and cookies until 5:00. (It is also close to the Center for Land Use Interpretation, which is equally a palace of wonders if you like scholastic text and resource allocation.
