sampling Scotch in Toronto

Sat February 11 at 8:00 PM, The Feathers Pub
962 Kingston Rd, Toronto, ON M4E 1S8, Canada (Map & Directions)
PLEASE NOTE: If you're not interested in Scotch, really just consider this a regular MeFi pub meetup... because it pretty much is! No obligation to drink any Scotch at all. More like... bonus whisky for those into that sort of thing.
So... I promised at the last meetup that I'd look into throwing together a "Scotch tasting meetup" sometime after the holidays. And here we are!

Edited on Thurs. Jan. 19th - confirming Feb. 11th as the date of this meetup (since there isn't any argument I'm hearing to keep it on the 4th, but I'm hearing a lot of people preferring the 11th instead).

The Feathers has three sampling menus put together for anyone coming in off the street: 5 or 6 different Scotches per flight, and the price points are $25, $50, and $65.

They have a large single malt selection if you would just like to try one or two Scotches on your own - no need to purchase a tasting flight if you don't feel like it. Very flexible.

tl;dr - The Feathers Pub, on Saturday, February 11th at 8 PM, lots of Scotch to try (and MeFites to talk about it with!). Who's interested?

Oh, and as usual, I can offer carpooling from the tri-cities.

I am so there!

Cleaned off wee drams of Ardbeg and Black Label mere moments before I clicked on this. I think it was meant to be!

what are the tri-cities? guelph kitchener waterloo?

Kif and I are there!

I think the tri-cities are Kitchener, Waterloo and Cambridge.

I am interested although I'm going to stick to the $25 option :)

I know that pub. This sounds interesting....

I'm definitely in for this -- great idea! The private tasting would be cool if we have anyone who could 'curate' a flight for us.
posted by sevenyearlurk at 6:07 AM on January 12, 2012

Ha! On their website they call the private tasting, "whiskey challenge." I'd rather a gentle introduction than a challenge.
posted by cranberrymonger at 6:49 AM on January 12, 2012

Best meetup idea ever! I'm definitely in, as long as the price stays reasonable.

Count me in tentatively. Kingston Rd. is sort of the ass-end of nowhere for me, and I will already be drinking a good deal of scotch in upcoming weeks. I'll give a more definitive answer closer to the date.

Excellent suggestion, and right up my alley! What is more certain than pencil, but not as permanent as ink when adding this to my calendar? That's where I am on this.
posted by peagood at 1:57 PM on January 12, 2012

This is an insane distance for me to go. It's practically the opposite side of the city.

See you there.
posted by randomination at 4:31 PM on January 12, 2012

May be out of town around then, not certain yet. Tentative maybe?

I'd like to come.

I'm not a whiskey person, but seeing y'all would be nice. Count me in!

Tragedy! I have to go to a house warming. For the record, this is such a good idea.

Do I have to be the token Scot there?

February 4th is their 11th Songwriter Showcase with Attachment 145 and Derek Christie.

Just FYI!

I'm a definite maybe, god, I feel awful about not committing but I feel like my life is on hold during this dissertation.
posted by saucysault at 5:09 PM on January 15, 2012

tapesonthefloor, actually I think the band there on the 4th is going to be this one: http://www.replaytoronto.com/

I just confirmed the date/time/venue, so we can get an idea of numbers, but if Derek Christie is a draw I'm open to moving the date to Feb. 11th. Y'all let me know.
posted by flex at 2:19 PM on January 17, 2012

If it was the 11th I'd totally be there. The wife wants to drive me and watch me gently tip whiskey down my neck, apparently. God knows why.

So if it moves, I'm in and so is routergirl. If it's the 4th then I will be in Detroit. Yes, I know, you don't need to tell me how much better Detroit is than Toronto...

I actually considered the weekend before this one (Jan 28) first - because it's the closest to Robbie Burns Day! But there's a meetup in Guelph called for that weekend. It seemed there might be overlap in attendance.

I chose Feb 4 over Feb 11 because Feb 11 is the weekend right before Valentine's Day and I thought people might have plans already? (Feb 11 would probably work slightly better for me, but I can do either weekend... now's the time to change the date if we want to do that.)
posted by flex at 2:57 PM on January 17, 2012

Curse my overactive social life! Feb 4th is definitely out for me but I may be able to convince the teetotaler boyfriend to come meet my drunken friends on the 11th.
posted by Phire at 3:01 PM on January 17, 2012

It's 19+, isn't it? Damn it.
posted by Meathamper at 9:26 PM on January 17, 2012

Count my preference for the 11th - mrgood's got a west-end gig on the 4th (starts late), and it would have been difficult to race across town to try to catch both events. Or, to enjoy my first meet-up so much and stay so late that I'd possibly have to explain that I was choosing strangers from the internet over him.
posted by peagood at 6:33 AM on January 18, 2012

I would also prefer the 11th actually - I'll be moving on the 4th
posted by iona at 7:17 AM on January 18, 2012

I can do either day.
posted by cranberrymonger at 8:41 PM on January 18, 2012

Meathamper: you can call the pub and ask if it's 19+? I've never been there before, so I'm not sure. I know they serve food, so it might not be.

...I'm going to go ahead and confirm this for the 11th - I haven't yet heard anyone say "I can do the 4th but I can't do the 11th" and I've heard a lot of the reverse. So Feb. 11th it is.

Lies! I was never friendly.

Listing myself as "attending" was a completely voluntary choice on my part and not a result of being bossed around. Nope. Not me.

Arghhh, I can't make this anymore. I was supposed to go out-of-town to visit a friend this weekend, and had to cancel because I'm doing overtime at work, so I'm making it up to her next weekend instead, and I'd forgotten that the meet-up was happening next weekend.

Have fun without me, guys :(

YOU SUCK.

All right, I called the pub and let them know a group of 10-15 of us are going to be there Saturday night and that most of us are probably going to be ordering whisky flights (they had asked that I tell them in advance so they can be prepared - I imagine that's a lot of glassware, heh).

So it's confirmed and I will see you all there! =)

Crap, got to flake out. We have to take youngest sun out for a meal as I won't be here for his birthday midweek - tonights the only night we can do it.

Sorry guys and girls (and indeterminate points in between or otherwise).

That was a fun night -- it was great seeing all you oldbies and newbies. (I shall scold the truants later.)

Any ideas for the next meet-up?

I'm late chiming in with my thanks to Flex for organizing this, and to express my gratitude to those that were kind enough to chat with me and make me feel welcome. And to apologize to those I didn't get around to. Yay for strangers from the internet!
