Tue September 20 at 7:00 PM, The Oasis
241 El Camino Real, Menlo Park, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
Hi! I'm going to be in Palo Alto for work and would love to get together with whoever can make it out on Sept. 20th.
We decided on meeting at The Oasis, and let's say 7 p.m., though I might be able to get there earlier.

How about either Cafe Borrone or The Oasis? Both have the virtue of being within walking distance of your hotel. Cafe Borrone has a larger menu, The Oasis is pretty much burgers & beer.

I'm definitely in!

And since I live about four blocks from your hotel, if we wind up going elsewhere, I can give you a ride.

Ambrosia, is the hotel swank? Someone else is paying, and when I looked up the reservation cost, I just about fainted.

Also, fwiw, I want beer. Everything else is super.

Yeah, the hotel is pretty swank. Not the swankiest by Silicon Valley standards, but you will be comfortable, and it's quite a step up from the Best Western across the way. Yay for nice hotels on someone else's dime.

I'm in!

I'm in if my date agrees. I vote for the Oasis, Beer Gardens make me happy.

If your date does not agree to meet your invisible friends from the internet, you should post an askme about that issue.

I am so there.

I'm in. Places to get beer:

Rudy's
The Rose and Crown
Nola
The Old Pro

Those are the standard downtown PA drinking spots. There are some swankier ones. There are also some divier ones on El Camino and further south.

Holy moly! I could actually make this one!
posted by bakerina at 8:28 AM on August 30, 2011

I'm most likely in. Rose and Crown is a dive but does have really good beer. Sadly I'm driving and cannot get loaded regardless of where we go. Borrone is also great. Haven't been to Oasis.
posted by MillMan at 10:03 AM on August 30, 2011

Rose and Crown might be packed that night because it's Tricia night and school is back in session. Also the bar area (inside and out) is kinda small.
posted by sarahnade at 3:49 PM on August 30, 2011

I meant *trivia* night. I don't know who Tricia is. You can't prove anything.
posted by sarahnade at 3:50 PM on August 30, 2011 [2 favorites]

Okay, yeah, if it's Trivia Night @ Rose and Crown just cross that off the list. We'd have to get there 4 hours before it starts to get a table.

Empire Tap Room? We could sit outside. I've never been to Oasis, but I'd be down for that too.

I am kind of curious about this "Tricia night."

I'll try to make this one!

I think I can actually make this (waiting on confirmation of when the next curling league starts - yeah, I know) and I hope it works out because this is right in my backyard. If we end up at the Oasis I am absolutely within drunken stumbling distance home.

Same goes for me, and for Stewriffic.

OK, let's make that call then. Oasis....say 7 p.m.

It's also within drunken stumbling distance of Caltrain and both SamTrans and VTA buses. Yay!

Hello, folks. I am attending college here starting this year, and although it appears that I can't go to this meetup due to etoh I would just like to know how often and how often at a bar you have these sorts of shenanigans (I know about the location irl filter, but that only shows up if you arrange events and stuff), because they would be nice shenanigans.
posted by curuinor at 9:47 AM on September 5, 2011

I'm assuming "due to etoh" means you can't go because (a) you're not 21, or (b) you have some other problem with Alcohol. AFAIK this is the first Palo Alto meetup in the last year or two, but if there is good turn-out I would be up for a recurring gathering. Perhaps monthly. And at that time we could probably arrange a non-alcohol-only-all-ages venue. Or, even better, if you want to organize one, go for it.

I'd like to come if I can get out of work at a normal hour.

You can always go back to work afterward.

I just put myself down as a Maybe since it turns out the new curling league starts that night, but it doesn't start until 9:30 so I could probably come for the first hour or so until I need to head out.
posted by marylynn at 12:00 PM on September 12, 2011

Wait, curling? Like the winter Olympic sport that is hypnotic and I can watch it for hours? That's a thing here? Tell us more!
posted by rtha at 12:17 PM on September 12, 2011 [1 favorite]

Yeah, please come so you can tell us about curling!
posted by zsazsa at 4:12 PM on September 12, 2011

Yes, the very same Olympic-hypnotic sport! There's a very much thriving curling club in the bay area that plays in three locations year-round (and another club in Vacaville). I even have a club jacket with my name on it and everything.

I'll try to remember to post an IRL for the next time we have a one-night clinic. I usually teach at any in San Jose but we have them in Oakland as well.

That is so cool. For real!

Just settling into the hotel! Not as swank as I'd hoped. Oh well. I'll see everyone tomorrow night.

I can't believe you all are going to be meeting up right in my neighborhood on an evening when I absolutely, unequivocally can't make it.

Have fun, everyone.
posted by tangerine at 4:32 PM on September 19, 2011

So, how does this work, anyway? Should we ask for the people from the internet? Or are you all going to be wearing your top hats and Metafilter t-shirts? (Do such things exist?)
posted by thewumpusisdead at 5:22 PM on September 19, 2011

The thing to do is to look for large parties with a MeFi sign on the table and/or ask if they're friends of Matt Haughey. I have a "Please hope me" MeFi t-shirt; I'll try to wear it tomorrow!

Well then, we'll just have to do this again, won't we?

I called the Oasis last week or so to try to make a reservation for tonight's meetup, and was waved off as being entirely unnecessary, so I'm guessing they don't usually get large groups on Tuesday evenings. First look for a big table, and usually there is a sign, and or cameras.
posted by ambrosia at 1:28 PM on September 20, 2011

I am not going to be able to make it tonight but I wanted to let people know (since it sounds like some might be interested) that there is going to be a one-night learn to curl clinic next Tuesday. Since I'm not sure if I'm actually going to be teaching that one it doesn't seem right for an IRL but just in case you all want to get drunk and sign up tonight... Feel free to memail me if you want more information.

Stewriffic, I hope you enjoy your visit here! Is the hotel like Best Western-ish? It looks so swanky from the outside!
posted by marylynn at 2:39 PM on September 20, 2011

Ok I'm here! Turquoise shirt, suit jacket on table. I grabbed a long table perpendicular to the bar.
posted by Stewriffic at 6:11 PM on September 20, 2011

The hotel is fine. At first I couldn't find COffee pot or hairdryer. I like it more now. :)

On me way.
posted by zsazsa at 6:43 PM on September 20, 2011

We moved and are parallel to the bar at a different long table.
