Pre-Labor Day Portland Backyard Beer & BBQ Meetup

Sun September 4 at 3:00 PM, Chez mrzarquon
555 NE 63rd Ave, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
DjangoCon is taking place in Portland the first week of Sept. (9/4--9/10) and I'd love to meet up with some Portland MeFites while I'm there!
I had no idea when I first proposed a meetup that this thread would be so tortuous, but I think it's finally been settled:

The super-awesome mrzarquon has invited us to join him at his house for a (pre-)Labor Day beer & BBQ blowout. He is located right off the Red/Green/Blue Max Line at the 60th street station on the eastside.

As he's mentioned downthread:
Pork, Chicken and Beef will all be featured, in various forms and concoctions. If you would like to bring something, sides are always welcome.

There will be a collection of beverages available, I do suggest a $5 donation (more is always welcome) to help cover the bar tab, and you can also bring your own stuff as well.
This is my first time in Portland and I'd love to meet some native MeFites! Hope to see you there.

Assuming you're not going to be too tired/jet lag'd, the 4th would probably be best, as that's a Sunday.

I'd probably be down, but I'm out of town through the 5th.

Yay for Django and Python. I've missed the last few meetups so I'd like to catch this one if possible. The 4th works for me.

Even though y'all are talking about neither Django Reinhardt nor Monty Python, I'm still up for a meetup. I'm a 9-to-5-er, so any evening's fine.

I'm flying from LAX at a decidedly ungodly hour on Sunday morning, but I should be okay to meet later in the day, on the 4th.

Where would be a good place to meet? I'm partial to food-based meetups but am open to anything!

Well poop. I and TheDonF will be in England.

Enjoy all the wonderful food Portland has to offer!

I'd be up for a meetup on the 4th.

Sunday night the 4th works for me.

Anyone have any good suggestions for downtownish meet up venues? It's a bit out on 21st, but Pope House has frito pie, and North 45 has some great beer and outdoor seating as well.
posted by mrzarquon at 8:31 PM on August 14, 2011

mrzarquon, frito pie sounds amazing! Are either of those places easily accessible (public transit or walking) from the Hilton on SW 6th Ave?

I might also just throw out that, as a big fan of Los Angeles gourmet food trucks, I'm curious about your local food cart scene -- is that worth checking out, and do those trucks convene anywhere on Sundays?
posted by estherbester at 11:08 PM on August 14, 2011

Our trucks don't usually move around, instead we have pods where you can go and pick from 10-12 different carts all in the same area, some with communal table spaces, etc. Kind of like a moving LA Farmer's Market.

I don't know which of the downtown pods are open on sunday (a lot of them are m-f lunch carts), but this would be a good starting point if you want to see the master index of carts around town.

I will be with estherbester! I'm giving a talk at DjangoCon. I've never been in Portland before. Downtown is great and I'm down to try craft beer since that's what everyone I know raves about. :)

In the past we've gone to Deschutes and Bridgeport.

Deschutes didn't work so well, but Bridgeport was ok. Although more than 6-8 people makes it difficult.
posted by nickthetourist at 6:01 PM on August 16, 2011

Yeah, I was flipping through past PDX meetups and was actually going to suggest Bridgeport (also Tugboat or Bailey's but neither of those seems to be open on Sundays).

So I've gone ahead and made it official -- hope I did this correctly!
posted by estherbester at 1:56 PM on August 17, 2011

Bridgeport has more space than Bailey's or Tug Boat, but it might be a good idea to reserve a table once there is a good head count. It can fill up quickly.

So, I stupidly forgot that this was the day I was planning to host my labor day BBQ at my house.

So I won't be able to make the meet up at BridgePort, but, if people are interested, you all are more than welcome to come to my BBQ.

I am right off the Red/Green/Blue Max Line at the 60th street station on the eastside. There will be a lot of beer and meat.

I'm down as "maybe" for now as my plans for that weekend are still in flux.
posted by spherical_perceptions at 5:44 PM on August 22, 2011

Oh, mrzarquon, really? =D

I'll leave it up to everyone else, I guess -- we could always reschedule the meetup (maybe a weekday evening would work better for people anyway?) and take mrzarquon up on his generous invitation, but if most people would rather stick to the original plan that's totally cool too.

On the food carts scene, here is the definitive blog. You'll want to pay particular attention to the SW Alder & 9th / SW Washington & 10th food cart lot (about 5 blocks away from DjangoCon/Hilton). That lot does ridiculous workday lunch business, weekends I'm not sure which might be open.

Yeah, if folks are acceptable to relocating the meet up to my place, I am more than willing to add you guys to the invite list.
posted by mrzarquon at 11:03 AM on August 25, 2011

Here is the invite, extended to you, MetaFilter-ites:

Mark your calendars and get ready for Meat Consumption.

Starting at 3pm on Sunday, September 4th, I will be having a BBQ at my house (address to follow).

That's awesome of you, mrzarquon, thanks!

Also, if anyone wants to try that food cart pod at SW Alder/9th or SW Washingnton/10th during the week, give me a shout on Twitter (same username).

I've changed the location/time, so hopefully everyone catches this before they head out and can plan accordingly!

BLUE CHEESE COLESLAW

(I'm looking at you Greg)
posted by mrzarquon at 3:40 PM on September 1, 2011

Never fear, the ingrediments are already on my shopping list. Roughly how many people are you expecting - i.e. less than 10? Maybe more than 20 or so? 50? I'd hate to under-plan, make too little, and disappoint all my loyal fans!
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:20 PM on September 1, 2011

I was guessing around 20-30 would be a safe number.

There are going to be real people there, not just Mefites?
posted by mimo at 8:57 PM on September 1, 2011

Some real people, some people who are mefites, some people who are both.
posted by mrzarquon at 9:19 PM on September 1, 2011

I have met some of the likely non-mefite real people, they seemed like nice enough folks even if some of them are a lot better at cornhole than I am.
posted by cortex at 9:31 PM on September 1, 2011

One of the non-mefites I have met is from reddit, though, so beware.

Meat has been purchased. Now I really hope you folks show up for the BBQ, or else I am going to have a meat surplus.
posted by mrzarquon at 12:14 PM on September 2, 2011

meat surplus

I flatly deny that such a thing is possible.

Same goes for system RAM and disk storage, by the way
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:26 PM on September 2, 2011

I can bring zucchini. And zucchini party favors. If I don't eat it, I think I will also bring olive bread.

BRING PIE

or lemon squares
posted by curious nu at 10:57 AM on September 4, 2011

nu, I'm so sorry, there is zero probability I will bring either pie or lemon bars today. Conditions appear favorable for the next music/potluck meetup though.

Do we have the address?
posted by mimo at 12:23 PM on September 4, 2011

Just click on the blue flag on the google map above, will give you the address.
posted by mrzarquon at 12:34 PM on September 4, 2011

OK, wasn't sure if that was a decoy address.
posted by mimo at 12:51 PM on September 4, 2011

Nope, real address, but it will go away once the meet up happens, which is why I am not posting a comment with it in it.
posted by mrzarquon at 1:15 PM on September 4, 2011

Sorry I am running late! I think I'm about 20 minutes away
