Pre-Back-to-School Philadelphia meetup
posted August 5, 2010 9:31 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Fri August 20 at 8:00 PM, World Cafe Live
3025 Walnut St, Philadelphia, PA, USA (Map & Directions)
A bunch of people are meeting up to view this performance. Free admission and beers for under $5 Anyone remember when that was a lot for a beer?
Old post, for posterity:

Philly MeFites, it has been too long. I say we get one last meetup in before the summer is over.

On the one hand it's awful hot, so maybe meeting indoors or in the evening might be nice. On the other hand, before we know it it'll be gray and cold, so perhaps something outdoorsy might be more appropriate. Either way, food, drink, and havering will certainly take place.

Generalized "I'm up for it" here. More specific response dependent on location, activity, time/date.

I have no ideas for any of the above. I'm useful!

I'm also down, but I have no ideas. I'll come back when I think about it a little more.

I'll just say, right now, I (and supercres, too) can't do August 13th, 14th, or 21st.

Otherwise, it looks good. Can't wait!

Heh, I was just discussing next meet up possibilities with my non-sexual life partner (desuetude) over lunch yesterday. General consensus after the last one seemed to be that cheaper is better, maybe something outdoors. We could always rock a picnic at Lemon Hill. Not at the actual mansion, there's covered spaces you can party under in that part of the park, though I'm not familiar with how to reserve one, or if it's just first come, first serve.

But, if it's still 60000 degrees outside, fuck a picnic. Air conditioning.

Talking about Philly meetups with The Straightener (at a Brooklyn meetup) has persuaded me that I need to come to Philly for one soon.

Now that they have a State College-Philadelphia route on the Megabus I'll put myself down as a 'maybe.'

One possibility: Sunday, August 23rd there's a Caribbean Festival at Penn's Landing. That does mean something outdoors but I've found it seems cooler by the river.

I love the idea of a picnic! If we do it, I'll bring Pimm's cup and brownies! Also, this planning meetups only on the IRL site is strange and frightening to me. :(

Hey, I'm yaymukund on mokudekiru's account. We would like to attend a Philly meetup during mid-late August but our school begins around August 22nd and she's going to be in NYC some of those days. More details to come...!

(Also yeah, had a great time at the NYC meetups and looking forward to meeting some of you again)

I'm freshly unemployed and up for anything! Let's meetup!

Ditto!

Agreed! I'll start things off by suggesting Friday the 20th, because it happens to be convenient for me, whereas the 21st is probably not.
posted by Tomorrowful at 8:29 PM on August 10, 2010

The 20th works for me.

The 20th works for me, too.

So like what the shit?
posted by The Straightener at 9:51 AM on August 12, 2010

I'd totally do a picnic, but I'd be pleased to go to the South Philly Taproom again. They seem to have the room for our large group. A lot of my favorite places don't. Plus, air conditioning.

20th, let's do it!
posted by mokudekiru at 11:41 AM on August 12, 2010

Do what! I'm in for a picnic. We've never done one before as a meetup, but I can't tell how much enthusiasm there is for the idea. Why so quiet, Philadelphia?!
posted by lagreen at 11:59 AM on August 12, 2010

Actually, look what else is going on on the 20th...we could show our support for a fellow mefite...and hear free live music, too.
posted by lagreen at 12:02 PM on August 12, 2010 [1 favorite]

Ooh I'm sooo up for free live music. That'd be my first choice probably, though I'm cool with picnicking as well...

And yes, please speak up, rest of Philly!
posted by mokudekiru at 12:16 PM on August 12, 2010

I'm tentatively up for August 20th with live music.
posted by Deathalicious at 1:46 PM on August 12, 2010

Sounds great to me. Should we just switch over to that one then?
posted by two lights above the sea at 6:53 PM on August 12, 2010

Yes! Please come!
posted by useyourmachinegunarm at 7:11 PM on August 12, 2010

I'm totally up for that!

By way of disclaimer, World Cafe Live is a great place but it isn't cheap. I think it's entirely within a reasonable range for a meetup, just wanted to make sure everyone's aware of it, given the cost comments that came out of the last one.

I'll see all of you there!
posted by Tomorrowful at 7:28 AM on August 13, 2010

I've got a bachelor party that I'm running at the end of the month, and all my free $ is going to that. I might be up for something if it's *CHEAP*
posted by SansPoint at 4:47 AM on August 14, 2010

The show at World Cafe is FREE! There appear to be plenty of beers on the menu for $4.25.

Hey, sorry that I'm just making it over here to this thread. Still getting used to the IRL site. Weekends are kinda out for me through most of the fall, though, so you good people will have to survive without me on the 20th.

Now that I work a lot closer to Fairmount Park, I've gotta say that I'm dying to get to know it better.

If there is anyone geeky enough to do a guided tour with me, Laurel Hill Cemetery has a twilight tour on Wednesday the 18th. It's $20, though, and I'd need a little help with transportation.
posted by desuetude at 10:10 PM on August 14, 2010

I've taken a tour at Laurel Hill and it is totally awesome. Our tourguide was a part-time college professor, part-time Ben Franklin reenactor. We learned about the symbolism of the gravestones in different eras, awesome old traditions, various rich wierdos last decisions, and the history of the land. It's also simply beautiful as a park and you get to go in a scary old crypt! Definitely worth 20 bucks!

It looks like there's a sort-of consensus for seeing ludwig_van at World Cafe on Friday. Deathalicious, do you want to move this from "proposed" to "upcoming" meetups? Also, do people want to arrive at 8 rather than 9 so we can hang for a bit before he goes on?
posted by lagreen at 4:10 AM on August 16, 2010

Hey guys - just wanted to mention that the show starts at seven and Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies go on at 10. We will be there by 8 for sure.
posted by useyourmachinegunarm at 9:55 AM on August 16, 2010

I will be there tonight probably by 7:30 or so. I'll be so ready for a drink. Yay!
posted by piratebowling at 12:04 PM on August 20, 2010

I'm also aiming to arrive around 7:30.

I'm here, wearing a yellow tshirt, glasses, and beard.

oh no playing hooky on my own irl. Sorry all couldn't make it see you in the fall.

I had a great time too! Let's get together again soon. ludwig_van says thanks for coming out!
