Yes, another meetup in NYC

Sat March 19 at 7:00 PM, Chelsea Piers
Chelsea Waterside Park, W 23rd St, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
Bowling! It will be fun, no need to be any good at bowling (I'm useless, so you will probably be better than me). Let me know if you're in, so I have an idea of numbers. After bowling there will no doubt be food and drink somewhere nearby. (The map is not entirely accurate, but putting in the correct address somehow screws up Google Maps and brings up a location on the East River.)

I might be out of town, but if not ...I am a maybe for something, possibly.

March can be sketchy in terms of weather, but I'd love an outside meet up - maybe in one of the botanical gardens?
posted by sciencegeek at 8:55 AM on February 27, 2011

Saturdays are somewhat better for me.
posted by Karmakaze at 5:15 AM on February 28, 2011

Hmm. Outdoor meetups are great as long as the weather's with us. Maybe our contingency plan is a museum?
posted by Eideteker at 6:09 AM on February 28, 2011

I understand the desire to Bring the Spring, but planning on outdoors for March seems a bit... optimistic.
posted by hermitosis at 7:12 AM on February 28, 2011

We fly back from NC on the morning of the 19th, so please pick the 19th! And I agree that planning something outdoors is probably overly optimistic.

If you need an idea of how evil the March weather in NYC is, for the past 2 weeks, every time I decided I was going to start running the next morning, which has been like almost every other day, I wake up to find rain. Like this morning for exa.....oh, wait, maybe the weather is trying to help me out here. Nevermind.

n00bz invited?
posted by Rickalicioso at 9:59 AM on February 28, 2011

Of course n00bz are welcome. And yes, let's make it the 19th, so my Social Secretary, ThePinkSuperhero, can be there.

OK, let's go for something indoors, that's fun and that won't cost too much. On Saturday, 19th March.
posted by essexjan at 10:29 AM on February 28, 2011

I'm trying to think of some good ideas. Karaoke? Spa Castle/Russian Turkish Baths? Pottery painting? Bowling?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 1:50 PM on February 28, 2011

Driving range? Ice skating?
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 8:42 AM on March 1, 2011

Bowling or karaoke would be good. The pottery painting could be awesome. I'm not keen on the spa idea and I can't skate.

Do they have 'sing-a-long' movies in NYC, you know, special performances of well-known musicals where they have the words on screen and everyone can sing along, usually The Sound of Music, Grease, Mamma Mia, South Pacific, etc. That might be fun.
posted by essexjan at 12:00 PM on March 1, 2011

it would be at the Chelsea Clearview or IFC center, if anywhere.

My shy newbie ass would totally show up for this. Oh please, please!

They do them every now and again, usually in conjunction with a re-release. The 92Y Tribeca does them sometimes, but not that night. Let's all keep our eyes open for events on March 19th!

How about an evening of Professional Wrestling?
posted by jason's_planet at 4:32 PM on March 1, 2011

Good grief, j_p and TPS!
posted by essexjan at 12:49 AM on March 2, 2011

I would be interested in seeing professional wrestling live. I have a sneaking feeling that it, like figure skating, is infinitely more awesome when seen live. I do have a budget limit though.

Let's do something different this time - no bar/dinner/karaoke.
posted by sciencegeek at 4:15 AM on March 2, 2011

The wrestling is likely to be too expensive for some people - the cheapest tickets are $31 with tax, and the cheap seats at MSG are shite.
posted by essexjan at 7:14 AM on March 2, 2011

$31x2 is definitely more than I'd want to pay for a night of professional wrestling.

MEET THE LADY: DREAM SEQUENCES (hosted by Kevin Maher & Tom Blunt): "a video variety show arranged around a theme, with guest speakers/performers, rare film clips, trivia and prizes." March 25th, $12. Can you shift the date of your visit to 25 March, or does it have to be the week before?
posted by brainwane at 1:38 PM on March 2, 2011

Er, sorry no brainwane, flights and accommodation were booked weeks ago and can't be changed.
posted by essexjan at 1:46 PM on March 2, 2011

I was kind of goofin'

But my suggestion isn't gaining traction.

So . . . what's next on the list?

Driving Range.

That could be fun. Any ideas on specific locations?

Ah yes, Chelsea Piers.

I found out I'm (check the other IRF) not gonna be here on the 19th, so go on wit out me.
posted by The Whelk at 7:14 PM on March 3, 2011

Whelk, I'll try and catch up with you for lunch one day if you're around any of the weekdays leading up to that weekend. MeMail me your cell number if you'll be in town. I have kind of a full schedule but it'd be great to see you again.
posted by essexjan at 12:46 AM on March 4, 2011

I really like the idea of bowling. I've only done it once before and scored 38 (and 7 of those points were scored when someone else took my turn while I was at the bar buying a round), so you can see you'd be in for a serious ass-kicking. I think it would be fun if we could get two or three lanes (depending on numbers) for a couple of games, and then find somewhere to eat after that.
posted by essexjan at 12:52 AM on March 4, 2011

There's a bowling alley, with food and drinks, at the Port Authority too. Rates seem similar. Just thought I'd mention it. It's called Frames now (www.framesnyc.com).

Looking forward to your visit, ej!

So, are people on board for bowling? Either venue is fine by me. Let's take a head count of who is in for this and then we can make a booking.
posted by essexjan at 3:01 PM on March 5, 2011

Bowling sounds fun! We're in.
posted by ThePinkSuperhero at 8:12 PM on March 5, 2011

I am terrible at bowling but I will love to attend.
posted by kkokkodalk at 10:52 AM on March 6, 2011

You can't be any worse than me, kkokkodalk. We can be terrible together.
posted by essexjan at 12:48 PM on March 6, 2011

I love bowling too! Count me in!
posted by jason's_planet at 4:53 PM on March 6, 2011

Any preferences on the venue? I'm thinking Hell's Kitchen, but if people prefer Chelsea Piers, I'll go with that. If you want to go, put your name in this thread. As it stands now, we have enough people for one lane, which will be the default if more people don't say they're coming.
posted by essexjan at 10:09 AM on March 7, 2011

Wouldn't it be easier to keep a head-count once this is moved out of the 'proposed' section and we have the yes/no/maybe buttons? (I'd vote for Chelsea Piers, mainly because I commuted via Port Authority for years, and my brain can't compute the idea of that place as being somewhere to go for recreation rather than somewhere to trudge through in a zombified commuter haze.)
posted by oh yeah! at 9:05 PM on March 7, 2011

WTF is up with that map? It was fine on preview. It's not on the East River, but on the Hudson.
posted by essexjan at 9:53 AM on March 8, 2011

The venue is here
posted by essexjan at 10:08 AM on March 8, 2011

Jeez, Google Maps is absolutely fucking borked. The address is:

Chelsea Piers, New York 11011, NY.

Put it into Google Maps, it'll bring up the right location. Then (or is this just me?) copy the link from the 'link' tag on the map, paste it and it'll bring up the location on the East River. Go figure.

Aw I am going to be away for the weekend with my sister but I would love to see you for lunch or otherwise while you are here!

I'm coming, as long as I can bring my own ball and shoes.

Kind of apropos of nothing, but my #2 favorite pair of pajama pants have a cartoon bowling ball and pins on them with the whimsical phrase "Grab your balls! We're going bowling!"
posted by kkokkodalk at 4:55 PM on March 15, 2011

I own three bowling balls, actually. Two were passed down to me from my father when he passed away, like something out of legend. One of those was reforged (well, okay, re-drilled) for my hand.

I'll probably not carry all three with me on the Subway as they can be rather heavy and my back's not quite up to it anymore.
posted by Eideteker at 9:00 AM on March 16, 2011

essexjan has asked me to call the location, and I think we can just meet up at the bowling lanes itself; I think there's a little loungy area we can chill in while we wait for them to get our lanes.
