Mid Week Board Game Night in PDX

Thu February 10 at 9:00 PM, Cascade Brewing Barrel House
939 SE Belmont St, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
In order to survive the cold damp winters of Portland, I suggest we try to coordinate a midweek game night somewhere around town.
I was at Vintage last night with cortex and secretariat, and we realized it would be a good place to have a bunch of mefites hangout and play some board games, and drink some cocktails. It is right off Stark in Montavilla, and you can grab either the 20 or 15 bus to get there pretty easily.

Depending on the size of the group, I can see about being able to order in pizza (they have good food, but couldn't handle a rush of 20+ folks ordering food all at once, your bartender makes your sandwich as well, etc.).

I'd be up for it. I've got a few boardgames just sitting gathering dust - Pictionary, Trivial Pursuit, Othello, Backgammon (if I can remember the dang rules, it's been ages) - that I'd be willing to cart along.

Yes! I am totally into this. If it's midweek, could we please do it Thursday? I work Sunday through Wednesday.

I could totally be down, depending. What kind of boardgames are we talking here-- old skool Monopoly / Sorry / Life or fancy new skool euro stuff like settlers or carcassonne?

Also, I'll kick any of y'all's asses at trivial pursuit any day of the week.

(Also - I've got the Genus II, III, and Baby Boomer sets that I've never even cracked open yet)
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:16 PM on January 22, 2011

I prefer old-skool games (except Monopoly) to German-style games, but I'll play anything at least once.

I will gladly take on both dersins and Greg_Ace in Trivial Pursuit.

(Maybe not with the Baby Boomer set, though.)

I'd be up for it, but I am unavailable Tuesdays and Thursdays.
Why not a Friday?

Interesting, verrry interesting. Keep me updated on this plan.

Oh, but Tuesdays and Thursdays are out of my range until school's over, and I work until 11pm on Fridays. Also, I'm allergic to tiddlywinks and backgammon pieces, as well as the coating on Monopoly boards from 1940-1979. Other than that, anything goes!

$2.00 for spiced nuts? They'd better be good.

I prefer games that don't require a ton of strategy or calculation of probabilities. I also lose a lot, but I'm a good sport about it.

We'd be down with this.

> Why not a Friday?

Vintage is a small place, I was figuring if we did something Sunday through Thursday, it would be slow enough that a swarm of nerds playing games would be welcome. If there is a group and it's a slow night, they could possibly let us order pizza from flying pie across the street, etc.

There is also BiPartisan cafe next door which has coffee, pie, and places to sit, if folks want to use that space instead.

So far it looks like there's no one day that works for everyone. Maybe alternate between two days - say, Monday one time and Thursday the next? I can see how easily that could get into a schedule mixup ("Why is nobody here? I thought we were meeting on Monday this time??") but that looks like the only way to be able to include everyone. Maybe some sort of mnemonic like META - Mondays Even, Thursdays Alternate (i.e. the odd-numbered week/month/whatever)....
posted by Greg_Ace at 2:05 PM on January 24, 2011

Come to think of it, Tues/Thurs could work for me depending on how late everyone would be hanging around. I have class those nights until 8:50. So, the gaming were likely to be going on past 10:00....
posted by nickthetourist at 3:16 PM on January 24, 2011

Trivial Pursuit sounds fun, gets my vote. Weekday evenings usually work provided we start late enough (e.g. after 8pm), and also provided nothing blows up in my lab on that particular afternoon.
posted by spherical_perceptions at 4:52 PM on January 24, 2011

Just to give folks an idea of the space, there are 7 tables that sit 2 people, usually there are 3 sets of 4 and a solo 2 person arrangement (you can move the tables around). Two four person round tables, and a long bar height table that seats 6.

Our total gaming seating would be 28.

Talking to the owner, groups up to 16+ would be easy to do on Sunday's and Monday's. If we all wanted food off their menu, he'd need to know ahead of time to bring in a second person to cook, otherwise we could order pizzas from flying pie. Of course folks could feed themselves beforehand as well.
posted by mrzarquon at 8:09 PM on January 24, 2011

We're in. If you want more than just Trivial Pursuit, we have Thunderstone, Qwirkle, Power Grid, etc.

I can also bring Shut the Box if you're in a drinking mood...
posted by geckoinpdx at 12:44 AM on January 25, 2011

OMG. I have sooooo many games! Although most of them don't work with more than 6 (no more 9-player games of Illuminati!) so we'd need to split up or keep it to a small group.

What about the Tugboat? They're small, too, and located downtown. Plus they have their own games.

What about Monday nights? I think we'll probably just have to pick a day and time and make it sort of a "come or not" sort of thing, not a recurring meetup.
posted by fiercekitten at 4:33 PM on January 25, 2011

I have a big work deadline next week. Can this please occur/recur sometime after the 7th?

Couldn't Trivial Pursuit be played simultaneously across several boards at the same time? Question boxes are passed to the table on the right every half hour (or some such).

It appears a consensus is slowly building toward Monday or Wednesday, starting maybe the second week of February - does that sound about right? That's going to leave a few people out, though, unless we can vary the day a bit. Maybe pick a different weekday each month....

I've been a bad IRL organizer. My life has been hectic and will continue be so until atleast 2/15 it now looks like.

I don't have any problem in helping you guys shore up a date for something before then, but I wont be able to attend.

So far we have a possible venue at Vintage if folks want to do it Sunday-Tuesday (Thursday is their industry night, other bartenders get 40% off there, so it tends to get crowded). Other venues have been proposed as have other days of the week.

Maybe someone picks a new venue for the 2/10 get together, sees how it works, and we just kind of rotate around the city to find other places?
posted by mrzarquon at 9:04 PM on January 31, 2011

I'll vote for 2/10 at 9pm to get things started, and we can discuss options for subsequent meets as we go.

While I don't have a suggestion for venue, I will say that Tugboat is kinda dark as I recall.

That works for me.
And now for a venue....

How about the Green Dragon?

Good beer, plenty of space.
Only concern is how full will this place be at 9:00 on a Thursday evening....
posted by nickthetourist at 5:24 PM on February 2, 2011

I'd suggest cascade over green dragon, long tables, better beer, better service, and it's just across the street.

Whichever one is likely to be less noisy gets my vote.
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:27 AM on February 3, 2011

To clarify: I have no experience with Cascade, but twice now Green Dragon has struck me as being prohibitively noisy - in the context of trying to communicate with a group to play board games like we're talking about.

This Thursday may not work for me (unexpected last-minute wedding to attend), but if I can I'll try to make it a little later in the evening...
posted by dersins at 5:31 PM on February 7, 2011

I can throw that up there on the big board if that works for folks.

Also, for future plans, I discovered that Caldera Public House has private seating for 32 upstairs, with no room charge / or minium. We just got to order food and call ahead to reserve the space so they know if they need an extra person on staff. To soon for thursday, but next time around it may work perfectly.

Oh hey this thing. This is a thing that I like the idea of as well.

While I don't have a suggestion for venue, I will say that Tugboat is kinda dark as I recall.

Yup. And sometimes noisy. It would work well for games that don't require a whole lot of verbal acknowledgement or lots of reading; we could do a dice night there, get our yahtzee on, play about five million rounds of Zombie Dice, maybe track down a Cosmic Wimpout set.
posted by cortex at 6:25 PM on February 7, 2011

I like mrzarquon's idea for next time.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:20 PM on February 7, 2011

Ha ha, yes! Caldera would be great, since it's within walking distance of my house. However, they do have limited hours, compared to other places. Sunday is noon-10, Monday through Thursday is 5-11pm. They don't do the reserved upstairs space on Friday, it looks like.

And, uh, Thursdays don't work for me.
posted by redsparkler at 10:30 PM on February 7, 2011

Caldera is within walking distance of my house as well, are you my neighborhood?

Actually, if we did a sunday afternoon thing at Caldera it may work fine, as most folks would probably want to call it a night before 10pm anyway, and we could meet there at 6ish.
posted by mrzarquon at 7:56 AM on February 8, 2011

I like the Caldera suggestion as well, and Sunday afternoon works for me.

In the meantime, however, to go ahead and get things kicked off, I vote for committing to this Thursday at Cascade (Buckman Village Brewing, according to Google Maps?) at 9pm.

posted by cgc373 at 7:51 AM on February 9, 2011

I believe we've settled on Thursday the 10th for our first night, at 9pm at the pub across the street from Green Dragon - it's either called Cascade or Buckman Village Brewing, depending on who you ask.

It's obvious that sticking to any one weekday would prevent some people from being able to attend no matter what day we picked, so we'll have to figure out a way to shift it around without confusing the sheer hell out of everyone. But yeah, Thursday the 10th this time.
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:29 AM on February 9, 2011

Actually, Buckman Village Brewing is across 9th street from Green Dragon.
Cascade is on Belmont.

I had to clarify this for myself, so I figured I'd pass on the info to avoid any confusion.

Yes, although I have only ever played the "arcade" versions on Xbox and iPhone.

No, it's at Cascade. Buckman Village is just a brewery, not a pub, sharing a building and some space with the Green Dragon and good old Integrity Spirits.

Cascade Brewing Barrel House is one block north of that building, with the entrance facing south on 10th and Belmont.

Google doesn't explicitly label Cascade on their map, and the Street View is out of date, but it's on the same block as, and directly south of Gretchen's Kitchen. It looks like this.

Also, there's a chance I might not make it, I'll try, though.
