Sun December 13 at 2:00 PM, Southern Pacific Brewing
620 Treat Ave, San Francisco, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
Hello, Bay Area! Let's hang out at Southern Pacific Brewing on Sunday afternoon, the 13th, starting at 2!
The wife and I are gonna be in town from Sunday 12/13 through Thursday 12/17 for a conference she's attending, and crashing with rtha and gingerbeer, and a meetup Sunday afternoon seems like a good bet.

We could also do other evenings if Sunday's somehow a disaster, or if one just isn't enough.

Also, I'll be bumming around town for the next few days while Sec is getting her science on, so there's potential for additional hangouts and lunchings and so on if folks are interested.

There's nothing in my disaster calendar for Sunday ... in fact the whole calendar just kind of stops on Thursday. Oh well, I'm sure Sunday will be great!

I love Virgil's and am delighted that they have become a mefite meetup standard. However, I also acknowledge that it is best for large groups when we can hang out outside. We've also done a meetup at Southern Pacific, which has a larger indoor space if we think we're getting lots of people.

If "afternoon" is a legitimate option, as opposed to "evening", it would be more better for those of us in the hinterlands who would like to attend.

(But plans don't need to be changed based on the needs of the hinterlands minority, so if it ends up being an evening, okay!)

Hah! I ran into rtha recently, and we talked about how we should get in a Mefi meetup before the holidays kick in with *shudder* Family Time. This should do nicely!

I could be game for meeting folks! Unless I've revealed too many of my embarrassing secrets on this site to show my face. Could I bring my partner? She's very nice.

I'm also in the hinterlands (well, the East Bay), so I can't be out late. Also, there's a chance that we may have a commitment on this side of the Bay. So... I can't say yes just yet, but I'd like to go to this if we can make it.

I'm busy Sunday afternoon (ira glass! dancing!), but would be up for a beer another evening. Would be super fun to meet the chief donut eater!

Having recently left my old job, I now have Sundays free! I will come.
posted by Noms_Tiem at 12:29 AM on December 10, 2015

Oh yes, besides Sunday, I think I'll actually be free most other evenings after work (although I can't be out late because of the BART schedule).

I just moved to the city, was hoping to look into mefi meetups as it's been a long, so this makes me happy. Virgil's is literally around the corner, two buildings over from me, but if the patio is the draw, it's supposed to be rainy. Better to save it for fairer seas and skies.

Southern Pacific looks ok.

Aw, this sounds like a heck of a meetup to try and make it to but this is a Bad Time for PBO. I will send my regrets instead (they will be the chitinous, rugose abominations scuttling around under your table).

Unfortunately, I'm in a show down in Redwood City that is closing that day with a matinee, so I'll miss any Sunday afternoon festivities.

aw man I would really like to come but it sort of depends on how The Paper That Is Ruining My Life is going.

I think I can come and I'd love to see everyone! Are we supposed to bring an offering? Beans perhaps? Bunny head pancakes?

Ok, looks like due to weather maybe we should aim for the larger space at Southern Pacific. Also, if anyone is attending AGU that week, I'd love to hear about it- that's what I'm in town for!
posted by Secretariat at 11:59 AM on December 10, 2015

I might be able to make it. I hope I can make it. But it depends on some complicated timing so I won't know till the last minute.

Yeah, I think the main plan here is shaping up as Southern Pacific at 2pm on Sunday; for folks who are more into evening, I am willing to be we'll still be going for a while, and if it turns into a "crowd got smaller, let's change venues" thing we can update the thread on the fly there. I'll go ahead and update this to confirmed with those details today.

Also, Sunday's-no-good folks, I'd be happy to plan a second meetup and/or try to arrange random grab-a-lunch-or-beer stuff throughout the next few days as well. Would be great to be able to meet folks if we can make it work.

2pm is fantastic for me! Looking forward to it. I might wear a name label because I find that helps - do people want name labels or is that too nerdy?

If anyone is coming from the East Bay I'd love to hitch a ride otherwise I'll take BART (you're welcome to join me if you're from Walnut Creek/surrounding area).

Just looking at the hours/location section: "21 Beers on tap..." OH YEAH.

They must do beer sample flights, right?

My brother and his girlfriend are in town for the conference (she's the geologist). Probably not appropriate to say any more about them here but if all of us are free Sunday we might get to the meetup.

Heads up: Southern Pacific will also be hosting Handel’s Sing It Yourself Messiah: The Pub Crawl from 6 to 8.

That sounds horrible. Great, but horrible.

Heh. Four hours seems like just about the right amount of time to be prepared to make a tactical fight-or-flight decision when that comes down the pipe. We'll either embrace the rowdy Handel crowd or run screaming to another venue.

The rain has stopped and the sun is out! For now at least, but beware possible flooding in the Folsom/17th St area if you come that way.

Crap. I woke up today with a nasty a cough and it's probably not a good idea for me to be out in the world. I wish I could make it! Have fun!

For those interested: There is a facsimile of the Dublin autograph score of Messiah (#296169). This is a bit of a dead end, though, as no instrumentation is listed (or at least I haven't seen any in the skimming I've done). (Some of the other scores at IMSLP are more readable, such as #47305, though they I haven't seen them call out total number of players either).

Wikipedia says "The 1754 performance at the hospital is the first for which full details of the orchestral and vocal forces survive. The orchestra included fifteen violins, five violas, three cellos, two double-basses, four bassoons, four oboes, two trumpets, two horns and drums."

This is 37 people plus percussion and singers, which is more or less what showed up at Southern Pacific last night, so I was quite mistaken.

As suggested, I must have been thinking of or confused by later performance practice, that often included much larger forces.
