Sat June 6 at 7:00 PM, Frjtz
590 Valencia Street, San Francisco, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
It's been too long since a Frjtz meetup, and alexordave and I will be in SF bay area (and beyond) from June 5th – 17th. What say we meet on the eve of the 6th, 7pm onward?
We're open to other events — especially involving food — any other days too!

Whee! I'll be visiting for Cultivating Ensembles in STEM Education and Research (I'm on the organizing committee; you should come) which is June 10-12, so I'll likely be in the Area by the 8th and maybe even earlier!

I have been tagged for this elsewhere, but I don't live in San Francisco anymore! I moved to Atlanta.

I'm a very quiet Mefite but I'm going to be in SF (visiting from the UK) from 7th-16th and was thinking about posting a meetup, and that overlaps pretty nicely with your dates if you'd be happy to move it a bit later in that time period?

I'm going to be biking to LA (for AIDS/Lifecycle!) that week but would be happy to join a meetup the next weekend!

It's been almost two weeks since our last meetup there, and I'm starting to get hungry again, so I'm in!

Yes, this is great! I like that this is coming together, and perhaps more things in the works. Maybe someone can start another meetup thread for more fun the following week/end? We'll be down in LA from the 9th -14th, but could do something again 15th or 16th. Feel free to plan things without us too though, no worries.

By popular demand—

Soft Ginger Cookies
Time: 45 minutes
Makes: 2 dozen
  • 2 ¼ cup all purpose flour
  • 2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • ½ tsp ground cloves
  • ¼ tsp sea salt
  • ¾ cup butter (softened or melted)
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 tbsp water (room temperature)
  • ¼ cup (= 4 tbsp) molasses
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (or as needed) - retain
  1. Preheat oven to 350° F (175° C).
  2. Add dry ingredients (flour, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, baking soda, cloves, salt) to a medium bowl and stir gently to combine. Set aside.
  3. In a large mixing bowl, cream together butter and 1 cup sugar.
  4. Add the egg to the butter mixture and beat thoroughly.
  5. Add the water and molasses to the butter mixture and stir until smooth.
  6. Gradually add the combined dry ingredients into the wet, stirring constantly. My stand mixer saves my arm from falling off by now.
  7. Roll batter by the spoonful into balls between your hands and dredge (cover) in retained sugar. Place on ungreased cookie sheets by the dozen, allowing room to spread.
  8. Bake for 8 to 11 minutes in preheated oven. At the low end of the time scale cookies should look finished around the edges and somewhat moist on top, and if removed from the oven will fall in the center and develop a cracked surface and be slightly moist and chewy. At the high end cookies will look consistently cooked all over, and will have a slight crispness around the edge and be soft and fluffy through the center.
  9. Allow cookies to cool for five minutes on baking sheets before removing to a wire rack.
Stores well in an airtight container, if any even make it to see tomorrow.
