I still have too much ice cream in my freezer for another ice cream meetup, but a non-ice cream one works for me.

I am totally down for this. I'm in town the 19th through the end of November and I haven't yet put together my December time yet, but it's looking pretty flexible but I'll likely be there from the 17th through the end of the year. Very likely the weekend of the 10th as well.

Taya and I loved meeting so many of you at the Magic Castle meetup and can't wait to hang out again.

We bought an ice cream maker just for the purpose of participating in the Barnsdall park event, but didn't make it. We'd be bringing vegan ice cream, fyi.

But we also drink. So we're down for either type.

I just came here looking for an LA meetup. I'm open to any type of meetup, particularly if it involves food. I don't really have ideas about where it should be but if I think of something I'll chime in.

Oh, and I just posted this for this Saturday. It's too short notice for a full on MeFi Meetup, but if anyone is interested in beer and awesome vegan food, we'd love to see your faces.

I'm feeling all nostalgic about that Ethiopian place we met-up at eons ago. But I also haven't eaten Ethiopian food since then, so it could just be that I have what they call a "hankering" in the old country (Oklahoma).

No way. It's too soon for another meet-up, and I'm not going.

Well, someone's feeling his oats.

Meetup at carsonb's!!!!

This wouldn't so much be a meetup, but does anyone want to check out the cyclocross race in Griffith Park on Saturday? MeFi sponsors a rider in it.
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 12:53 AM on November 5, 2010

Er, I guess the elite races are in the afternoon on both Saturday and Sunday.

I'm totally down for a meetup! Maybe the next one should be on the west side, since it looks like the last few were in Hollywood? Unless more people from the eastside plan to attend.
posted by estherbester at 5:09 PM on November 5, 2010

Messob is a good compromise between eastside/westside peeps. I'd be down for some more Ethiopian cuisine—haven't had any since that very first meetup I attended three years ago. And they seemed to be able to accommodate groups well.

I *love* Ethiopian food, but I've got to put a vote in for Merkato. Best kitfo I've ever had.
posted by Space Kitty at 10:46 PM on November 5, 2010

Wherever we ate last time sorta had wee tables, so I vote for one with tables that can accomodate us. But yes to Little Ethiopia!
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 11:12 PM on November 5, 2010

I also vote yes to Little Ethiopia and not-so-little tables!
posted by katillathehun at 10:16 AM on November 6, 2010

Hell yes, especially if it involves Ethiopian food. I'll be out of town from the 23rd-29th, before or after that should work for me. Before = better.

Messob is the place that I am told has the best food in Los Angeles.

If we're aiming for a pre-Thanksgiving meetup, it looks like we have a short window between the Nov 19 -- Nov 23. The 20th is a Saturday -- maybe we could have a Little Ethiopian lunchtime meetup then, at whichever place has the best food and/or not-tiny tables?
posted by estherbester at 5:20 PM on November 8, 2010

in any case, someone should promote this as an actual meetup soon...

Sundays would be better for me for lunch. Dinner Saturday is do-able.
posted by carsonb at 10:34 AM on November 9, 2010

Saturday nights are my preference as daytimes are my Get Stuff Done times, but I suppose I could switch that around if coerced.
posted by katillathehun at 10:59 AM on November 9, 2010

Heh - I know I suggested Saturday, but Sunday would actually work better for me too. How does one turn a proposed meetup into an actual meetup?
posted by estherbester at 10:25 AM on November 10, 2010

Oh hey, I think I gotta do that. Preferred time/restaurant? So far we have: Sunday November 21s at...

Messob is awesome, but I vote for Merkato if they have more group-friendly tables. And if Space Kitty says their kitfo is the best, then by Emperor Haile Selassie I, their kitfo is the best!

I shouldn't be embarassed to admit this, but I don't believe I've ever had Ethiopian food! How lame! Lunch on the early side would be awesome for my first time!
posted by buzzkillington at 6:16 PM on November 10, 2010

Merkato also has dried beef fitfit( meat, sauce and ripped-up injera {sourdough pancake bread})

I was the one who called the Messob meetup; Merkato is my other favorite on Fairfax.

Wish I could be there!

Ok, Merkato it is! Is 1pm ok?

I like the cut of 1pm's jib.

Well, we had an awesome meetup. Attending: Estherbester, Carsonb, Katillathehun, Mandymanwasregistered, Ocherdraco (& her SO whose username escapes me, but real name does not) as well as a late appearance by DaShiv.

I lurv you guysgirls, it was a lot of fun and three of us had Ethiopian food for the first time (I was among the three).

Katilla took pics, maybe she'll post them.

Still full. Had a blast and really enjoyed meeting Ocherdraco and (The Rt Hon.) MP, who dropped by after a few good answers were posted over in AskMe.

I could live off injera, it's like sourdough bread that doesn't cut the roof of your mouth.
posted by carsonb at 6:51 PM on November 21, 2010

Yes, it was lovely to share such a great meal with everyone who made it out. A big thanks to mandymanwasregistered for calling this meetup!

That was also my first time having Ethiopian food -- but our server was super helpful (or somewhat tyrannical, depending out how you look at it) as we made our selections. My mouth still kind of feels like it's on fire, although that's mainly because I'm eating my leftover spicy lentils right now =)

Nice to see you all today!

It was lovely to see you all and, in some cases, to meet you! I did take photos, but all of them are either horrifically blurry or unfortunately timed. Some are both, which makes it look like y'all are ravenous speed zombies. Brains and injera aren't that different, after all.

Thanks for the great welcome to LA! The MP and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
