15th anniversary in the GTA

Sat July 19 at 8:00 PM, Jason George
100 Front Street East, Toronto, ON M5A 1E1, Canada (Map & Directions)
The venue has changed! We are now meeting at the Jason George on Front St.

So hey, Metafilter turns 15 in July and we should take this excuse to get together on a patio somewhere and drink and eat food, especially since our last meetup was in March. We're going to meet at 8 PM at the Jason George on July 19th. Join us!

I could do the 19th.

19th is better for me as well.

I think I can do the 19th as well.

The 19th works for me.

I'm in like Flynn for the 19th!
Good initiative Phire, thank you.
Other cities put us to shame... Toronto we gotta do better!

I'm interested to hear more.

One more vote for the 19th. Would be nice to see everyone again.

Hey, I might be in Toronto from the 10th to the 14th, any chance of doing it on the 12th? I promise to wear pants and act mostly civil.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 5:28 AM on June 27, 2014 [1 favorite]

Or even the 11th if that would work for people occupied on the 12th?
posted by gman at 5:41 AM on June 27, 2014

Any night except the 6th works for me. I happen to live near the Jason George which has a great patio.

I am still new-ish to mefi and have never been to a meetup but I suppose the 15th anniversary might be a good time to start. But is anyone else going to be a newbie or will you guys all know each other already?
posted by mr. manager at 7:17 AM on June 27, 2014

There's always a mix of people at meetups, some who know each other fairly well and some people that are meeting for the first time. No need to worry that we'll all be sitting around talking about stuff that happened at the last meetup.

(Though, if Maudlin shows up, I imagine there will be at least some discussion of how things went, when she had her stitches out, etc.)

(Stitches resulting from a Metafilter meetup are atypical and not to be expected.)

mr. manager: We just say "Manager." And the first meet-up I ever went to was the 10th anniversary meetup! It was a pretty big group that time and everyone was extremely friendly and no one was in a clique or anything. You should go. :)
posted by cranberrymonger at 8:39 AM on June 27, 2014 [1 favorite]

I can make either the 12th or the 19th (though the 12th is still the Fringe Festival), and so can the fiance. He and MeFi share a birthday, so this will be especially fun!
posted by ilana at 8:53 AM on June 27, 2014

I've moved to the city and meant to organize a meetup when I came, but then my anxiety got the best of me. I'm in for either!

And Mr. Manager, I've been to exactly one meetup in late 2012, and everyone was delightful and welcoming. Don't think twice about it.

I make it a point to be a jerk to anyone I don't know.

You know, there's no reason we can't have two meetups, one on the 19th for the anniversary and one for Brandon when he comes to Toronto. (The 11th would work better for me personally.) Does that work?
posted by Phire at 10:32 AM on June 27, 2014 [2 favorites]

I've only ever been to one meetup and I've never managed to get to a second one. Surely to heaven if two are being planned I could make it to one or the other. Brandon, are you actually for sure coming to Toronto or is this still at the "maybe could be " stage?
posted by ThatCanadianGirl at 5:49 PM on June 27, 2014

I can do the 11th too I am pretty sure.
posted by chunking express at 6:28 PM on June 27, 2014

I pretty sure if there's a meet up on 11 or 12th I could be there. The 19th is almost certainly out of the question for me.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 8:32 PM on June 27, 2014

Naturally, after having written the above, it looks like plans fell through, so carry on without me.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 8:27 AM on June 28, 2014

Dang, I literally signed onto MeFi just now so I could post another meetup for you, Brandon. You sure you can't swing it?
posted by Phire at 8:45 AM on June 28, 2014

Pretty sure, let's just kill it for now.
posted by Brandon Blatcher at 1:50 PM on June 28, 2014

Dude, I was just joking, I won't be a jerk to you.
posted by chunking express at 3:15 PM on June 28, 2014 [1 favorite]

To be fair, chunking express is well known for his intimidating stature.

Since July 19th seems like it works for most people, let's do that weekend. Jason George was floated as an idea for a venue; I also rather like the Amsterdam Brewhouse by the waterfront (plus they are gigantic). Does anyone have any preferences or other suggestions?
posted by Phire at 4:06 PM on June 28, 2014 [2 favorites]

Well I can't make any of the dates mentioned. Therefore you are all jerks, including and particularly chunking express.
posted by Brockles at 5:09 PM on June 28, 2014 [1 favorite]

Google maps tells me that either of the suggested venues are about 10 minutes from my house. Therefore, I'm in.
posted by ThatCanadianGirl at 6:17 PM on June 28, 2014

I would vote for the Brewhouse if only for their delicious beer (Why yes, I did move 5 minutes away from their retail location and know everyone there by sight already), but am good with whatever.
posted by Lemurrhea at 6:28 PM on June 28, 2014

Yeah both are fine with me. I have a slight preference to the Jason George but I'd go to either.
posted by cranberrymonger at 6:30 PM on June 28, 2014

I haven't been to the new Amsterdamn place, and I like their beer. I am easy if people like her other place more.
posted by chunking express at 6:50 PM on June 29, 2014

I'm inclined to push for the Amsterdam in case we get a large turnout, since the Jason George looks smallish and we'd probably wind up taking over their patio. Would people be okay with that? Next meetup at the Jason George?
posted by Phire at 7:55 AM on June 30, 2014 [1 favorite]

So only one meetup? On the 19th? At Amsterdam?

Awesome, I've changed the event to confirmed with the date and venue listed. If people could update whether or not they can make it in the sidebar, I'll try to call in a reservation closer to the date.

Excite!

If anyone gets nervous about going to the meetup, just pipe up in the thread. I am willing to cajole, encourage, or even show up at your doorstep and drag you out by your hair. In a nice way.

I am out of town the weekend of the 19th! Booooo! It's ok tho cause you guys are great and you'll have lots of fun anyway!

nobeagle and I would really like to come! Are any of you available to babysit for us that night? Oh. Wait. Sigh.
posted by VioletU at 4:09 PM on July 10, 2014

The 15th anniversary seems like as good an occasion as any for my first MeFi meetup. Having talked myself out of coming out before, though, I wouldn't be averse to a bit of cajoling.

Quick reminder that the meetup is this Saturday, and it shall be awesome! Can I get people to update their RSVP status if it has changed in the past few weeks, so I have a more accurate idea of headcount before I call the Brewhouse? Thaaaank you.

Sorry, Phire, but finances do not permit. And before anyone says it, I have enough debt sitting on my shoulders (both financial and social) to want to add any more.

Will try to make it to the next TO meetup if possible.

Have fun everybunny! Happy Birthday cat-scan.com MeFi!

Argh. I am flying out of the island airport that afternoon. My regards to you all.

Update! So apparently all of Toronto wants to drink at the Amsterdam Brewhouse. Which I guess is not entirely surprising. They absolutely would not make a reservation (I even tried cajoling their events coordinator), and told me that we'd be waiting a pretty long time to be seated even if I showed up early and put my name down on a waiting list.

So I made a reservation for 20 people at the Jason George for 8 PM instead - ask for Jenny. They're happy to do separate checks and it sounds like they're fine with flexible numbers if (hint hint) some of our Maybes join us.

Super grateful to feckless fecal fear mongering for having recommended this place earlier so I had a back-up I could call instead of running around like a headless chicken :) Happy to buy you a drink at the next meetup!

See you all Saturday!

Here's the posting for the board game meetup if people want to chime in on that. Let's make this thing happen!
