A Book Swap. For swapping books.
posted October 13, 2013 12:10 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sun November 24 at 4:00 PM, Tchad's Workroom
4403 North Sheridan Road, Chicago, IL, USA (Map & Directions)
What say we have a bookswap-type meet-up? Bring a few good books you're willing to part with, and maybe take some new ones home. Like a clothing swap, but with fewer reasons to undress and, hopefully, no embarrassing stains to explain.
We are not locked in, by any means, but let's say Sunday Nov. 24th for now... Any objections/well reasoned requests to change?

oooooo! I endorse this idea. I could possibly host, too, maybe. Possibly. Maybe

I approve/endorse/applaud this proposal!

I like this idea, and I want crush to make us cocktails.

If it helps, we can have it at my workrooms in Uptown like we did last time. I've got tons of tables to sort and stack the books and if you wanted to turn it into a potluck/cocktail/coffee/whatever party I've got the plates/glasses/countertops for that as well.

If you are looking at January, Fridays would be good. I'd even be willing to take the leftovers to the same charity - Books For Women In Prison.

The last one was really good. It was neat to see what everyone brought.

Great idea!! I was just talking about how I need to get rid of some books.

OOoo. I say we take Tchad up on his offer. I can bring a cocktail kit with me.

Yes yes yes yes yes.

I'm going to feel bad when the books I take from you guys have sat unread on my shelf for a year, but that's not going to stop me from swapping books with you.

How about November 24th? 4pm start. At Tchad's studio in Uptown? Does that suit all interested parties?
Iridic has also suggested Open Books as another potential charity recipient.
I await your consensus.

Damn. I just got rid of the last of my to-get-rid-of books last week.

I we are good for the 24th, I'd be more than happy to make sure everything is ready up here.

Is it for-sure a go?

I'm really excited about this!
posted by Tchad at 8:45 AM on November 1, 2013

I'd say we're for-sure ready if you are, Tchad... I am amassing a small pile, already.
Also, as people shift from the maybe list, we can better plan our potluckery.

I'm Just finishing up the tile on the countertop in the kitchenette off of the office, so the place will be in really good form by the 24th!

As far as the date goes, I have no problem setting everything up for the 23rd as well as the 24th. That way it opens up a lot of scheduling options over the weekend.

I will leave it to all of you the logistics of the schedule. Suffice it to say that I am here all day all weekend, so anytime after 6 a.m. and before midnight is fine that weekend.

Yay!

Good to know. As we're self-catering an accurate head-count will be very nice. Crush, can I bring you some room-temperature La Croix? Truffles for all?

Photos of the books this time, plz!

I have been MIA for a while, but am really sorry to be missing this, as I so enjoyed the last one (and still feel guilty about all the great books I snagged!). However, if you're in the neighborhood, I'd encourage you to swing by an event I'm coorganizing, the Chicago Book Expo, at 1345 W. Argyle in Uptown (local presses and local authors speaking about and selling their books).

I'll be bringing a fancy non-alcoholic beverage, and maybe some very spicy cookies.
posted by hydrophonic at 10:38 AM on November 16, 2013

I'll be bringing some alcoholic chocolate... are there any issues with nuts?
posted by Cold Lurkey at 9:43 AM on November 17, 2013

I have neither issues with nuts, nor spicy cookies. I was thinking I could either do a choose-your-own Campari cocktail spread (negroni, agavone, old pal and sparkling) or I could do a one-size-fits-all. Possibly the Autumn Leaves, which contrary to what you might read on the internet, is rye and applejack brandy with some additional flavors--quite tasty.

We did have a whiskey drink recently, with a coffee-honey syrup. I can replicate that one.

Thoughts?

I should bring my Chex Mix. Everyone loves Chex Mix.

and if you don't, tough. You get Chex Mix.

I'm just going to bring a big sack of Brazil nuts, still in their shells. I will also have a very capable nutcracker with me, but I won't share it with anyone, if that's cool.
posted by Iridic at 3:07 PM on November 18, 2013

But really, I was thinking cookies. Date-oatmeal, perhaps.
posted by Iridic at 3:09 PM on November 18, 2013

Switching to a "no" because I didn't realize we settled on a time so late in the day. The 24th is my birthday, and I've got some pretty epic plans for the evening.
posted by booknerd at 8:21 AM on November 19, 2013 [1 favorite]

I totally have swap-worthy books to get rid of! Unfortunately I have a family obligation directly before this which may run late. Does anyone have a rough estimate of how long this will go on for?

If I can come, I will bring an as-yet-undetermined food thing.

I'll be going to Cleveland for a funeral soon, so it's very likely I'll have miss this.

I just got back into town, but wanted to check in and say that everything is almost ready for you guys!

If any of you are bringing stuff besides books, here is a list of the basics I have on hand:

  • Crock Pot
  • 2 Small espresso machines
  • Cutlery
  • China (Plates, bowls, & c.)
  • Glassware
  • Small toaster oven
  • 2 (very) small refrigerators
  • 2 Bottles of art-gallery opening quality red & white wine (read: it costs $3 a bottle)
  • Some basic black tea
  • Some green and/or other teas
  • Some instant coffee
  • A small toaster oven

I just thought I'd mention what was up here so you can plan accordingly.

If anybody needs anything, just let me know and we will get you situated!

    Tchaad, you're awesome.
No Book Swap would be complete without a toaster oven.

In case any of you book lovers are in the neighborhood a bit early before this, check out the Chicago Book Expo.

    I'm getting ready for everybody.

There will be a sign on the door with a number to call so you can get into the building.

It is on the NE corner of the intersection of Sheridan & Montrose.

I'll turn my phone on about 3 p.m. for the early birds.

If a scraggly guy (or guys) ask you if you want to see Tchad, or if you are here for sewing, don't worry - it is the maintenance man (or men). They watch out for "my folks" and let them in when they see them. If they let you in, there are signs up in the hallway.

And that's about it! Do we have an end-time set? It doesn't really matter to me, but I tend to turn my phone off when I don't need it when I'm out of class/work season.

Never having swapped before, I have no concept of how long we'll be... 7 at the latest?

Any chance someone can grab a bag of ice? I don't think i can carry anything else.

I was already going to pop in to the Jewels across the way, so i'll get some.

I am also stopping by the Jewel because my cheese puffs were a flop. If anything else needs purchased, let me know. Also I can get ice.

Do you guys want chips and guacamole? Because I am probably going to bring chips and guac, and am on my way to the store (and then will head to the swap).

Sure! We've got a good crowd started, so feel free to bring anything you'd like!

Do you remember that movie where those guys were trucking nitroglycerin over the Andes and they had to drive super carefully lest they blow up? I think my Red Line train must have a carload of nitro hooked up.

Either I'll be there by five or you'll hear a BOOM toward the south.

    one heartfelt personal connection.
    extensive personal contribution.

It's in pounds AND metric measures -- so your estimations, as exaggerated as they may have been, are all the same to me.

    Holy shit those shoes.

And I don't think I could pull off any of these looks but sigh.

I think we have a rule in our house that if we ever want to actually visit the UK, we need to stop ordering things from there.

(We don't have that rule officially, but I think I'm going to have to make it. Because I really don't need a Dashing Tweeds windbreaker. But yet...)
