Horace Rumpole on You're The Expert

Sat October 19 at 7:00 PM, Boston Common Hancock
40 Trinity Place, Boston, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
You're the Expert, a funny science podcast and future radio show, will feature not one but two Mefites at the Boston Book Festival!
YTE has been posted here before, but never before with a mefite as the Expert. That's right, Metafilter's Own Horace Rumpole will be interviewed. He's a rare book librarian, and since this is the Boston Book Festival I can only assume he'll be talking about X-ray crystallography with host Chris Duffy and comedians Myq Kaplan, Brendan Pelsue, and Robert Woo.

You can buy tickets here.

Put me down as a maybe. I'll confirm as we get closer.

Hey neat. Myq Kaplan is also sort of a MeFite.

...comedians Myq Kaplan, Brendan Pelsue, and Robert Woo will try to get to the bottom of what John Overholt, Harvard’s Curator of Early Modern Books and Manuscripts, does all day.

Sometimes it involves showing people his Johnson.

I have it on good authority that Horace Rumpole is also appearing in another event related to his job expertise soon. I wonder if I can post that one as a meetup, too...

The Museums Showoff? Sure, I don't see why not, although my talk will only be 9 minutes. Are you coming?

I'm hoping to! I think that MeFites (in general) would enjoy it, anyway.

I like the sound of it. You should post it.

Well, it's happening tonight at 6, so it's probably a little late at this point.

Oy, that scared me. I was worried I would miss *this* meetup.

So are folks buying their own tickets? Or should we get a table?
posted by maryr at 1:29 PM on September 25, 2013

It's not at the Oberon, so my expectation is that it's going to be theater seating rather than tables. It doesn't look like you're selecting assigned seating on the Vendini page, in any event.

I totally nailed it at the Museums Showoff, by the way, if I do say so myself.

Love to come, but we're out of town that weekend.

I just bought my tickets. I wasn't asked to choose seats.

Bought tickets just now. See you all there!

Yessssss! That joke never gets old!

That joke would have made Johnson wince, at the very least, which makes me like it even more.

Just bought my ticket.

My past experience with the BBF is that by 4:00 I'm pretty tired and thinking about food. Is anyone interested in making reservations (or more informally just declaring a location) to get together for dinner/drinks before the show? (I'm pretty sure the location is auditorium seating too.)

I'd guess that Copley would be a bit crowded, and South End/Columbus/Tremont is easy walking distance and should have some nice sandwich shop kind of place, but I don't really know anywhere in particular there. Suggestions?

Do we have a meeting spot selected? Maybe somewhere in the lobby at 6:30? I'm not familiar with the theatre, so I'm not sure where is good.

Also, I'm guessing it is now too late to arrange dinner before the show, but would anyone like to get food and/or drink afterward? We could work that out in person.

Sorry I can't make it to this. Good luck, Horace!

The show is in a ballroom at the Boston Common Hotel & Conference Center (note: in Copley, nowhere near Boston Common) on the second floor in the Hancock Room. There's another event in there until 6:15, but I presume there will be a hallway outside for people to meet in conveniently.

Kris and I would be happy to meet for dinner and drinks afterward. We can presumably gather up at the front after the show.

I'd be interested in trying out The Salty Pig, which does charcuterie and pizzas, plus cocktails and beer, and should be a short walk from the venue. Anybody have thoughts or other suggestions?
posted by Horace Rumpole at 12:38 PM on October 19, 2013

I had lunch at the Salty Pig once, and it was very good.
(Will try to make it tonite, will look for folks outside). Good luck Horace!

I just made shortbread cookies, so if they taste OK, I'll bring a few to snack on before/during the show. This is my attempt to bribe someone into sitting with me. Hee.

We got here early since John/Horace is in the show. Still not entirely clear when I will be able to get into the room, but if possible I will try to save a couple of seats for Mefites.
posted by DiscourseMarker at 3:19 PM on October 19, 2013

I posted that and then we went in. So I am in the front row, right side, and am saving 3 seats right now for whoever gets here first.
posted by DiscourseMarker at 3:22 PM on October 19, 2013

Well I did not get my act together to buy tix ahead of time, so here's hoping there is still space.
posted by maryrussell at 3:24 PM on October 19, 2013

They are still selling tickets at the moment. We're in the front on the right.
