Fancy a drink, New York?

Fri July 26 at 7:00 PM, Keg & Lantern
97 Nassau Avenue, Brooklyn, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
I'll be in Brooklyn on the week beginning 22 July and I wonder if any of you fine folks would care for a meet-up over a drink or two? ... Now confirmed for Friday 26 July at Keg & Lantern, 97 Nassau Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11222 at 7pm but you can come at 8 or whatever. Also confirmed!: this meetup is officially named Colin.
I'd love to say hello to (and have a drink with) some MeFites while in town. I'm quite easy on locations (e.g. Manhattan is fine) and beverages, but apologies in advance that I am giving schoolnights as options. Feel free to set me a long and intricate series of tasks and/or riddles in order to determine if I may cause you acute tedium, or simply because you like pretending you are Tim the Enchanter from Monty Python's Holy Grail, e.g.

"If a meet-up thee wish to see
Answer these riddles forty-three
But make thy answers not too slow!
For the pass rate is actually extremely low"

I am picturing you as a gnarled, old wizard guarding a rope-bridge, but one that is bound to administer standardised tests, despite your lack of faith in the Government's "No Adventurer Left Behind" policy.

Oh no! I'm going to miss the Quidnunc Kid! (I'll be in Ocean City that week, inconveniently far away.)
posted by Rory Marinich at 7:38 PM on July 8, 2013

I'm sorry to miss you, Rory; and I'm sorry I'm in the wrong town and country for you, Captain.

Also it now occurs to me that a proposed meet-up with a total stranger without a venue, time or date is unlikely to get many responses. What I might end up doing is comment my location every two hours and see if anyone from MetaFilter just happens to be in the same pub or bar.

Actually I might just get a metafilter t-shirt and hang around Times Square handing out vote #1 quidnunc kid flyers.

I vote for the 26th because I can make it that day. Also I really really would like to buy you a drink.

But mostly Brooklyn meetups are on Wednesday so you could just pass out and wake up one at the 4th ave pub without any further effort.

Potomac A, young rope-rider - I dig you both, with a warm-and-tingly yet morally wholesome diggishness. Let's shoot for 26th July. Suggestions for a pleasant watering-hole near you gratefully accepted!

I'll be staying in downtown Brooklyn and also in Williamsburg, largely depending on how drunk I am when it is time to go to sleep. But I am happy to come to a location decided on strict democratic principles or utter whim.

This is because I understand that New Yorkers have access to a delightful subterranean contraption that allows them to move at great speed through the very soil and rock itself, and to emerge in any of diverse locations far from their point of origin. I call this the TRANS-CTHONIC VELOCITATION CONTRIVANCE. I yearn to insert myself into its mechanoid grasp and let it scuttle me to and fro.

If yer in Williamsburg then everything along the L is close to you, may I suggest RADIO BAR Aka my platonic ideal bar?
posted by The Whelk at 7:42 AM on July 11, 2013

You may! And I would love to have the opportunity to meet and pay my sincere respects to you, The Whelk (or Whelk, if I may). That feeling also applies to grobstein, unannihilated, Jahaza, Salamandrous, Eideteker and EmpressCallipygos in no particular order, in addition to the young rope-rider, Potomac Avenue, and pretty much anyone else who wanders by.

However: I beg you locals to opine on your favoured location, as I would be happy to meet any of you anywhere, but for youse guys there may be various areas that you are:

(i) too far away from;
(ii) allergic to;
(iii) unable to get to;
(iv) unable to get out of;
(v) subject to OFAC sanctions in; or
(vi) advised by your astrological advisers not to tarry in.

Well, hell, if you're in Brooklyn and you want ideas for Brooklyn places and people can talk about them, then I'm gonna make a pitch for Putnam's because it has cask beer and fabulous food and it is one block from my house which I realize benefits no one but me but it's still a good place.

Is this a right after work event? If so, I vote for a place that has food. Actually, no matter what time this is happening I vote for a place that has food.

I like the 4th Ave Pub, it is solid and convenient

The 4th Avenue Pub of 76 4th Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11217, United States of America? DONE.

Is this a right after work event? If so, I vote for a place that has food. Actually, no matter what time this is happening I vote for a place that has food.

I am on hols, so happy to meet whenever is convenient to y'all (or, I'm happy to try to grab a beer garden space early and wait for whoever). So, say what's good for you. This 4th Avenue, does it do food apart from popcorn?

*GOOGLES*

Hmmm. I see. OK ... well, popcorn is technically a food. Exploded food. Do you want some kind of non-exploded food? Because non-exploded food is, in my opinion, just food that hasn't exploded yet. So you cannot trust that shit. And your safety at this meetup is my highest priority. On the other hand, maybe we can risk some place nearby which has pre-exploded food a.k.a., high-risk death-edibles. Tell me what makes sense, because as you can see I make absolutely no sense.
posted by the quidnunc kid at 11:29 AM on July 18, 2013

D'oh. Informing the out-of-towner fail. 4th Avenue Pub does NOT do food aside from popcorn, which is why I was chiming in that I wanted a place with food. I'd be up for trying Putnam's, mentioned above, though I'm really open to anything with both booze and food.
posted by unannihilated at 1:43 PM on July 18, 2013 [1 favorite]

Cool - my bad, unannihilated. A food option is a sensible idea - even if that food could explode at any second, showering us with condiments and various dips. I shall pack a sponge.
posted by the quidnunc kid at 2:30 PM on July 18, 2013

Putnam's does indeed have food, and the food is very, very good - mac-and-cheese with black truffle, burgers, oyster po-boys, a few healthy veggie things, the last time I was there I had some grilled shrimp with lime and pepper and a couple dipping sauces as bar food.... and about 5 cocktails, and then another 5 beer cocktails, alongside a full bar which includes a few different kinds of whiskey and a ton of beer and their own cask beer and I know the owners so maybe they'd come say hi and I swear I'm going to calm down it's just that I really like that place.

I will issue the caveat that getting there may require a few blocks' walk from whichever subway or bus conveyance you prefer. The nearest subway is the G train, but there's an A/C a few blocks beyond - and a bunch of buses, but for some reason buses scare people so I always feel like warning people about that. Although, there IS a Citibike stand right out front.

The place looks nice, but their food is insanely expensive. There is only one dinner under $20. More of a sit down dinner place type menu.
