IMPORTANT: The address given in the map (1 Journal Square Plaza, Jersey City, NJ 07306) is that of the nearest Path station - oh yeah! will give more walking directions in the thread.

Feel free to bring whatever beer or food strikes your fancy, but it's not required. Look forward to seeing you there!

I love Doctor Who, my fellow mefites, and have BBC America - but I am in Jersey City (only a few blocks walk from the Journal Square PATH station, but, I know that can seem very far away to Brooklynites.)

Yes, but you've made the trek all the way to our place! We've got to figure out if we have time to go to Jersey and back, but we'll let you know.

Getting from Manhattan to Jersey City is fairly quick from the WTC PATH station (10 minutes?). The trains are supposed to run every 15-20 minutes on the weekends, so, it's just the luck of the draw on wether you're stuck waiting for the train to arrive/leave the station.

The episode starts at 8pm; what time should we arrive?

I'm fine with people arriving anytime after 3pm (so I can get out to the grocery store & tidy up a bit in the morning), I have plenty of DVDs to watch while we're waiting.

I think I'm going to cook my modified 'tamale pie' recipe - the ingredients are: onion, green bell pepper, vegetable oil, ground meat, tomato sauce, tomato paste, frozen corn, Spanish olives, cumin, cocoa powder, allspice, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, Tabasco sauce, & yellow cornmeal. I assume there's some kind of vegan substitute for ground meat I can get at Trader Joe's or Whole Foods? (The 'pie' part of the recipe is because you're supposed to make a cornbread topping to bake over the mixture, but I'm generally too lazy for that step of the recipe and just buy some ready-made to serve on the side.) I pair it with white rice, so, it's not super-spicy.

I have no beer, just an odd assortment of liquors & fruit wines (including some Van Gogh vodka I got on a whim because of the 'Vincent & The Doctor' episode), so BYOB.

Sounds great!

One important heads up if you're aiming to make a vegan recipe: Worcestershire sauce is *usually* not vegan or vegetarian, as it has anchovies in it. That being said, there are some great vegan Worcestershire sauces you can buy - I know I've seen them at Whole Foods. For the vegan ground meat substitutes, you can definitely get those at Whole Foods or Trader Joe's - just check that the packaging explicitly says vegan, as some are just vegetarian (Morningstar products is a good example of this.) Thanks so much for a. cooking and b. trying to make something vegan!

We can definitely take care of the beer, and are happy to get a pizza or some such if more people show up.

I'll be there between seven and seven thirty, but Josh will be arriving earlier, between five and five thirty.

That was fun! Hope your trip home goes smoothly. Here is the full tamale pie recipe for posterity:

-For the beef mixture:
1 cup chopped onion
1 cup chopped green bell pepper
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 pound ground beef [or other ground/shredded meat or meat substitute]
an 8-ounce can of tomato sauce
2 tablespoons tomato paste
a 10-ounce package of frozen corn, thawed
1 cup sliced Spanish olives
1 tablespoon ground cumin
2 teaspoons unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon ground allspice
2 teaspoons chili powder
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 teaspoon Tabasco
1 tablespoon yellow cornmeal
-For the topping
1 cup all-purpose flour sifted with 1 cup yellow cornmeal, 3 tablespoons sugar, and 2 teaspoons double-acting baking powder
3 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted & cooled
3/4 cup milk
1 egg beaten lightly
1/2 cup grated sharp Cheddar
a 4-ounce can green chili peppers chopped

Cook the onion & green pepper in the oil until soft, add the beef and cook until the meat is browned. Add the tomato sauce, tomato paste, corn, olives, cumin, cocoa powder, allspice, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, Tobasco, & cornmeal. Simmer & stir occasionally for 30 minutes.

In a bowl, stir together the flour mixture, butter, milk, & egg until the batter is just combined. Stir in the Cheddar & the chili peppers. Put the tamale mixture into a casserole dish, and drop the batter by large spoonfuls around the edge of the casserole. Bake at 400 degrees for 10 minutes, reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake for 30 minutes more.

Notes - I skip the chili peppers when I actually do the cornbread topping, too spicy for me. For the vegan version, you need extra tomato sauce to make up for the missing beef fat. I assume it would get pretty crispy on top if you baked it with whatever the vegan version of the cornbread recipe is, but I imagine it would turn out ok.
