Movie Night at the Taters Estate

Sat August 28 at 7:00 PM, Casa De Taters
35 Mariner Terrace, Toronto, ON M5V, Canada (Map & Directions)
Come over for Turkish Star Trek Wars and the DO NOT WANT version of The Phantom Menace Revenge of the Sith! (I blame the rye for my complete wrongness)
I'm thinking Saturday the 28th? Warning: tiny downtown apartment. If there are oodles of folks who want to come out for a night of ridiculous movies, we can find a venue with enough room for us all.

That's an awesome theme for a movie night. I'm in!

What on earth is Turkish Star Trek???

I must attend this. Yes.
posted by Kif at 2:52 PM on August 18, 2010

Typewriter: it's a movie that doesn't exist (but it should!). I took a quick look at both movies to make sure I still had them on my hard drive and realized I'd gotten them both so very very wrong.

Hilarious. In.

Oooh! I'm in. You know I am.

(Are there subtitles, or do we get to do our own live dubbing MST3K-style!)

On preview: "Note: You're going to see these people in real life."

Oh, yeah? Define "real life."
posted by maudlin at 3:55 PM on August 18, 2010

Both are subtitled. We may need a drinking game!

*cough* Guys, don't forget the attendance buttons at the right.
posted by maudlin at 4:32 PM on August 18, 2010

Clicked! Though to be fair, I don't recall seeing them there when this was just a proposed meetup.
posted by FishBike at 5:27 PM on August 18, 2010

I'd like to attend! I can only click "maybe" right now though.

I may or may not be in town that day - will know my plans by the end of this week and let you know. Turkish Starwars is awesome!

I'm in! Is it wrong to want to say "Tater Towers" or "Tater HQ"???

I'm going to bring taters (baked) and fixin's! (can I heat them up there?)
posted by typewriter at 9:05 AM on August 19, 2010

Yes - we have the technology for heating foods! I also found a recipe for Pan-Galactic Gargle Blasters:

1 oz Jack Daniel's® Tennessee whiskey
1 oz peach schnapps
4 - 6 oz orange juice
1 splash Blue Curacao liqueur

Mmmmm. Green candy-tasting alcohol...

You're actually going to PLAY 'The Backstroke of the West' for a full audience? Wow. (I completely get your the "DO NOT WANT" line by the way, that bit MAKES the experience.)

Wish I was in easy travel range 'cause that sounds awesome.

Jealous! Wish I could come. Have some extra taters for me!

Darn, shoulda booked my flight home an extra day/two - that'll teach me not to check MeFi before planning travel...

Ack! I have to downgrade to a maybe. Solar power experimentation has to go ahead when weather permits, and Sunday looks good...

Is there a time to show up or is it OK if we all show up for breakfast?
posted by troll on a pony at 2:41 PM on August 25, 2010

You can't come over for breakfast unless you bring me a seeing-eye pony!
If 7-8pm is good with everyone, we'll start then-ish. Kif is offering to make Mai Tais, otherwise BYOB.

Oh - and I'm in apartment 603. The front desk guy can let you in, or call my cell (416-823-6548) and I'll pop downstairs to let you in. Hooray, movie party :)

Taters, any kitties or dogs that I should know about? The grand irony of my screen name is that I'm allergic to both, but I'll be fine if I pop an allergy pill upon arrival.

Does Kif have a favorite beer?
posted by tantrumthecat at 8:17 AM on August 28, 2010

I have one cat, so yes - pop your allergy pill. I'll ask Kif beer questions :)
posted by soft and hardcore taters at 8:43 AM on August 28, 2010

Oh, and since the address isn't really easy to gleam from the google map, it's 35 Mariner :)
posted by soft and hardcore taters at 1:22 PM on August 28, 2010

Well, talk of allergy pills and drinking is timely. Unless you're really sure that your allergy med and alcohol can be combined with absolutely no ill effects (as in, you've done this before, not that you think it should be OK), you really should choose one or the other.

Last night around 9 I took two Benadryl because my fall allergies were kicking in at an annoying level, then had a single glass of wine with supper at 10. A single glass of wine usually leaves me with a light buzz. Last night, I started falling asleep right there at the table. I managed to shake myself awake to go to the couch to start watching a movie I really wanted to see, fell asleep again, woke up, couldn't hold a coherent conversation, staggered upstairs to fetch something and on the way down, completely missed the bottom stair (just thudded, didn't fall), fell asleep on the couch AGAIN, and was still noticeably impaired at 2 AM, when I got taken out for an hour-long walk in the cool air, where I finally woke up completely.

So I was fine from that point on, but if the point of movie night is watching and talking about movies, this is something to keep in mind. And I'll be bringing a single beer and will pet the kitty, even if I do get a few hives. (I owned cats for years, but found some of them would occasionally give me hives on my forearm, and sometimes not. I think it depends on the cat. However, I'm willing to let people check out my arms a few times during the evening as a fun party game.)

Argh. Not going to make it back downtown anytime soon! Sorry will have to miss the Turkish Star Wars. Have a good one!
posted by typewriter at 3:02 PM on August 28, 2010

That was fun! Turkish Star Wars is the most hilariously atrocious movie I've seen in a long time. Maybe ever. Thanks for being great hosts.
posted by FishBike at 10:58 PM on August 28, 2010

Those were some awesomely bad movies! I had a great time, thanks for hosting. We should do this again sometime soon. (Also cat in a bag was hilarious)
posted by troll on a pony at 6:08 AM on August 29, 2010

What a great night! Thanks so much to taters (and Kif) for making the mAgIc happen.

Turkish Star Wars: words fail me. They really do. And if people see a certain number of sock puppet accounts soon with the word "ratio" in the names, the credit will belong to the unsung hero (or machine) who subtitled the Backstroke of the West. This glossary was helpful after the fact.

And Cat in a bag was a highlight. Cats are weird, bless 'em.

Cat The Cat is indeed an adorable kitty, and my allergies didn't bother me at all.

Great times last night!

I lurrrve you all and am currently nomming on leftover snacks - hooray! Would anyone be interested in making this a monthly movie/board game night with me and Kif?

Count me in!
posted by maudlin at 4:55 PM on August 30, 2010

Me too! I can also provide movies like Robogeisha if that looks interesting/bad enough.
posted by troll on a pony at 5:07 PM on August 30, 2010

I might not be able to make it every month, but this sounds like a fun idea - I have a couple of TV Carnage DVDs that make for great drunken viewing.
posted by tantrumthecat at 5:30 PM on August 30, 2010

I can't believe I missed what sounds like some dreadful, dreadful movies. And I have tater fixings in my fridge.
posted by typewriter at 6:23 AM on August 31, 2010

I had a great time to! Loved the movies and would be up for boardgames and bad movies in the future as well. For those who enjoy bad movies, might I suggest Pterodactyl. It answers the age old question "Can Coolio dodge bullets from point blank ranch?".

I am sorry I missed this meetup but I'm definitely interested in coming to the next one!
posted by flex at 8:22 PM on September 1, 2010

Oh dear. I think this means that BadMovieMeetup will have to be a recurring thing (^_^)

Robogeisha is in because of the FRIED SHRIMP!
