Let's meetup, San Antonio! I know I'm not the only one here!
There's a ton of places here in the city to hang out. Let's pick a date, time and place and do it!

Why don't you suggest someplace? San Antonio is pretty big. In the past we've met at Blue Star Brewery (we being me, bigmusic who's apparently on Mefi Hiatus, and some out-of-towners) - is that the only SA meetup ever?

Blue Star Brewery sounds fine, but as you pointed out, there isn't much meetup history in San Antonio. Is SA some kind of deadzone for MeFi? I'll memail some other SAer's and see what they think.

It's cause all the cool kids are in Austin. :)

But in more seriousness, if there's a time and date that lines up I've been meaning to head back to San Antonio to finish up a trip to the McVay which was cut short a few weeks ago. Grub and a pint with mefites as well would make for a pretty nice day trip.

Saturdays would probably be better for me, also preferably someplace with parking.

Yeah, most of the Central Texas meetups in recent history (as in, like the past two years that we've lived here) have been in Austin. San Antonio's had like 2 meetup attempts in the last 3 years; Austin's had over a dozen. But I, too, would be down for heading down there for a day trip or something.

fontophilic: it's the McNay, not the McVay.

I think just possibly maybe I might be kinda sorta interested (if I can psyche myself up for it; long story short, much easier than done). I've never attended a meetup before, so if you don't mind me asking: those of us who mostly tend to be lurkers on MeFi, um, how "welcome" are us lurker-types at these meetups, honestly? Do those of us that have barely posted make you more active folks uncomfortable in any way?

much less someone who has long since feared that SA is a deadzone, *period*, but anyway...

Lurkers are awesome.

At one of the Austin meetups, one of the newer Mefi members, no lie, studied the Mefi wiki before he came. There won't be a test. Heck, I usually bring my spouse who is an ultra-lurker - he mostly just listens to me recount Mefi or AskMe threads to him over dinner.

Okay, I'm free on Saturday 8/14. Any takers or should it be farther in the future?
posted by Azazel Fel at 6:15 PM on August 18, 2010

Whoops, did I say 8/14? I meant 8/28.

We also need to visit the McNay (we're members despite living in Austin) because there's an exhibit we want to see closing in September. I'll put myself and Mr. immlass down as a maybe for 8/28. We might have room for a passenger or two who's OK with art museum detours.

There's not much near the McNay besides Tong's Thai. I ate at The Cove a few weeks ago, and while it was sort of expensive, the food was really good and there's a lot of air-conditioned seating in the beer hall (or outside in the beer garden if it's not too hot) and lots of parking across the street.

Here's another Austinite who's willing to drive to S.A. The 28th looks good for me.

A couple of years ago, I visited the McNay and we ate a classic Tex-Mex place on Broadway, I think. From Google Maps, it looks like it may have been the Picante Grill? If any San Antonians know what I'm talking about, that may be another option.

Oh awesome. I love The Cove. Carwash/Laundromat/Good Beer List. The 28th works for me as well.

I have made one Austin meet. I work every other weekend. Working the 28th......

The Cove looks fantastic. So does the McNay, and I've never been to either! Perfect!

Let's say The Cove at Noon and then a ride to the McNay for those who are interested. My Toyota seats 4 comfortably and 5 uncomfortably. McNay is open until 5 on the 28th. Is that enough time?

A couple of hours at the Cove and a couple of hours at the McNay sounds good to me. How many we can haul depends on whether I can get the little light on my car taken care of. If it's a short haul, we can take two either way, but if I get my car fixed, we can take three.

The 28th doesn't really work for us since we want to go to the (512) Brewing anniversary tasting that they're doing from 2-5pm. Any interest in doing this the weekend after, on September 4th?
posted by malthas at 12:59 PM on August 21, 2010

That's Labor Day weekend. I know we have plans and I bet we're not the only ones.
posted by immlass at 4:30 PM on August 21, 2010

Okay how does everybody feel about Sept. 4th?
posted by Azazel Fel at 3:48 AM on August 22, 2010

The 28th is better for me, but I can likely make it on the 4th as well.

If this gets moved to the 4th, though, don't be surprised if y'all see me at the (512) tasting, malthas and fontophiliac. It's the end of the month and cheap beer is a good thing.

Okay, since tomorrow is the 28th, let's plan on the 4th instead.

Sounds good to me.

It looks like this rolled off the main MeTa page. Azazel Fel, I think there's a switch somewhere that you can flip to move this from "proposed" to "upcoming"?

The Cove, September 4th at Noon.

Who is with me, Comrades?!?!
posted by Azazel Fel at 5:49 PM on August 30, 2010

Soooo... how are we going to find each other? Is someone going to make a sign?
posted by donajo at 4:19 PM on September 2, 2010

I would reserve a table but the lady at The Cove says they don't take reservations. Hence, I will make a sign. If you can't find the sign, ask one of the staff or the bartender and they'll direct you over. This all sounds very informal so if it takes an hour for everybody to roll in and get discovered it's no biggie.

Sadly Mr. immlass and I have other plans for this weekend, but we'll catch you guys some other time.

Malthas and I are driving to SA as I type. See you there!

Awesome! Located on the patio at the moment but may move inside if it gets crowded enough. I have hummus!

Yeah, so lunch clearly didn't work for me - sorry to miss y'all and catch you next time!

Well I had to work again this weekend. Some day I will get to come to one of these.
