The launch party for "The Little Women Cookbook: Novel Takes on Classic Recipes from Meg, Jo, Beth, Amy, and Friends," co-written by MetaFilter's own exceptinsects (more info in this projects post), is Saturday, Nov. 2, at Run for Cover in Ocean Beach. I propose an outing to the bookstore, then a stop at the Kaiserhof's Biergarten. London summer drinks - Walthamstow

UPDATE: Let's go for it. Walthamstow summer drinks on Saturday 21st July. (Changed from 14th because I was stupid). Assuming the weather holds, let's go for drinks at the Ravenswood industrial estate in Walthamstow. It has a range of beverage purveyors, including Wildcard Brewery, Pillars Brewery, and Mother's Ruin Gin Palace, as well as the magical wonderland that is God's Own Junkyard. It's a relatively short walk from Walthamstow Central or Walthamstow Queens Road and is just on the edge of the posh bit of Walthamstow, "the village". If the weather turns and it looks rainy, there are plenty of other pubs around, like the Rose and Crown. I suggest we try and get a table/space at Wildcard Brewery - you can bring drinks from the others over if, for example, you prefer a cocktail from mother's ruin. Given its a popular weekend hangout, I suggest an early start for those that are willing - 12.30pm? And stop when we stop.

Gathering in NYC

The wonderful starlybri was kind enough to organize a recent NYC meet up, and some of us got to talking about how they used to happen more frequently in the city. So overhauser has kindly secured a spot at Lucky's in the East Village for us to gather on Saturday, December 9. The time will be 2-6pm. There will be cheap drinks, and we'd like to do this pot luck style with food! This is the same day as Santa Con, which is happening more in Midtown. It's two weeks past Thanksgiving and two weeks before Christmas and a few days before the beginning of Hanukkah. So hopefully we can gather without feeling harried by other holiday commitments. I mentioned at the last meet up that I have lots (and lots) of really hot jalapeño jelly* from this summer's canning efforts. It goes very well with all kinds of things, so I'll bring a few jars of that, and a pot of rice (approximate size determined by expected crowd). There will be drinks at the bar, and of course, please post here what kind of snacks you might bring so we don't end up with 15 bowls of 7 layer dip (per overhauser's request...even though I really like 7 layer dip and would just want to be sure to have enough chips on hand, I can see how variety would be appreciated.) I know there is often some back and forth about when and where, but this worked out because the bar is booked for several dates surrounding this, the holiday season is upon us, and I was willing to post the event if the details were already worked out. Anxiety, yo, I am here to be a good enough planner, and not a perfect planner. If you can make it, I'll be very happy. If you can't make it, then next time! *I didn't take the seeds out. I don't generally eat spicy things.

First Friday in Richmond VA

Drinks, food and art. I will be in Richmond for First Friday and want to explore the heck out of it on foot. Lemaire at the Jefferson Hotel has fancy happy hour in the bar from 4 to 7 pm. Appetizers 3 for $20, wine and drink specials. The Lantern Parade starts at 7 pm. There are light sculptures around the Arts District. If there's later night blues music that would be even more swell. Come wander with me. I may edit the meeting point and time to put us closer to the start of the Lantern Parade.

Work will bring me to your fair town on October 24th and 25th. Having never been before, I would enjoy finding a fun place to drink the delicious beer of your land on Wednesday October 25th. I'm not precisely sure when I'll be done for the day, so a late-dinner may also be in the cards, depending on the timing...I'm thinking somewhere around 7-8pm? I'm staying at the Omni and enjoy walking but can grab a cab or whatever also.

Join me and a bunch of other mefites eating delicious dim sum at Hei La Moon, since Empire Garden is on vacation. --- I can't make it out to Cambridge for trivia on Thursdays, but I'd love to see everyone all the same. Dinner? Drinks? Picnic on the esplanade? Picnic at the arboretum? Fancy ice cream? I'm in JP, but I don't really know where people gather here or elsewhere, so perhaps I'll let someone else suggest a good location?

I'm traveling to Chicago next week. Anyone free to get together on Tuesday (8/8) or Wednesday (8/9)? I'm up for dinner, drinks, rocking out, etc. And I know nothing about Chicago, so wherever/whatever is convenient for you all is great by me! The only caveat is that I'll be using public transport and cabs to get around.

Escape to NYC!

Hey, I'm going to be in NYC June 14th to 18th. Would love to see/meet area mefites. I'm escaping North Carolina for a brief jaunt up to NYC just for fun. I have every evening free at this time, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. Daytimes, too, but I figure most people will be at work. My plane on Sunday to go home isn't till the evening, so I have that day as well. I'll be staying in what my friend calls "Downtown Brooklyn" (Jay Street/Metrotech). SO! Anyone want to meet up? What sorts of things do y'all do? I'd like to do something where people get together, and can talk while drinking beer or cocktails and eating snacky food. Also, lemme tag on a request for recommendations. My goal for this trip is to actually do things in NYC that you can't do other places. Once up on a time ages ago (Pre 9/11) I lived up in Westchester, but for some reason I didn't spend much time in the city. I've gone to many of the museums, so that's less of a draw. I think I have scored tickets to watch The View, because LIVE STUDIO AUDIENCE. Any other ideas? It's just going to be me.

Ignore Super Bowl?

We're coming up on that national tradition known as Super Bowl Sunday. In the past we've gotten together to play games rather than watch the game, but there was always something missing which prevented us from achieving the full on ignore experience: the actual football game in the background being completely ignored. Well, we shall remedy that this year with our Ignore Super Bowl Party at out new game store, Rune & Board, out in Hillsboro. And in order to achieve the full on ignore experience, the Super Bowl will be on the TV. Because this will take place in our actual business during normal business hours, it will be alcohol-free. However, there are a few options to grab a beer if you'd like. We also have a selection of drinks and snacks for purchase. Special note: Google is being stupid and showing our location incorrectly. We are actually located between 2nd and 3rd on the south side of the street in the very colorful building. This is 1 block west of the Hillsboro Central/SE 3rd TC MAX Station.
