Playland not at the beach is open Monday to celebrate their 5th birthday, I am in town for a few days, at last the excuse you needed to get over to El Cerrito in the afternoon! Afterwards maybe a visit to some/all of the local brew pubs. There is a tour of Pyramid brewery at 4pm and Triple Rock and Jupiter are an easy BART hop away. There is a $15 cover charge for Playland, but there are also 30 free to play pinball machines and a magician performing! Meet outside 1 - 1.15pm. Five blocks from El Cerrito del Norte BART. If you don't fancy that, meet at The Pyramid brewery tour at 4pm, which is free AFAICT.

Time for another San Francisco booze meetup! This time: Bourbon & Rye whiskeys! We've done Scotch Whisky, we've done gin. Now let's come taste/drink a bunch of bourbon & rye whiskeys! Real Escape from a Locked Room Mystery -

How would Bay Area Metafilterians like to meet up in a locked room in a Japanese mystery game, with 90 minutes to solve the puzzle and get out? Inspired by this SF Chronicle article. In yesterday's SF Chronicle there was an article about a mystery game where you and up to 10 others are locked in a room for 90 minutes. Inside the room are a bunch of clues that tell you how to get out! How awesome would it be for a contingent of Bay Area Metafilterians to crack the puzzle? Be warned though, that the clues are set up to be difficult enough so that only about 5% of the participants actually solve it. Apparently the room also has guide type people in it as well, to help people - the Chronicle reporter said they discouraged their group from taking the wiring apart... No indication as to whether you can bring beer in, but I'm sure we can figure something out! Here's the webpage for the event and the dates available - looks like Thurs - Sunday March 6-10 and 27-31. It repeats several times a day. Unfortunately, it looks like it's about $30 a ticket, so not cheap, but maybe if we did it as a group we could get a discount?

Next Sunday (March 3) the Roxie (16th and Mission) is screening the rarely-seen pre-code classic "Shanghai Express"- directed by Joseph Von Sternberg and starring the incomparable Marlene Dietrich and Anna May Wong. Meetup fun could occur before, after, and during, depending on preferences. Screenings are at 3:30 and 7:30, which gives interested parties different options for pre- or post- drinking and nourishment and in joining in for the movie or not, with many appealing options right in the neighborhood. I was thinking maybe the matinee and then some early booze or eats (people could opt in as they see fit), but am open depending on schedules and preferences. Plot summary: crazy shit goes down on a train. And you've got Marlene to look at. Yoni Ki Baat is a South Asian take on the Vagina Monologues that has been part of the Bay Area for nearly 10 years. The pieces, written by South Asians around the world, deal with various themes of gender, sexuality, and race - from sexual repression, to health and beauty concerns, to love and marriage. I am performing in this so I'd love to see you there! There are two ticket dates: Saturday March 9th and Sunday March 10th. The Saturday show starts at 7pm and the Sunday show is at 5pm. Hello, all, I am new to the Bay Area, am going to be in San Francisco this Friday (Dec. 7) and I would love to meet all of you over dinner! We're meeting at Frjtz at 6. I am going to be in the general vicinity of the 16th St. BART station, and I was thinking of an early-ish dinner in case people have other evening plans? Maybe someplace like Mozzeria around 6? I am entirely open to suggestions and will bend to the will of the community on the best inexpensive dinner location! ETA 12/6: Okay, I'm officially decreeing- Frjtz at 6 on Friday (tomorrow!) (bc Mozzeria is booked, sad face). Someone wear a Metafilter shirt! Or just look for me, I will be the short round lady wearing a pink scarf.

American Public Health Assn San Francisco Meetup~

APHA is holding its annual meeting in San Francisco 10/27-10/31. I was wondering if any Metafilter folks are coming for APHA and, if so, would you like to schedule a meetup? I work for the San Francisco Dept of Public Health, and am involved in a few sessions. If people are interested, I might be able to connect folks with SFDPH efforts PLUS I'd love to meet other public health Metafilterians. Anyone interested? We could meet before, during, or after the meeting (or all three!).

Halloween party in Oakland! Last year we hosted a Metafilter Halloween party, and we though, what the hell, we could do this again. We have tons of space, a patio, and are generally okay people. We're just under a mile from 2 different Bart stations, and have plenty of parking. If you need an excuse to wear a costume, here you go! If you don't want to wear a costume, we won't judge! Bring something to drink or eat and we'll make it a party! UPDATE- We are apt 404. To buzz in you need to press #15 on the intercom.

Rosamunde in the Mission, sometime during Burning Man. Some of us were saying at the last meetup that we should meet up somewhere in the Mission during the annual Burning Man rapture. But nobody's posted it yet. So here it is. Rosamunde in the Mission (2832 Mission, steps from 24th Street BART). Delicious pork products and delicious beer. I have a flexible schedule these days, so I'll let other people fight over the time. Those of you with cars should feel free to drive around, park, then drive around some more, and park again, and so on. (Preferably your joyriding should be done before the consumption of the beers.) Maybe before or after the meetup you should drive up to Dolores Park and get some ice cream at Bi-Rite and then sit in the park and eat it.

So, Koi Palace is the Best Chinese Restaurant in the US according to some dude. And it's in Daly City, just a short hop from San Francisco. Tuesday, 6:30pm to beat the long wait for tables. I have six yeas so far, ten and we can do a fixed price menu (see menu link in discussion).

Do we have enough astronomy buffs and Exploratorium members to enjoy the partial solar eclipse on the evening of Sunday, May 20th at the Members Appreciation Night shindig? Members can usually bring guests (depending on the level of membership), so buddying up with a member would work for those who aren't members themselves. Activities: costume contest, complimentary meal with beer and wine, music, dancing, and a partial solar eclipse! 6 - 9 pm at the Exploratorium in San Francisco. Official link to event P.S. JP fashion exhibit! I read the reviews when this debuted and it is supposed to be fantastic. It also "contains adult themes." What more could we ask for? I had a great time hosting the Autodesk Gallery tour, and would love to do another meet-up. This may be more challenging as it (a) costs money ($20) and (b) requires actual commitment to attend (because see (a)). However, I am up for the challenge. If we get a minimum of 10 people, we could "have access to priority booking and private tours". Imagine if we guaranteed 20 people! I bet I could talk them into some extras. Let me know if you would like to see fashion, cone-shaped bras, and other fabulousness. I will also volunteer to arrange the appropriate before and/or after drinks venue. Please provide feedback on date/time: the exhibit is open until August. I originally proposed June 8th but must postpone because of a family emergency.

GDC meetup with hellojed

Mefi's own hellojed is in town this week for the GDC. I was lucky enough to get an evening out with this fine man, and we had such a good time, we decided that we must do it again before he leaves. He leaves Saturday morning, so if you're free Friday evening, join us! I'm driving up Friday afternoon so that we can visit the Golden Gate Bridge and find some other fun stuff to do. I think Hellojed (or Leo, as he is sometimes called) mentioned wanting to go to Smuggler's Cove for drinks, so if possible, let's do that. We're open as far as time goes, and if you want to come along to visit the bridge feel free to join! UPDATE: We're planning on Smugglers Cove at 7pm, and may move someplace close by if it gets too crowded, or if people still want to meet later.

Exploratorium After Dark

Exploratorium After Dark happens on the first Thursday of every month. This month's theme is vinyl (as in records). It includes the guy who has figured out a way to play records by taking pictures of them, who probably deserves a metafilter post of his own. So we've been to the Cal Academy's "Nightlife" a few times. Reviews were mixed. But there are other, more awesome museums! Like the Exploratorium! Which we should go to! I will stop exclamation-marking! I saw Carl Haber give a talk a few weeks ago. Somehow he managed to remain calm and not say DUDE I FOUND A WAY TO PLAY RECORDS BY TAKING PICTURES OF THEM! but this is what he has done. Plus there will be drinks! And hopefully mefites! I know you guys like drinks and mefites.

Autodesk Design Gallery Tour (Beer/Wine Afterwards)

Inspired by this thread on the 3-D printing of a jawbone, I'd like to organize a private tour of the San Francisco Autodesk Gallery for Mefites. For Mefites, by an official Mefite guide. NOTE: Updated info in extended description. Now including drinks info! The gallery is dedicated to all forms of design: whether you're interested in the special effects of Avatar, animation like Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, 3-D prototyping, simulation, and printing, sustainable design, or just want to understand what the heck we're doing with the Bay Bridge, there's something interesting to look at. Oh, we also have a huge Lego dinosaur and you can make a 3-D model of your head for use in games, bobble-heads, etc.! Tour at the Autodesk Gallery on Thursday, March 29th at 5:30 p.m. with a cocktail hour afterwards near Market and the Embarcadero. Let me know if the time works and if you have any preference of bars around here. UPDATED: I will be contacting each of you via MeMail with detailed information. Please note that the time has changed to 6 p.m. to accommodate all of us worker bees. Looking forward to it!

Bourbon and Science!

Because I am lazy, here is the description from the Cal Academy: What fun are bourbon and whiskey tastings without a mechanical bull and some honky tonk? That's right: this week, sample the wares of Bulleit Bourbon and George Dickel Whisky, and learn what each purveyor does to craft their unique spirits, then take a spin on a mechanical bull in the piazza. Plus, enjoy the acoustic stylings of Jeanie and Chuck's Country Roundup, and learn about the science of distilling from Nancy Fraley, Director of Research at the American Distilling Institute. Additional music by Miles the DJ. It's highly recommended you buy tickets beforehand. We can look for each other in front lobby about 6:30, if that works for folks.
