American in Beijing wants to grab some drinks!

Thu October 21 at 8:00 PM, Stone Boat Cafe
Guanghua Rd, Chaoyang, Beijing, China (Map & Directions)
I'm an American studying abroad in Beijing this semester, and I'd like to break out of the college bubble a little and meet some local Mefites. I obviously don't know the city all that well, so if people wanted to meet up, it'd probably be better for someone else to propose a venue. Anyone interested in meeting up sometime in the next few weeks?

I'm always up for a beer (or two). I'm out circa Oct 3 through Oct 9 but otherwise I'm around and generally free. I will leave venue selection to the grizzled Beijing veterans like Abiezer.

I would be up for this as well, but after October holiday since I'll also be away. If I may propose, let's move this to out of the Gulou area! I really like Twilight in Jianwai Soho, it's definitely a bit on the pricier side though at around 50-70 RMB for drinks.

I'm in Beijing moderately often (Shanghai resident here...). I'll definitely try to arrange a trip up once a date is set. Middle of Oct should work.

Only just seen this - taken me a while to adjust to the new IRL section. I'll be up for anything though am likely out of town for a day or two early/mid October. I'll even leave the lovely Gulou area (and my poor old dog) if need be.

Like Abiezer, I generally prefer the Gulou area, but I suppose we *could* do it somewhere else this time. I'm not even opposed to Jianwai Soho, though RMB 50-70 per drink is not really my idea of a deal.

showbiz_liz - I take it you're studying somewhere out in the Wudaokou/Haidian area? Haven't really spent much time there since my own student days, but wouldn't be opposed to heading out there if you have any recommendations. (It's ages since I hung out around there, so I will not be able to contribute any useful suggestions other than "not Propaganda.")
I'm also teaching a class on Monday and Wednesday nights near Beiwai, if that's in the neighborhood. I don't know the Weigongcun area well either, but there's a place right next to Beiwai ("The Old Bike," I think) that seems like it could make for a decent venue.

I'm in Haidian, but I'm definitely happy to venture elsewhere. I want to see more of the city- I haven't been to Gulou yet. As for Beiwai, it looks like I'm two or three km south of there.

I will not be able to contribute any useful suggestions other than "not Propaganda"

Ha! Part of the reason I want to meet up is to venture out of the Solutions/Houhai/Sanlitun routine that my classmates have established...

Just remembered that I will be out of town on a visa run for a few days around the 19th, so if the meetup will be around then, I may not be able to make it -- in which case I will refrain from pushing my hard-line pro-Gulou agenda.

Hey, if this is still going to happen, I'd be up for it! I'm also currently studying abroad in Haidian and totally sick of the "let's get trashed at Solutions/Propaganda!" stuff my friends on the same program are doing...

Ok guys, is anyone free this coming week? Any time between now and Sunday would be fine for me.
posted by showbiz_liz at 11:03 PM on October 9, 2010

Sure. Any date works for me, and in theory any location. (Solutions is back? Awesome. Oh, the memories.)

Any thoughts on time and place? Abiezer and I can reliably be counted on to recommend places around Gulou, but that's because we both live near there (he lives about 50 meters away from Alba), are lazy, and fear new things.

I'm of course going away tomorrow. Arse. Should be back by the weekend, but can't guarantee it, so I won't ask for it to be later if that doesn't suit everyone else.

I could do next week/weekend as well, if other people were agreeable. What about either this coming Sunday or the following Tuesday? One of you semi-natives should pick the venue.

At the risk of being shouted down by one and all, let me propose next Thursday, October 21 at Stone Boat Cafe in Ritan Park.

Let the recriminations begin.

Works for me. I might even be back from my fun fun visa run by then!

Works for me, too. I will either be just about to leave for, or just getting back from, Xi'an (I can't remember my own dang schedule!)

I won't be able to make it, but have a great time!

so I suppose we are on for tomorrow? great timing if so since I just got back from xian and inner mongolia.

I'm still up for it. I'll drop Abiezer a note to see if he's back in town. Does anyone know how to move this thing to the IRL front page?
posted by hawkeye at 9:40 PM on October 19, 2010

I am back and raring to go. Well, free to be with you, at least, which I shall be.
posted by Abiezer at 11:24 PM on October 19, 2010

Sweet! Do we have a venue/time?

(Also, I have a Chinese exam the next day, so don't mind me if I randomly mutter elementary Chinese under my breath.)

I thought we were going with hawkeye's suggestion of Stone Boat Cafe in Ritan park? What time is a good question. I'm free all day. No classes for me this week :)
posted by astapasta24 at 1:35 AM on October 20, 2010

I have class until 7:30, and I'm about half an hour away by taxi, so how about 8?
posted by showbiz_liz at 2:15 AM on October 20, 2010

8 sounds good. so how will we know we're all mefites? just look for people looking around for others?

I'm easy to spot. Imagine the looks of Jon Hamm from Mad Men, the charm of Cary Grant, and the effortless grace of Fred Astaire.

Now imagine the opposite.

See you tomorrow!

Hey astapasta, do you want to share a cab from Haidian?

Grr. Stuck in Hong Kong on a visa run. Have a good time, everybody!
posted by bokane at 9:52 AM on October 20, 2010

is there anyway to change this from proposed to actually happening in 9 hours?
posted by astapasta24 at 7:51 PM on October 20, 2010

I should be able to, but I have to provide an exact address that Google understands, which I can't seem to find!
