hugandpint and I will be in Portland, Oregon, USA for a spell in June and are interested in putting together a meetup that involves karaoke on either 6/6, 6/7, 6/8, or 6/9. I could get all fancy and actually look up where a good spot to do this might be or I could just ask if anyone has any ideas as to where the best karaoke digs are.

I have found this Karaoke From Hell thing on Thurs 6/6, which is in the always/usually/sometimes interesting live-band-karaoke format, though I know nothing about the location or the band or anything at all in this wild wild world, really. Anywhere in Portland is likely okay with us. I was a resident of your fine city when I became a Mefite way back in 2002, so I'm comfortable with the place. We're staying in SE, though as it always ends up being let's just say the more (or less) centrally located, the better. We'll have wheels and an engine and steering wheel and stuff.

Performance: Portland's Funniest Person comedy show

Opening night of Portland's Funniest Person contest, with a lot of the strongest competitors -- the ones who already work at Helium as MCs or features, including Metafilter's own msalt, Gabe Dinger, and Shane Torres. This is a dozen comics doing 5-6 minutes sets of their best material. If you tell them you're a friend of Mark, you can get 2 for 1 tickets (2 for $10). If that's still a bit steep, memail msalt as he has a limited number of free tickets, first come first served.

Hi Portland! I will be visiting your lovely city June 2-4, and I had a lot of fun meeting some of you the last time.

My schedule isn't quite as forgiving this time around - it's a Sunday-Tuesday trip, and I leave Tuesday evening, so I really only have the Sunday and the Monday. Of the two, I have the most flexibility on Sunday; my plane lands at about 1:30, and I figure I should be checked in and looking for something to do by about 3ish. I am under orders from my wife to bring her back a Voodoo Donuts hoody ("the magic is in the hole"), but past that, I'm pretty open. At least until the conference starts on Monday. I'll be staying downtown, at the Hilton. Would prefer to meet somewhere I can either walk or easily get to via transit. Is dinner with some of you a possibility? Or even a casual beer or two?

We can't let National Barbecue Month pass by uncelebrated, can we?

We're doing a grill/BBQ-based potluck, where everything (well, except maybe dessert) (and beverages) is done outside and over fire or in a smoker. Including vegetables...and maybe even fruit. What else? Let's think outside the oven... I have a smoker, and anyone who wants to bring over meat for me to smoke is welcome to do so. I'd need to have beef or pork by Friday evening the 17th as it will likely take most of Saturday to smoke; fish and chicken take less time - MeMail me to make plans. I have only a small Weber grill, so anyone who has a portable grill and is willing to bring it please do so, so that we don't have to stand around serially grilling one or two items at a time.

The first ever international competition for best palindromes of the year will conclude Sunday with a gala award ceremony in Portland. Show is free & all ages, 1 hour long. Comedian Dax Jordan from LA will headline; reigning World Palindrome Champion Mark Saltveit is M.C.

Over 250 entries from around the globe have been whittled to 10 finalists in each of 4 categories; short palindrome, long, poetry, and word-unit. The entries are very original and very strong. All of the competitors from the World Palindrome Championship are involved along with many talented newcomers found in a worldwide search. The panel of celebrity judges is a murderer's row of word geeks: "Weird Al" Yankovic! Demetri Martin! Will Shortz! John Flansburgh of They Might Be Giants! The 2012 British Arrow Awards (formerly the British Television Advertising Awards) are screening this weekend. Let's go!

March 2nd and 3rd at Whitsell Auditorium, on the PSU campus. Tickets are $10 in advance; $9 at the door. NW Film Center has this blurb about the show:
