Hey Boston area Mefites - let's eat some dumplings!

Proposed location: Empire (or Emperor, depending on which side of the street you're on) Garden, an awesome dim sum restaurant in an old theater. The place is huge and has a surreal mix of stereotypical Chinese restaurant decor and the old Art Nouveau theater decor. Plus, did I mention, DUMPLINGS! Proposed Date: Sunday May 26, maybe 10 or 11 ish? The time is flexible so I will turn this into a confirmed event once people weigh in. I suppose if nobody can make it on the 26th we can discuss alternative dates.

The maples are in bloom! Come take a (curated) walk in the Arnold Arboretum.

As part of the Cambridge Science Festival Arnold Arboretum has a series of free events featuring various parts of its collection. This Sunday (April 21) they are featuring maples. There are two tours (schedule pdf). I will be showing up for the 1:00 tour and it would be great to meet up with any other interested MeFikers. Possible lunch afterwards, if we can find the cafe we went to after the last Arnold Hike.

There's a fun looking daytime meetup on the 23rd. We're looking at have an evening meetup on the 24th to meet PAXers and locals.

But neither of us are really familiar with the area. I'll be coming in from MBTA south and restless_nomad will be scooting around before coming over to my place. Suggestions for venues that won't be mobbed where we could have a beer and a burger or something tasty?

Update: Sounds like folks are up for trying to meet at the board games library area at 10. I'll try to keep this thread updated through the day with location info. I know some people like to just wander the floor for a bit when they first get in so we can still aim to reconvene at noon.----- PAXEast is March 22-24. Anyone else planning to go? It hasn't always been the most organized meet-up but I had a lot of fun with some mefites last year. If there's enough interest, I propose a meet-up on Saturday for boardgames or PC/console freeplay.

The schedule isn't finalized yet but I assume the beanbag lounge will be in the same spot. Passes are already sold out for Saturday, but it seems like that's usually the day with the most people so I assume still best for a meet-up? If enough people are interested I will change this to confirmed. CONFIRMED!

This weekend is the annual Arisia science fiction convention, at the Westin Boston Waterfront. I'll be there nerding out, and it just occurred to me to wonder if there would be other Mefites there.

I'll be co-hosting an open party on Saturday night of the convention in room 453. Come on by if you're at the con.

Let's meet up with our kids! Or not, if you don't have kids. You don't have to have kids. But if you do... let's meet them up!

We're moving to Boston with our toddler, and I know other Bostonian MeFites have toddlers... and maybe other other Bostonian MeFites want to sit around and watch toddlers because it's kind of like watching really small drunk people? Anyway. I'd like to propose some kind of weekend meet-up in a kid-friendly venue - like perhaps the Common? Bring yr tots! Or not! Or whatever!

Free concert at the Hatch Shell. Opening night for the Boston Landmark Orchestra featuring classic works of Aaron Copland. It's free. And it's at the Hatch Shell.

I know nothing about classical music; I'm going mostly because my wife is in the chorus. I'll have my son, a blanket, maybe a chess board, a book and some sort of picnic dinner for myself. If any Mefites care to join us, we'll be getting there a bit early so hopefully will have a decent spot picked out. I don't know how to find another Mefite in the crowd, so if anyone is planning on going just me-mail me and I'll send you my cell number so we can connect via text or I'll post a general description here in the thread. I'll be wearing some sort of shirt and most likely pants. You'll find me. I'm putting 6:00 PM as the start time but the concert starts at 7:00. I'll be there around 5:00 so I can take my son from my wife while she rehearses or parties backstage with groupies or some such. What else are you going to do on a Wednesday night? It's free!

I think we all had a great time gaming and such last year -- let's do it again! The full show map hasn't been released yet, but I'd be surprised if there wasn't a handheld lounge with beanbag chairs setup approximately where it was last year. (I'll post a comment with further details and a link to the map once it's available.) Let's plan to meet there on Saturday morning. We'll play it by ear afterwards -- maybe board games, maybe PC or console freeplay -- maybe both if we have more people than last year.

Sorry, you'll obviously need a PAX East three-day or Saturday-only pass to join us. And they're sold out. Maybe if there's clamoring, we can do Sunday instead (and there are Sunday passes still available).

I'm visiting an old friend who just started her MLIS program Boston and was wondering if anybody wanted to meet up this coming weekend.

We have nothing set in concrete to do besides catch up and enjoy a long weekend, so we're up for anything (as long as it doesn't require driving out anywhere since neither of us have a car) and suggestions from locals are welcome. We'll be available the 27th and the 28th.

The Boston Book Festival is back for its third year. In one day, 33 different lectures about books: reading 'em, writing 'em, fiction, sports, crime, graphic novels, and on and on.

At various locations around Copley Square, from 10am 'til 5pm. There are also exhibitors' tents on the square. I've been to the last two, and got to see some interesting talks and liked seeing all the bibliophiles milling about. It's supposed to be a clear day tomorrow, too. Be warned that venues often fill up early. Bring a book to read while waiting!

Meetup: The Arboretum Strikes Back!

Join the Boston MeFikers (organized by bondcliff, canine epigram, and cranberry_nut) for a autumnal stroll through the Arnold Arboretum, the oldest public arboretum in North America.

We expect to spend 1-2 hours at the Arboretum. Check the forecasted temperature to see if you need a jacket. Good walking shoes and a water bottle are suggested. Older children are welcome if under adult supervision. The organizers take no responsibility for childcare. Those up for a snack, coffee, or smoothie following the walk will head out to a nearby establishment. The group will meet at the Forest Hills Gate entrance on the Arborway, close to the Forest Hills stop on the Orange Line (map here). The Arboretum is easily accessible by MBTA. Here are directions to the Arboretum. Rain will be a reason to cancel and any updates will be posted here.
