Description:
In an age of musical pluralism, it would seem that song contests should be an anachronism. And yet Idol, The Voice, and other similar franchises remain amongst the top-rated television programs internationally. On the twentieth anniversary of the EU, one might think that European nationalism had died down a bit. But, you know, what's twenty years compared to hundreds of years of history? And there was a while there when the Eurodisco sound was decidedly outré, having taken a backseat first to the guitar-based approach of grunge and then the global ascendancy of hip hop. More and more, however, the blueprint for the "EDM" on the pop charts was drawn up in studios in Italy or Belgium, circa 1983.

And so, with all this being the case, one might conclude that the Eurovision Song Contest, an annual event celebrating competition, national pride, and above all else the undying beat of disco, would feel strangely relevant again. And maybe, in a way, it does. And yet it still feels cheesy. Very, very cheesy. (In the end, its earnestness is probably what does it in. You just can't get away with outfits like that anymore if you mean it.) And we say CELEBRATE THE CHEESE!

How, precisely, do we recommend celebrating the cheese?

With cheese, natch!

Bring your favorite European cheese to Betalevel on Saturday*, we'll bring some of ours, we'll watch the Eurovision finals together, and while votes are being cast on songs, we'll cast our own votes — for cheese.

If your cheese wins, you will be crowned the 2013 Head Cheese!

Sat May 18 at 12:00 PM, Betalevel

Proposed: Gallifrey One Attendees

Going to Gallifrey One? Me too! Let's meet up.

If you already have your membership to Gallifrey One, let's meet up! I know it's capped at 3200 people this year, but even so, I can't be the only Mefite going. (If you haven't heard of it and you're a Doctor Who fan, you really should go: Gallifrey One. But not this year, because it's sold out. Next year's tickets will go on sale March 8, IIRC.)

I'll arrive tomorrow and I'll be there through Monday morning. I know the schedule is packed, but if anyone else IS there, do you want to have breakfast or carve out our very own corner of LobbyCon?

(Warning: I'm terrible at social stuff...but I do like talking to people and I'd love to finally meet some more Mefites, if my hunch is right and some of you will be there.)

EVERYTHING IS TERRIBLE descends on the Cinefamily for an evening of the best, weirdest shit you've ever seen.

More about Everything is Terrible can be found here. I will not do it justice.

There is a 9:30 and a midnight showing, but midnight seems slightly ambitious, maybe?

Tickets are $12, free for members. Buy your ticket in advance! (Don't be like me with the endeavor space shuttle visit, m'kay?)

Sat December 22 at 9:30 PM, Cinefamily

So the LA Percussion Quartet, who were just nominated for a couple Grammys (!), is playing some new music for percussion and electronics, including pieces by James Tenney, John Cage, Ben Hackbarth, Shaun Naidoo, Daniel Lentz, and me!

I am super excited about this. It's at Atwater Crossing in Atwater Village, which if you've never been, is a really cool warehouse space with great acoustics, and there's a kitchen and bar too so food/beer can be acquired before/during/after.

It's being presented by People Inside Electronics, the concert series I help run (more info at that link).

Maybe see you soon!

Sat December 8 at 8:00 PM, Atwater Crossing

Mefi's scram is hosting a LAVA event about Jim Tully, the author (among many other things) of a novel made into a movie with Louise Brooks.

My father will also be part of a discussion about my grandfather's Pickwick Bookshop.

Meetup: CicLAvia 10/7 - Let's ride bikes!

Hey Los Angeles - CicLAvia is happening again this Sunday! In the past we've met to play foursquare, get coffee/lunch/wevs, and ride the course together. This time let's meet for breakfast at 9am before the course opens, then ride our bikes down to MacArthur Park for the festivities!

Previous CicLAvias we've camped out along the course playing foursquare, but I think we should concentrate on meeting at a place for refreshments of some sort in case the keepers of the foursquare ball don't feel like toting it around the bike course this time. Plus, I like riding my bike at the bike-riding event.

Speaking of which, I'll be riding the course a lot, just for fun. Back and forth and back and forth and up and down all of the various legs of the route. Usually I'd start at Melrose/Heliotrope, but it looks like they lopped off that leg this year in favor of going south on Figuroa and north up into Chinatown. Given that, it looks like a good meeting place might be near McArthur Park, or maybe a more central location at 7th & Spring. There's also going to a performance stage and some music acts playing at Grand Park I believe—that might be a good place to gather as well.

In any case let's start at 9am at Square One, on Fountain just south of the big blue $cientology center, for some excellent breakfast. We should be done and headed towards downtown and the course by the time it opens, around 10am. Or if you want we can meet up somewhere along the course while it's open, or if anyone is still up for it by 3pm, we can get a beer or something.

Come on! Let's ride bikes!

Sun October 7 at 9:00 AM, Square One Cafe

Meetup: Meetup in Los Angeles

I'm back in LA (specifically, North Hollywood) after two and a half years on the East Coast. I'd love to meet all you LA MeFites!

Is there any place where you guys usually go? I'd prefer the Studio City/Burbank/Glendale/Pasadena area since there's where I usually am, but I'm open to suggestions as long as it's not too out of the way. My schedule is pretty open at the moment, so I'm open to suggestions for dates too.

Thanks everyone!

EDIT: It is done! The date and time is the Roost, 7 PM on September 16th.

Sun September 16 at 7:00 PM, The Roost
