πŸ“¬ Hello there! πŸ“©
The Metafilter Transition Team (TT) is pleased to announce that self nominations are open for the inaugural Steering Committee! The purpose of the MetaFilter Steering Committee (SC) will be to develop and implement site policy, code updates, and ensure the financial health of the site. The SC works with the site staff and site owner to ensure that there is not a single failure point for site decisions or actions, and that there are an adequate number of people available to respond to community needs. Long story short this will be a committee of Metafilter members who help guide the site and act as the voice of the members at large. Interested? Come on over to MetaTalk and read all the details!

My spouse and I are planning to attend the Lincoln Park Zoo's Adults Night Out event on June 26. Tickets are $20 and may sell out. We'll be socially distanced, wearing masks, and fully vaccinated. The venue looks like it should be reasonably safe, perhaps aside from lines for the cash bar. If anyone else is interested in going, it would be fun to meet up in person.

Labor Day Weekend is fast approaching in Atlanta which means time again for Nerdi Gras, or as it's more properly known, DragonCon! A general "everything" fandom convention run mainly on volunteer labor, in contrast to conventions that are driven by the marketing departments of major mass media outlets, it's 5 days of fun spread across several city-block sized convention hotels. Going by past year's IRL posts, there's usually roughly a dozen or so MeFites on average who on any given year. That's out of a crowd of 80,000+ attendees, so chances are we'll never run into each other. But the central host hotel also was once The Capitol District's Tribute Training Center a few years ago, so May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor. [more inside]

This is a casual gathering at Southpaw to mark what would have been rtha's 53rd birthday. Come have some food or a drink and hang out and tell stories about rtha or just hang out. I'll be asking for donations in her memory for the Golden Gate Raptor Observatory and the San Francisco Dyke March, two of her favorite organizations. [more inside]

A very low-key social partner dance: easy to try for newbies; traditional energetic as well as modern gentle music for the partner dances; an open-role dance for those who like it. From 7:20-8pm we teach a free lesson for *total beginners* that will get you through Walking That Counts as Dancing, and give you a try at either rotary waltz or polka, which are gloriously whirly. You don't need to dress up or come with a partner. [more inside]

DragonCon 2018 is nigh and the schedule app update is out. Past years have proven that an actual designated time & place for a mefi meetup is logistically unlikely, but, just wanted to open a thread for roll call/friend code exchange/panel postmortems, etc. [more inside]

I'm going to be co-facilitating a couple of sessions at this year's Fast Forward, a three day festival for the anti-authoritarian left that runs from 17th-19th of August. Tickets are between 35-80 depending on ability to pay. It's going to be pretty cool. Food is included, as is childcare (kids go free!). If you're feeling a bit down about the state of politics at the moment, this is a great place to feel hopeful. [more inside]

July 5

Hi! After discussion about the DSA in the politics megathread and some enthusiastic PMs, someone suggested we make an IRL event (thanks bilabial!). This is pretty much what it says on the tin. I've never been to this working group before, so I don't totally know what to expect, but I would be happy to meet up with various MeFites there. This is the DSA's description of the event.
