April 20

Penguicon is a combination scifi convention and open source conference that's been running annually for 15 years. I'm a guest of honor at Penguicon 2017 (my schedule), as is MeFi's own Cory Doctorow (schedule) and Ada Palmer (schedule) whose work's been discussed on MetaFilter several times. Other speakers include MeFi's own John Scalzi. [more inside]

Are any other mefites going to Dapper Day (April 23rd) at Disneyland this year? I thought it might be a neat thing to meet up and grab a bite and see how awesome we all are? [more inside]

February 28

Hi! This is super short notice but I have 2 extra tickets to the Nebraska vs. Minnesota basketball game on Thursday at 6pm. One of the ticket holders has to work and the other is staying in Colombia for an extra few days. Would one or two of you be interested in coming along? They're not the best seats and you'll have to put up with me rooting for Nebraska, but they'd be free! Post here or memail me if you're interested. -Ian

February 7

I'm planning to start protesting outside the White House on my lunch break (which I suppose I will have to start taking). Although this event only specifies February 8th, I'm hoping to go almost every day this week and next. [more inside]

A protest will be held in Paris this Saturday 19 November. Fellow MeFites who want to come: we could all find each other once there. If someone knows the area well (Ecole Militaire) and can suggest a specific spot, that would be great! Be sure to join the Facebook event here. [more inside]

Heya cobbers. We were considering doing a Pokemon meetup and catching of monsters. Lollusc is late to the party and banished to Canberra for a few days so we must soothe her pain upon return. And for the love of dogonthemoon, someone has to help me take down msfish. ( blue team is bad, m'kay.) Open to date , time and venue suggestions although Usyd isn't bad and may be centrally accessible. Can be day with kiddoes or night with boozoes. (Fridays are out as it's often Chaiday Night at my place. To which MeFites have a standing invitation. ) We can all set lures in close proximity and enjoy the sprinkle of soft falling pink bits.. A biology book club I'm part of in Toronto is going to be starting Freeman and Herron's Evolutionary Analysis. We read a chapter of a textbook a month (more or less), and answer the end-of-chapter questions. We also try to find a paper related to the chapter to discuss. Everyone is welcome; when we did Albert's Molecular Biology of the Cell, we had everyone from people who had zero biology background to biology Ph.D.s attend. Sometimes we stick to the subject of the chapter, and sometimes the discussion is wide-ranging. It's held at Toronto's Hacklab, which strives to be an inclusive and welcoming space. [more inside]

I've been spending some time recently at a new co-working and event space called The Outpost, a permanent offshoot of the XOXO Fest that been running in town the last few years. And we're having a big launch party for the space this Saturday starting at 7 p.m., and y'all should come on out! [more inside]

Based on the response to the recent MegaGames post on the Model -U.N.-Meets-Alien-Invasion game "Watch the Skies," I would be remiss if I did not point out that a similar MegaGame, "From Beyond" is playing in Cambridge, MA next week run by MegaGames United.

Costume party at the Bicycle Kitchen! I thought some people might be interested in this. Plus, I'm helping them spread the word. It's a costume fundraiser party with some bands and DJs. The theme is werewolf high school(?). Tickets are $13 suggested donation. Please check out more info of the party. The fundraising is for this project.

August 11

Labor Day weekend is almost upon us again, and that means DragonCon in Atlanta. (Please don't call it Dragon*Con, they had their *-hole removed two years ago at no small expense.) Even though an actual organized MeFi meetup is not likely to survive everyone's various convention plans, we can at least use this thread to talk about those plans. NOTE: like last year, the time and place listed are for the registration line, the event itself lasts Thursday-Monday, and is spread across 5 high-rise hotels and a nearby convention center. June 14

Is anyone else running in the City to Surf this year? I don't know if I'm proposing a meet-up or just a general mutual online support thingo, but I thought it would be nice to compile a list of who's doing it. And maybe we could meet up briefly at the start to wish each other well, or even do a training run together a week or two before if we aren't all vastly different levels. [more inside]

Several West London branches of the LCC are organising leisurely group rides to converge at The Roebuck pub on Richmond Hill. We'll watch the sunset, and then ride back en masse after dark. Groups will leave from departure points in Ealing, Hammersmith, Hounslow [PDF], Wimbledon and other boroughs. Departures vary between 7pm and 8pm, so see links or inside for details. [more inside]
