Playland not at the beach is open Monday to celebrate their 5th birthday, I am in town for a few days, at last the excuse you needed to get over to El Cerrito in the afternoon! Afterwards maybe a visit to some/all of the local brew pubs. There is a tour of Pyramid brewery at 4pm and Triple Rock and Jupiter are an easy BART hop away. [more inside]

Was thinking about proposing a meetup at Supercollider and just saw that Bar Scrawl (previously featured on the blue) did a neat writeup of it. Like Bill Roundy, I got the black hole to drink and it was tasty! They have a happy hour ('til 7, I think) and a cool little rooftop space. RMH August DINNER: We continue to have a great time cooking dinner for people at the Hyde Park Ronald McDonald House (5444 South Drexel Avenue, Chicago, IL) so we're doing it again on 8/31/13 starting around 4:30 and finishing around 8:30. It's like a potluck that we all make together at their kitchen, and also feed families of sick kids. [more inside]

Opening night of Portland's Funniest Person contest, with a lot of the strongest competitors -- the ones who already work at Helium as MCs or features, including Metafilter's own msalt, Gabe Dinger, and Shane Torres. This is a dozen comics doing 5-6 minutes sets of their best material. If you tell them you're a friend of Mark, you can get 2 for 1 tickets (2 for $10). If that's still a bit steep, memail msalt as he has a limited number of free tickets, first come first served.

Doctor Who's Series 7 Finale airs this Saturday, at 8pm. And we're pleased as punch to be able to watch it the Jersey City residence of oh yeah!, dedicated mefite and whovian. Folks can start coming over around 5 just to hang out, maybe watch some classic Doctor Who or whatever folks suggest - the episode starts at 8pm, so aim to arrive around 7:30 for that if possible.
