1945 SE Water Ave, Portland, OR, USA (Map & Directions)
It is 2012! It is January! There should be a thing. The (first decided upon, but we could decide on others, or YOU could, you could just put it out there and see if it'll happen) thing is: OMSI After Dark, January 25, 6-10 PM.

I'm up for 1KBWC, bowling, or general mayhem in February.

I'm up for most things.

On board.

Yes.

Sure!

What sorts of things do people have in mind?

Also, can we define "general mayhem"?
Or would doing so make it less 'general'?
posted by nickthetourist at 9:03 AM on January 2, 2012

I am new to town and am also into things.
posted by jivadravya at 9:53 AM on January 2, 2012

I like things and stuff.

I've got the 1KBWC deck.

I liked playing games at Caldera.
posted by Specklet at 11:21 AM on January 2, 2012

Adding to the suggestions of beer, games, and whatever our definition of "general mayhem" turns out to be ("beer-infused joviality" is my take), I propose a foray to OMSI After Dark.

I second OMSI After Dark.

The motion has been seconded. According to the bylaws of et cetera et cetera, we therefore et cetera et cetera.
posted by curious nu at 3:30 PM on January 2, 2012

All in favor, say Aye?
"AYE!"
All opposed...
"No."
The ayes are above the no's....
posted by Greg_Ace at 4:22 PM on January 2, 2012

I'm bummed I'll have to miss this, two of my favorite things together.
posted by mimo at 7:01 PM on January 2, 2012

Which two things - science and dark? Museums and alcohol? January and Metafilter meetups?

Assuming your comment has something to do with the Jan. 25 date mentioned on OMSI's website, they do this a lot so we could always do the OMSI outing another time.

Or, y'know, the hell with mimo 'cuz it's all about immediate gratification....
posted by Greg_Ace at 7:53 PM on January 2, 2012

I was thinking wine and cheese, but the other things are good candidates as well. Except for January.

Go to OMSI and the hell with me (although I wouldn't call three weeks instant gratification).

Perhaps we could have an Ignoring the Super Bowl party?
posted by nickthetourist at 10:20 PM on January 2, 2012

I usually do that anyway (the ignoring part), so sure, why not?

I usually do that anyway (the ignoring part), so sure, why not?

I have made the proposal.

A gaggle of mefites? At OMSI? AFTER DARK?? Oh my. This should be interesting.
posted by spherical_perceptions at 11:38 AM on January 7, 2012

So far it's a pretty small gaggle...here's hoping more people decide to include themselves!
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:36 PM on January 7, 2012

Lemme make sure I'm reading the page right, because I unfortunately haven't been to an OMSI AD thing yet;
- In the door is $12, wine tasting is + $8
- OR In the door + Body Worlds exhibit is $25 but the wine tasting is still a separate $8

Also seems like they're urging you to get tickets in advance, yeah? So I guess there's at least some chance it sells out at the door.

Assuming I've got that much correct, I'm tenuously in (sounds awesome, January is just a busy month for me so I can't give a for-sure yet), and I'm totally into dipping in to the Body Worlds part.
posted by churl at 1:55 PM on January 7, 2012

I like all of these ideas and propose we do one or more of them.

I've seen Body Worlds so I'll skip that, but it's neat and worth spending a couple slightly weirded-out hours at if you haven't.

I would also really, really enjoy a bowling meetup some time. I don't recall if we've ever done one in Portland. Which is bizarre.
posted by cortex at 9:49 AM on January 8, 2012

Bowling would be fun, I haven't gone in ages. And then of course there's the indoor mini-golf thing, too.
posted by Greg_Ace at 11:26 AM on January 8, 2012

Does anyone have a favorite bowling alley?
posted by mimo at 6:48 PM on January 8, 2012

Hollywood Bowl and Grand Central are the two that I've been too in the last few years and not been at all revolted by.
posted by cortex at 7:56 PM on January 8, 2012

Oh, yeah, I think mini golf needs to be a thing sometime.
posted by Secretariat at 8:28 PM on January 8, 2012

Whenever we drive by Grand Central we think about how great it would be to have a meetup there, so if someone were to suggest it, I'd probably be cool with that.
Same goes for mini-golf.
posted by nickthetourist at 7:54 AM on January 9, 2012

I've set myself a reminder, after the OMSI-AD and Ignore Superbowl meetups are past, to propose a mini-golf meetup. Don't want to get IRL threads too muddled together all at once, eh?
posted by Greg_Ace at 1:28 PM on January 9, 2012

They're opening this excellent-looking mini golf place right near my house in NE, but I'm not sure what date the grand opening is. I also like bowling -- I like Hollywood Bowl (also in my neighborhood) and the AMF place at SE 30th & Powell.

I also suck at bowling though just FYI
posted by churl at 4:16 PM on January 9, 2012

It's possible there are Portland mefites who don't suck at bowling, but I'm not one of them. I enjoy the game either despite or because of how bad I am at it, I'm not really sure.

no expectations = no pressure

beer also helps

BEING UNREADY AND ILL-EQUIPPED IS THE UNIVERSAL PREDICAMENT BUT IT WOULDN'T KILL YOU TO KEEP TO A STEADY PRACTICE SCHEDULE
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:29 PM on January 9, 2012

Fuck it, Mefites, let's go bowling.

I also suck at bowling and am known for a wicked hook. So far, I've never left my own lane though.
posted by mimo at 6:18 PM on January 9, 2012

... and am known for a wicked hook.

So we've heard...

I tried to resist, truly I did
posted by Greg_Ace at 6:40 PM on January 9, 2012

Greg, if you don't stop intimating that I'm a boxing octopus I'm going to have to smack you eight times.
posted by mimo at 7:01 PM on January 9, 2012

smack you eight times

That might not bolster your cause as much as you'd think. And besides, how can you not appreciate the genius of the "hook" pun? Especially now that I've explicitly described it and killed the humor?
posted by Greg_Ace at 8:22 AM on January 10, 2012

So, for those marked as attending and/or maybe attending: who's going to what? Churl laid out the ticket prices there (regular / + Body / + wine) which I didn't even realize when I set the thing up, and that makes everything so complicated.
posted by curious nu at 4:08 PM on January 13, 2012

I'm not super-inclined to spring for the "Body Worlds" exhibit myself, unless everyone or most everyone else wants to - I'm not against it, just indifferent since I spent a fair amount of time in the distant past with Gray's Anatomy (the textbook, not the TV show) and doubt there would be any real surprises or revelations in the exhibit for me. But hey, I could be wrong, so I'll go along with whatever the majority decides.

Once inside, we can pretty much move around at our own speed, in one loose group or smaller clusters or...whatever the hell we feel like, basically. Anyone who springs for alcohol gets a wristband or hand stamp, as I recall, and there are one or two central places to go stand in line for a glass/refill.
posted by Greg_Ace at 5:02 PM on January 13, 2012

I will not be doing Body Worlds, but will be doing the wine/cheese thing.
posted by fiercekitten at 8:48 PM on January 13, 2012

Regular + Wine for me.
posted by nickthetourist at 10:15 PM on January 13, 2012

I think the working assumption should be entry + wine/cheese. I (and anybody who cares) will take the opportunity to check out the Body Worlds exhibit as time allows, but that'll not be a requirement for the meetup. What say ye?
posted by churl at 12:18 AM on January 20, 2012

Yeah, what he said.
posted by nickthetourist at 4:10 PM on January 20, 2012

Sweet, got my tickets
posted by churl at 4:01 PM on January 22, 2012

I would love to attend, but there's no way in ____ that I can make tomorrow evening with the amount of work that I've inflicted upon myself this week. So I'm going to have to bail this time, sorry.

4 of us are here, in line to get in.
Heading to cafe for noms.

We are headed upstairs.

I'm in body worlds, meet you soon
posted by churl at 6:39 PM on January 25, 2012

Now at wine tasting.
posted by nickthetourist at 6:59 PM on January 25, 2012

Since they oversold the wine tasting so badly, I came home with 3/4 of my wine tokens remaining. However I have been using them to purchase glasses of the Pinot Grigio from my refrigerator and I am finding them very much to my liking.
posted by churl at 10:38 PM on January 25, 2012

I was surprised at the number of people.
It goes to show just how much we like science and alcohol, I suppose.
posted by nickthetourist at 8:45 AM on January 26, 2012

How do you figure it will compare to next month, when the topics will be bridges and bacon?
