Boston Meetup One-Two Punch!

Sat February 5 at 7:00 PM, Cambridge Brewing Company
1-2200 Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
Lots of people can't make it out this weekend, so let's do a second one!
All times and places under consideration. We could do something on the Boston side of the river for a change-up.

One idea, which may warrant yet another separate meetup thread: East Coast Grill is hosting Hell Night from February 28 through March 3 if people are interested in destroying their innards with extra-spicy foods.

oh hell (night) yes

Is it too late already though? We best call. I've been meaning to that forever but I always forget. Although if it is too late, I'd be up for waiting on the waiting list...

Hell night?

I get back in town Feb 14 so I'm up for anything after that., innards-destroying or otherwise.

Yay for doing something in Boston! I'm kind of a wuss about spicy food, but I'd be willing to make a sacrifice if it meant (finally) making it to a meet up. Otherwise, I'm free for most of February (except that first week).

Hooray makeup meetup! Cambridge is easier for me to get to than Boston, but if it's near the red line that's a plus.

Also, yeah, what is hell night?
posted by Metroid Baby at 1:55 PM on January 28, 2011

East Coast Grill periodically serves insanely spicy foods, sort of as a dare. Very hot peppers. If you ask for a drink to cool off, the entire restaurant chants "WIMP! WIMP! WIMP!" at you.

I've always wanted to go--but maybe we plan for something else in the spirit of all inclusiveness for wimps, and we could have an offshoot hot it up.
posted by Admiral Haddock at 1:59 PM on January 28, 2011

They start taking reservations for Hell Night on Monday, but I agree it's probably best to host the meetup somewhere else so the wimps everyone can enjoy themselves.
posted by backseatpilot at 2:58 PM on January 28, 2011

Do they have wimpy food available? I love doom-spicy, but there's a very realistic possibility that my intestines will breech my bellybutton, creep up my chest to loop around my neck and slowly choke me to death as retribution for all the misery I've given them over the years. It might be cool to watch, but it would be really messy.

Sad that when someone said Hell Night, I immediately thought of ManRay.... Trying to wrap my mind around East Coast Grill as a Leather Bar for a night was ... well... disturbing...

I'm free during February (if I can ever stop *coughing* that is), but am totally not up for Hell Night in my, er, condition. I can practically taste the heartburn already.
posted by sonika at 11:46 AM on January 30, 2011

How about somewhere near Kendall, then? There's the CBC, Think Tank, and Flattop Johnny's if people want to bail on the whole restaurant idea and shoot pool.
posted by backseatpilot at 2:41 PM on January 30, 2011

I vote for a place that has a food option. Not that I'm too fussy - other than not wanting atomic heartburn that is.
posted by sonika at 2:47 PM on January 30, 2011

Hell Night would sound wonderful to me, except for right now I need to avoid spicy foods. Which is terrible, because I love spicy foods!

If the meet up is Saturday, I can probably make it easily.

If it's Friday and close to after work time (like 6), I could come with Toddler Zizzle in tow if it's a kid-friendly enough place.

Saturday I could probably come solo at nearly any time.
posted by zizzle at 8:07 AM on January 31, 2011

What weekend are we talking about? If it's this coming one (4th-6th) I can probably drop in either Friday or Sunday...or were you thinking later in the month?

All you folks who don't know hell night—here's more info.
posted by dubitable at 9:21 AM on January 31, 2011

I think the original plan was to do it this coming weekend, but if more people are available the 11/12th than I'm sure that would be fine, too.
posted by backseatpilot at 10:23 AM on January 31, 2011

I would do that. Whatever that is.

And however spicy. It's cool, I don't mind meeting new people through a haze of tears and snot.

I'm available any weekend. The 11/12th might be *better* for me as there's a greater chance I will be completely recovered from my plague, but this weekend should be do-able. Unless I come down with yet another plague. I'll stay indoors and wear my plague mask, just to be sure.
posted by sonika at 1:24 PM on January 31, 2011

Perhaps those of us who avoid the spicy could dine at (only moderately spicy) Punjabi Dhaba or (not at all spicy) All Star sandwiches and everyone could have a meetup-meetup at Christina's afterwards for dessert.

But maybe I'm just saying that 'cause I love me some Punjabi Dhaba and Christina's.

And also maybe that's a better idea for a spring/summer meetup.

I'm in for this weekend, although too wimpy for Hell Night. Just listening to my husband describe the food gave me heartburn.
posted by darsh at 2:32 PM on January 31, 2011

Should we say, then, the CBC for this Saturday, with possible expedition to Flattop Johnny's after?
posted by backseatpilot at 4:02 PM on January 31, 2011

I am not at all wedded to the idea of Hell Night, and it is in fact possible that I won't be able to make it anyways this weekend, so do as you will.

In other words, backseatpilot, I think that's a fine idea.
posted by dubitable at 4:05 PM on January 31, 2011

Sounds good to me!
posted by sonika at 4:12 PM on January 31, 2011

Done and done. Do people want dinner? 7-7:30 ok?
posted by backseatpilot at 5:01 PM on January 31, 2011

I will want all of the foods. And 7 is fine.
posted by sonika at 6:18 PM on January 31, 2011

I'll be there too. CBC @7pm Saturday? Do I have that right?
posted by overeducated_alligator at 5:36 AM on February 1, 2011

Let's do that, then. Should I make a reservation for a table?
posted by backseatpilot at 5:49 AM on February 1, 2011

Ooh, I have been meaning to get out to CBC anyway. Count me most likely in for dinner and beer.
posted by little cow make small moo at 6:31 AM on February 1, 2011

What's the proposed timetable? I'd love to join for drinks--is the plan to convene at 7:00 and be seated for dinner immediately? Or will there be some boozing around time before dinner? Alternatively, any ideas when you might adjourn to Flat Top Johnny's? Maybe tweet it?

I have conflicting dinner plans that night! Desolé!
posted by Admiral Haddock at 7:42 AM on February 1, 2011

I'm sure we'll be there for several hours. I think it would probably be best to just try to congregate around the bar and people can grab food as they want so we don't cause too much ire with the waitstaff, but if anyone feels differently we can get a table.
posted by backseatpilot at 8:52 AM on February 1, 2011

I won't be able to sit at a bar, I'll pretty much need a table for my massive bulk.
posted by sonika at 9:48 AM on February 1, 2011

....or we could use you as the table itself.... THANKYOUVERYMUCHLADIESANDGERMS

And sorry, I won't be able to make it to this one. Going to visit my sweetie in VT and go snowshoeing in the forest behind terrapin's place. Last week's meetup was fun though!!

And I would totally be up for a Punjabi Dhaba-to-Christine's meetup once the sidewalks have gained back their normal width. ...I forgot you and I share the same birthday, maryr -- we're gonna have to get bondcliff in on that meetup.

Have fun, kids!

I'm definitely up for at least dinner. I've been mostly lurking here for the better part of seven years and I suppose it's time I actually went to one of these things!
posted by Kosh at 5:37 AM on February 2, 2011

In that case, I'll make a reservation for however many have indicated they're attending with the buttons by Friday afternoon.

Ha, you probably could. Though drinks would likely be toppled by the uterine occupant's constant shenanigans. It's not quite as wild as that "alien fetus" video, but it's pretty damn close. Probably better to have a table that doesn't move around quite so much.

My curse continues. We have party to go to that night. So frustrating - I've been longing for a Boston meetup.

I'm there! Woo!

Me too. Extra-convenient location, even!

Reservations are all set for tomorrow under my last name. If anyone else wants to jump in at the last moment, let me know and I can try to update the reservation.

Dang, I'll be in that part of town too at a dear friend's birthday party. I hope I'll make it to the next one.

Awww man, I just saw this and I'm babysitting tonight. Next time!
posted by athenasbanquet at 6:50 AM on February 5, 2011

Shoot! I just noticed this too! I can't make it tonight.

Are there any Western Mass MeFi's who might be interested in a Meet Up? I'm a little nervous about driving to Boston by myself.
posted by apricot at 7:18 AM on February 5, 2011

Can't make this tonight.

Apricot, I might be up for attending a central Mass meetup some time. I've gone out to Northampton for one. I'm in the 'burbs so driving West on the Pike is often easier than driving into Boston.
posted by bondcliff at 11:32 AM on February 5, 2011

I'd love to attend a central MA meetup...it's a good excuse to do stuff in the region.
posted by Miko at 11:52 AM on February 5, 2011

Ack, not going to make it after all. Turns out I really AM too pregnant to get out of my own way. Hope y'all have a blast!
posted by sonika at 3:02 PM on February 5, 2011

Hey, guys! This place has free wi-fi!
posted by Metroid Baby at 6:43 PM on February 5, 2011

It was nice to meet everyone (though I guess I only really felt like I met my half of the table--hopefully next time we'll be in a place that can move around more!) Glad we had so many braving the surprisingly hazardous walkways around Kendall Square...
posted by Kosh at 7:48 PM on February 5, 2011

It'd be great to start up a monthly or bimonthly (2, no 1/2) meetup tradition. Do we have enough people interested in that?
posted by maryr at 7:59 PM on February 5, 2011

maryr: yes!
posted by Miko at 8:28 PM on February 5, 2011

sure, let's do it.
posted by Kosh at 8:38 PM on February 5, 2011

Yes to more regular meetups. It sounded like there were a decent number of people who were interested in attending one of these two recent ones but couldn't, so I bet there'd be critical mass for another one sometime soon at least.
posted by A dead Quaker at 2:25 PM on February 6, 2011

Clearly we need some legwork to find places a bit more suitable as far as seating. I can't help but cringe every time CBC gets selected - I've always had lousy service there the few times I've gone.

Once the glaciers recede, it will be a lot easier to try out some new spots.
posted by canine epigram at 11:53 PM on February 8, 2011

Once spring/summer comes, we can also have meetups outside - it'd be fun to do a picnic or BYOFood/Beverage. And heck, I'm easily convinced to just stand around eating ice cream.
posted by maryr at 7:16 AM on February 9, 2011

Personally, when warm weather comes I would love an excursion type meetup. Like, to the harbor islands or something? Would combine well with picnicking.
