Gathering in NYC

Sat December 9 at 2:00 PM, Lucky
168 Avenue B, New York, NY, USA (Map & Directions)
The wonderful starlybri was kind enough to organize a recent NYC meet up, and some of us got to talking about how they used to happen more frequently in the city. So overhauser has kindly secured a spot at Lucky's in the East Village for us to gather on Saturday, December 9. The time will be 2-6pm. There will be cheap drinks, and we'd like to do this pot luck style with food!
This is the same day as Santa Con, which is happening more in Midtown. It's two weeks past Thanksgiving and two weeks before Christmas and a few days before the beginning of Hanukkah. So hopefully we can gather without feeling harried by other holiday commitments.

I mentioned at the last meet up that I have lots (and lots) of really hot jalapeño jelly* from this summer's canning efforts. It goes very well with all kinds of things, so I'll bring a few jars of that, and a pot of rice (approximate size determined by expected crowd). There will be drinks at the bar, and of course, please post here what kind of snacks you might bring so we don't end up with 15 bowls of 7 layer dip (per overhauser's request...even though I really like 7 layer dip and would just want to be sure to have enough chips on hand, I can see how variety would be appreciated.)

I know there is often some back and forth about when and where, but this worked out because the bar is booked for several dates surrounding this, the holiday season is upon us, and I was willing to post the event if the details were already worked out. Anxiety, yo, I am here to be a good enough planner, and not a perfect planner. If you can make it, I'll be very happy. If you can't make it, then next time!

*I didn't take the seeds out. I don't generally eat spicy things.

I can't make that date. My fiancee's comprehensive exams are the day before and will be still be recovering. If you move the date,I can probably make it.

I would love to be there, as long as you guys don't mind having a relatively elderly lady showing up.

Yay, it would be great to meet you, holborne! Thanks for coordinating, bilabial!

Dang it. That's my partner's birthday, and we've got opera tickets! Enjoy, though!

I missed the last one but I'm going to try for this one.

Let’s talk about food. Who is excited about jalapeño jelly? Who isn’t? (you won’t hirt my feelings, I just want to know how much to bring!) has jalapeño jelly inspired any recipe hunting?

Is anybody signing up to bring a dessert? Meat things? Vegan things?

Does anybody have any allergies we should know about?

Will the bar be a santa-free zone? My observation from past years is that they go all over the city and not just the places that agree to host them.

I know that some bars out up signs that santas aren’t welcome. I have no idea if our location is amenable to Santa’s. Perhaps overhauser will investigate for us?

I'm at Lucky right now. The owner, Abbey, says no santas, because she was interviewed on television and talked about how bro-frat-terrible it's become and now the Santa con people hate her and the bar. And she won't let them in. She has a circle/slash no Santa sign. Which has been copied-and-pasted All over alphabet city, apparently.

Also, I'm bringing the chocolate chip guacamole and chips I brought to Flavourtown. Which turned out actually tasty! Unless there are objections.

I will try to bake something but work is nuts lately so no promises :(

Yay for absent Santas! Yay for potential baked goods! I'm still planning to bring rice and jalapeño jelly and maybe something else depending on how my week goes (there might be some mid-week stress cooking, and that energy might spill over to Friday).

I'll be there! And thanks for the shout-out bilabial. It's a pleasure hosting meetups (when I can find a place haha) I was actually thinking about doing a potluck thing but didn't inow where to do it so it's awesome this is happening. I'm allergic to nuts, carrots and shellfish. I can bring chocolate chip cookies (nut-free of course).

I don't like jalapenos, so none for me. And I'll also try to bring some Chipotle style tomatillo salsa if it comes out well. Should I bring chips too? Will say if I'm bringing it by Friday.

Question. I had ankle surgery earlier this year so I really can't stand for say more than 5 minutes without being in pain. Will we be able to sit?

I'd make this but just saw it was in the afternoon. Sad to miss out on the jalapeno jelly =( but yeah, if regular meet ups start again, would be happy to attend (I'd organize them except that I have a weird irregular schedule so probably not best for me to determine when to hang out).

Yes, there is a line of bar stools in the front, and some tables and chairs as well as a couch and and a lounge chair in the back. I hope you can come. And I hope your ankle gets better.

Oof, wish I had seen this sooner, since my day is already booked. Next time though!

I’m still very much on the fence of Maybe — I was leery of crossing paths with the Santa-con brigade on the trains, and now the snow forecast, I don’t know.

Still plan to be there but don't think baking is gonna work out, unfortunately.
posted by ferret branca at 11:51 AM on December 8, 2017

No need for baking. I have SO MUCH guacamole.
posted by overhauser at 3:53 PM on December 8, 2017

No need for baking. I’ve got a couple of lemony cookies, some coconut macaroons, and the promised rice with jalapeño jelly.

I just realized I should get paper bowls.

We’ll see what the snow does.

I don't think I'm going to bake either. But I will be bringing salsa and chips!

Can you give a yea or nah for meeting up an hour and a half before 2?
posted by starlybri at 4:40 PM on December 8, 2017

Of course! Just post here. Hopefully we get to see you!
posted by bilabial at 4:55 PM on December 8, 2017

Starlybri, I just found out I can come, too, and I am ALSO allergic to nuts so we can chat about allergies (and maybe I can has some of your cookies...?). See you tomorrow!

I am hoping to be there! Will prob bring a vegetable/fruit plate.

I'm going to try and make it, but no guarantees. The A train is shut down up here, which makes me lose motivation.

If anyone is in Brooklyn and can't make it to this event, but still is able to get around and wants to do something anyway:

I'd picked today to do my own small party with friends, who are having their own difficulties getting around, so I may find myself with 3 pounds of bratwurst, 6 kinds of cookies and lots of cheese and only one or two people to help me eat it. If you are in Northern Brookyn and can't make it to Manhattan for this, memail me.

(Ordinarily I wouldn't have piggybacked like this but I'm a little panicked because THREE POUNDS OF BRATWURST)
posted by EmpressCallipygos at 9:19 AM on December 9, 2017

Can I come after? I will surely eat your cheese.
posted by starlybri at 9:40 AM on December 9, 2017

Leaving now. I'm trekking to the post office to try and get a package, so I'll probably arrive closer to 2.30. Hopefully you folks with be readily identifiable.
