Meetup at Southpoint Mall!
posted April 20, 2017 5:54 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sat May 13 at 1:00 PM, Southpoint Mall Food Court
6910 Fayetteville Rd, Durham, NC, USA (Map & Directions)
Inspired by the Southpoint side-convo in this post on the blue - let's have a meetup at The Streets at Southpoint!
The Food Court has American Meltdown and Porchetta as well as the usual mall food court mainstays. Sadly the Belgian Waffle truck no longer has a stall there.

Preferences for dates? Brunch, lunch, or dinner?

Hall massages optional.

I'm up for that, depending on scheduling.

Haha, this is so random! But I live not far from there so I am up for this! When did the waffle place close???

Just steer me away from the Apple store and I'm up for it.

Ha! This is delightful. I should be back in the area later in the summer, like August. I realize that's probably farther out than what you're planning here. I'll stay tuned to see if it's a date I can make.

lol Southpoint. Ignignokt and I will be in town over Mother's Day weekend and could possibly do a meetup there and then, because that's the only place in Durham I remember how to drive to.

My teenage daughter is going to laugh so hard when I tell her that I am going to the mall with my friends.

No love for CHINA MAX? Come on guys!

May 13th?

A Mother's Day meetup at a shopping mall food court would be hilarious.

I'm surprised nobody's suggested Cheesecake Factory.
posted by research monkey at 1:16 PM on April 21

I could do the 13th!
posted by leesh at 2:05 PM on April 21

I can also do the 13th! I don't know why I got an extra little thrill at the mention of the Cheesecake Factory? But Porchetta is a much more realistically good idea. Maybe we could head to the CF after for dessert.

13th is good.

Barnes and Noble is quietish and cafe-like, but less like a classic 80s mall experience.

I'm going to propose May 13. But what time? Preferences?
posted by research monkey at 11:43 AM on April 22

My vote is for early afternoon, like 1 PM. Although I'm free all day so other times are not a problem.

Incidentally there's a Sam's Bottle Shop not far away, if folks want to go out for post-meetup beers.

May 13th may work, my son has a track meet that day and the schedule hasn't been nailed down yet. Would love to meet some of my fellow MeFites. Thanks research monkey for getting this rolling.
posted by skepticbill at 6:54 PM on April 22

I would likely go to this too! I have gotten food from that Porchetta kind of often considering I just moved to Durham last fall. The 13th works for me.
posted by bananana at 7:47 AM on April 23

That's a 10 hr roundtrip for me (I'm in Asheville) so, sadly, I won't be there. I'll get to meet some MeFites one of these days.
posted by MovableBookLady at 11:47 AM on April 23

I'll be at my sister's bachelorette party in Asheville that weekend. One day the dates will work out and I swear I will make it to a meet-up again, guys. It's been way too long.

I'll come if the time suits. Right now all times are equally good. :)

May 13th will work for me.

May 13th is fine for me, too.

Dang it, I'm heading out of town that very day for a two-week vacation with my mom.

So, once again, all these years later, my mom won't allow me to hang out at the mall with my friends. Sigh.

Sorry to miss it, y'all.

I might actually make it.

Things I do at the mall: look at Land's End clothes at Sears; return mail-order Land's End clothes to Sears; by a bun at Cinnabon; look at boots at Nordstrom but never buy any; look at glasses at LensCrafters; buy inexpensive glassware at the new kitchen store outside on the "Streets" section; look at stationery at Barnes and Noble but never buy any; go to the movies.

Heh. The Sur La Table has been there since late 2012, so it's funny to see it referred to as "the new kitchen store" - although it is new compared to the Williams-Sonoma and Crate & Barrel also at the mall.

We tend to walk to the mall when we're out of ideas for dinner. Then it's examining the specials at Porchetta and American Meltdown, and getting something at one or both, or heading over to the Nordstrom Cafe Bistro if we're in a more let's chill out kind of mood. Then browse at Williams-Sonoma, and check out their clearance section for anything interesting. Ditto Sur La Table and Crate & Barrel. Although I inevitably end up buying something at Crate & Barrel.

We gawk at I-40 traffic as we walk on the American Tobacco Trail pedestrian bridge on the way to or from the mall. The stretch of the trail from Rt. 54 to the mall is quite busy in the evening, and one does have to stay alert for packs of cyclists and runners.

I go to the mall fairly often to hit Lush (and occasionally Sephora) so now I need to work on my shopping lists! Yay for yummy face washes and grilled cheese sammies!

I'm in! (providing work doesn't send me elsewhere that weekend!)

I'm out of town. :( Have fun!

Ahh, damn. I'll be in Greensboro for my (Grand)mother's Day BBQ. Maybe next time!

Oh hey! This would be fun! I have some folks in town that weekend that might need my attention, but if not I'm in!

I think we can make it! We might be a bit late depending on kid naptime.

OK so where exactly are we meeting? It's going to be pretty crowded.
posted by wens at 4:30 AM on May 12

The spread of tables at the food court is pretty vast, I'm not worried about finding enough contiguous space for all of us. The only real problem is that this far in advance we can't say "the block of tables to the left of the Haagen Daz" because when the first of us get there, hey, somebody else might already be sitting there.

So let's instead say that we'll try to squat some tables in the general area in front of the BUILT burger space that's still under construction. (It's the only space that's under construction). Might not be directly in front of it, but start looking for us there. We'll update this thread if we have to move.

Anybody who prefers voice/text to web when they're mobile, memail me and I'll give you my phone number.

I'm excited! Yay!

I'll definitely be there with my greatly amused teen daughter in tow. We may be a bit late, but we will be there.

Mefites and marble soap trays!
posted by oceanjesse at 9:03 AM on May 13

We're squatting a table in front of Subway which is next to the Built thing. Might relocate if a bigger spread opens up.

I'm in a red plaid long sleeve shirt, needled is wearing a heather grey teeshirt. Further updates as events warrant.

It was great seeing all the folks who showed up!

Anybody planning to check out the GeekCraft Expo at the Durham Armory tomorrow?

That was great! Thanks, Durham crew, you're all incredibly friendly! If you're in Boston, you should go to our meetups!

Argh, sorry everybody! I was all ready to go today when a work thing came out of nowhere. Glad it went well, though!
posted by carsondial at 7:27 PM on May 13

Great to meet everybody! Hope we can do it again soon!

carsondial: No worries, there will be more of these. For all we know the next one might be at the Crabtree Valley Mall.

Maybe we can sneak down to the Raleigh Underground.

Good to see y'all!
