Post Colbert/Stewart rally meetup

Sat October 30 at 4:00 PM, Irish Times
14 F St NW, Washington, DC, USA (Map & Directions)
I have bad luck with these, but here it goes: Any MeFites who are going to be at the DC rally are invited to coalesce at Kelly's Irish Times after the official events end (about 4:00-Whenever (It's across the street from Union Station.))

Remotest of possibilities here.

Just to be clear this is the same as the other meetup that was proposed earlier over here yes:

OK.

I'm super excited for this obviously, the rally, the irish times, and the whole thing. Up With Sarcasm Or Whatever!

Well stewriffic you won't be alone. I am bringing my mom.

The BF and I are staying in Baltimore, but are planning to hang out in DC for a while after the rally - we're so in. Well, I'm in and am going to be dragging him along with me. See you guys there!

Yeah, I thought that was more a see-if-there's-interest thing. But same deal.

I may come -- I'm going with some non-mefite friends, so it'll have to be a group decision... but hopefully!

Ditto, Solon and Thanks. We're rolling into the city at around 6am, after an overnight bus trip. So it's possible that a post-rally, pre-prandial nap might win out.

Might I suggest that anyplace remotely near the mall is going to be mobbed with people?
posted by schmod at 9:45 PM on October 25, 2010

Hmm. Does anyone have a floor I can crash on, on Friday night? (I'm not staying Saturday night.) I promise that I'm really nice and I won't get in your way. MeMail if you can help me out!

I may be coming to this as well, but I'm bringing my dad and sis along so if they want to get back in time it may be hard to make this.

In addition if DC or visiting folks want to come to a house party that night, i'm throwing a rock and roll house party starring (former) awesome MeFite ludwig_van's band: Steve Goldberg and the Arch Enemies!

I'll be there. Never been to a mefi meetup before, should be a fun day!

Post-rally won't work for us either, but we're up for meeting on the mall before or during the rally as well.
posted by arabelladragon at 4:49 AM on October 28, 2010

I would advise anyone who would like to meet at the rally to find a very, very specific time/place to meet. For example: 10am, next to the old engraved IRS sign, outside Federal Triangle metro station. Because it would be safe to assume complete chaos for the event itself. Whatever you do, pick a different spot than the Smithsonian metro station exit, because that's where everyone else will be attempting to meet.

what we can't meet at the top of the stairs at the metro entrance? that would be such a good place
posted by ShawnString at 11:01 AM on October 28, 2010

I'll be there (I've got an obligation right before and a little bit after the rally a block away, so it'd be stupid of me not to.)
posted by Navelgazer at 11:31 AM on October 28, 2010

Has anyone figured out where they will approach the event? Are you bringing signs? Colbert fans, are you wearing Halloween costumes?

Met someone there in the middle of a snow storm last winter. Hundreds of bewildered zombie tourists were milling haphazardly about, but at least there was a muddy ice pathway to slip on.

K. I'll be there with a reddit polo and a straw fedora (Weather permitting.)
posted by ChurchHatesTucker at 5:06 PM on October 28, 2010

I will be there in a crowd of folks in business suits waving large green signs saying "Legalize Pot". I can't stay for the meetup, alas.

Will attempt to come with my underage girlfriend (who won't order any beer!). If they kick us out, I'll just politely leave.
posted by mccarty.tim at 3:05 PM on October 29, 2010

Wife and I will be there. Tim, if you can't get into Kelly's we'll be happy to give you and GF the quick five-and-ten-cent around the Union Station/Capitol area.

Hatefully, I don't have internet, but gingerbeer and eideteker have my phone number.

Well just about to start heading out. Will try to make it (crowds all depending) I will be wearing a shirt with "flag it and move on". Hope to see ya

Ok so is there any confirmation on a during-the-event meetup?

I think the only plan is to join mefites if you recognize them. (And I guarantee you won't be the only ones "from the Internet," so don't be shy!)

I'm wearing my "ride more than you drive" tshirt, a camo hat, and carrying a black sign that says "What's Your Sign?"

Ergh, change of plans here: we overslept and now Metro is FUBAR so we're staying home in the boonies. One of those days I wish I still lived beside Union Station. Have fun down there and see you on the internet.

I was also at Woodley Park, took the bus walked through the crowds and enjoyed the atmosphere. Currently outside Kelly's. The whole area is crawling. This is crazy (but in a peaceful way).

Yes we are still here. Come on down

Wow, what a logistical nightmare. Apparently our "drive down to a Metro station and hop a train" plan was woefully short-sighted. Parking lots were full up, and lines for the tickets were nuts.

Ended up driving down and parking a mile from the event and walking. Lost one of our group in the crowd, and had a hard time finding one who was meeting us. Cell phones were mostly useless anywhere approaching the stage area.

So, never made it to the Times (but the one we lost did--she just didn't realize that was the meetup place I had mentioned!)

Finally got everyone sorted and just headed back out. Still had a good time due to the general awesomeness of the crowd.

Was great to see you all, and to finally meet Stewriffic and Eideteker. Sad to know that asavage was in town and didn't show. Sorry I had to leave so quickly, but good times.

Well, I didn't manage to see a lick of the rally, despite being in the general vicinity. Spent too* much time trying to find gingerbeer.

Nonetheless, I had a blast. Needed a sign so picked up a Vote 19 one with a big cannabis leaf on it, since I thought it might help me find people if I had a sign. Ended up meeting the founder of NORML, which was interesting. Not my pet cause, but it doesn't conflict with my values, either. Bizarre, really!

So then I got bored and walked up to the meetup place, stopping along the way to beg the red bull people to pass me a freebie through the fence where their hawkers were stocking up. Not that I'm huge into red bull, but omg was I thirsty by that point.

Thought I'd be the only one there, but ended up having SO MUCH FUN!! The place was slammed and I ended up with free food that came after everyone else's by about an hour. My friend took a bunch of pictures and I may post them once i get back to having actual internet on demand instead of having to go to starbucks.

GREAT to meet everyone. My gosh I like meetups.

*Not enough, is more like it, since I never found her.

Wonderful to meet you all as well. Saw a real life setup for a joke "George Washington, a vampire and a Leprechaun walk into a bar…" (ok it really was Captn Crunch, Count Chocula and The Lucky Charms Leprechaun).
Stewriffic you really need to get your friend on Mefi. She would be a great addition. Posted the few pics I took.
posted by ShawnString at 7:44 AM on October 31, 2010

Waaah, we missed all but 1% of the rally. We saw a bunch of cool people, though, including a Lady Gaga cosplayer who looked exactly like the real thing. Were it not for the lack of bodyguards (although she did have a big group of friends), I'd have been fooled.

Anyway, I'm now trying to cheer her up. Hopefully, I can finangle some tickets to the Daily Show/Colbert Report. Failing that, I'll bake her some cookies and bring over a torrent of the rally.

Pardon my wet blanketness. Got tix to the Colbert Report!

Yeah, Colbert! If you guys have time to wait around, Colbert tapings are awesome! Plus, we got to see the Hobby Hovel up close! We nearly got glitter on our faces! And the warmup guy was actually funny!

Alright guys - so there was $64 left on the table when Stewriffic and crew left... It turns out that getting the bill was just as hard as getting service all afternoon. I couldn't believe that the money left was the tip, and didn't want someone random (like another patron) to glom it off the table - so I took it and we walked out on the tab. I feel awful about that last part, but we could not have waited any longer.

I don't want to keep the money - it's not mine. I will gladly mail you back your dollars, mail them to the bar, or donate them to the preservation of the National Mall. Your call.

posted by ChurchHatesTucker at 2:32 PM on November 4, 2010

You should probably mail it to Kelly's along with an explanation. You can do that anonymously if you're worried about prosecution.
posted by anotherpanacea at 5:40 PM on November 4, 2010

Yeah, mail it to the bar.
