Game Day at Jessamyn's (MoMu)
posted June 28, 2014 12:37 PM   RSS | iCal | +googleCal

Sat July 19 at 1:00 PM, Jessamyn's Summer Place
778 Main Road, Westport, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
MeFi is 15. I have hot dogs. You have games. Let's hang out in a shady spot by a big table and not let our pale skin get all blotchy in the direct sunlight.
There are two possible weekends and two days in each weekend. Possible dates for me: July 12, 13, 19 or 20th. Any of those work better than any others? This is more of a one-day than a weekend thing but if people need to crash there we can accommodate, probably.

I'll provide dinner-ish stuff (grilled something, let me know about food preferences) you bring snacks and drinks. Looking forward to seeing people.

Please note: Address on map is not actual address. Contact me if you need the actual address.

I think I'm free either weekend, no real preference. Also happy to drive folks from Camberville.

Oh! And I made an impulsive purchase of a kubb set, so I will bring that.
posted by backseatpilot at 3:46 PM on June 28, 2014 [1 favorite]

Definitely up for this, but will have to wait for Horace Rumpole's input on what Saturday he is working in July.

I just bought Alhambra, which I've only played once, but it was a lot of fun, and much quicker than Tammany Hall!
posted by DiscourseMarker at 4:36 PM on June 28, 2014

I'm interested. Saturday is probably better than a Sunday, and the 19th is probably better than the 11th. But really I could finangle any of those dates so whenever everyone else is free is a-ok by me.
posted by Aznable at 5:25 PM on June 28, 2014

I would totally be up for this but I'll be away during all those dates. Darn it!

This is when I always go away, which now that I think about it is the reason I missed all the ten year celebrations. Why couldn't MeFi have been started in March?

Maybe I should have a 15th anniversary meetup in rural Quebec. Poutine for all!

I'm in pending transportation, which I can probably procure from backsestpilot it seems.

Uh, sorry, I gotta go. the groomsman is about to take his pants off so they can put the garter on him for ten years good luck.
posted by maryr at 6:10 PM on June 28, 2014

The 19th is probably better for me by a hair, so if DM and HR can do that date, let's call it and get down to planning details about snacks! Let us know when you know!
posted by jessamyn at 6:33 PM on June 28, 2014

I and the ever-lovely SO are in. I can provide transport and =perhaps= lodging for game-addicted regulars without either in the greater RI/South Shore MA area.

This sounds like the kind of thing I'd do.

The 19th should work for me--I'm in!
posted by Horace Rumpole at 11:56 PM on June 28, 2014 [1 favorite]

Interested -- Saturdays better than Sundays, no particular preference about the weekend.
posted by GenjiandProust at 6:24 AM on June 29, 2014

Okay, the 19th it is. Confirming. Here's my basic thought.

- come by at 1-ish, after lunch
- we'll have snacks and drinks and music, some lame games (so bring the good ones) and a lot of tables and chairs
- we'll have some sort of grilled dinner (let me know if you have food restrictions) in the 6-7 area. Rain plan is order some pizzas or you'll all eat quinoa and chourico and like it

I'll send the address to anyone who doesn't have it, but the place is on Main Road in Westport MA and I think most of you have been there. If the weather is nice traffic may be annoying, so be forewarned. Looking forward to seeing everyone.
posted by jessamyn at 6:33 AM on June 29, 2014

I'm in. Do please send me the address. Any special game requests from anyone? What do people like to play?
posted by Aznable at 8:26 AM on June 29, 2014

Sent info to the email in your profile, if that's not a good one, email me with a better one.

I like shorter (30-45 min) games that you can play and chitchat during. I really liked Qwirkle from the last meetup and funky path and tile games. I also love Kubb so there may be some outdoor kubb-play but it will not be mandatory.
posted by jessamyn at 9:30 AM on June 29, 2014

Yay! Also, HR and I can provide a ride for 2-3 people from the general Cambridge area if needed.
posted by DiscourseMarker at 10:21 AM on June 29, 2014

Got the address. I'll scour my collection for funky path and tile games.

If anyone else in the central CT area wants to come and would like to car pool, drop me a line.

Can I RSVP as a maybe, even though it's probably a pie-in-the-sky, not-actually-gonna-happen sort of maybe? Because this sounds like such a wonderful meetup and right up my alley, even though it's not right up the street from me.
posted by ocherdraco at 6:16 PM on June 29, 2014

Sure. There will be folks coming from the Providence area so there's a possibility of a get-a-ride-from-the-train sort of situation.

Salad would be awesome. There's a big kitchen, so totally okay to bring stuff and prepare on-site if that's easier. I am really hoping we can get special guest appearance by My Sister who is not only totally great but an amazing cook. Yay everyone, this will be fun.

If I have the time on Friday, I'll make the chutney. (Don't believe that 30 minute estimate on the website - charring all those peppers on the stovetop takes a long time. Doing it on the grill takes about three minutes, so maybe I'll find an excuse to light that up for dinner Friday.)
posted by backseatpilot at 7:01 AM on July 16, 2014

I will be bringing blueberry bars, although now I am tempted to make ambrosia.

I'll also be bringing MeFi manicure supplies (I think I have an acceptable blue, green, white, maybe gray?, and I bought a yellow pen thing. And sparkles, of course)
posted by maryr at 8:16 AM on July 16, 2014

I have gray if we're doing this MeFi manicure thing (though drying nails make games and snacks kinda difficult). Also white glitter for special snowflakes.

I don't know what to bring. Do people like soda? I can bring a case of Hosmer if that's the sort of thing that might be in need.

It's a 2 hour drive for me, so I suppose it might not be a bad idea to reserve a crash spot if things go super late. If that's ok.
posted by Aznable at 9:12 AM on July 16, 2014

Crash spot reserved. I like soda. I'm a diet soda person so if you could tuck in a few of those (or some seltzers) I'd be super pleased. Will email you directions/info.

OK I have gone shopping and am now done shopping. House has

- hot dogs, not dogs, buns, condiments
- a lot of little bags of random chips
- iced tea and coffee, seltzer, Fresca, diet coke-ish drink, milk, a few beers, some liquor, some wine
- peppers and onions, apples
- cheddar cheese and crackers
- random popsicles
- marshmallows

My sister is on call with the MA State Police so will not be joining us which is a huge bummer. Feel free to toss any more questions my way. Look forward to seeing people on Saturday.

I have received word that there will be bocce, and possibly croquet. The lawn is huge, so multiple games can be held simultaneously. Bocce vs. Kubb! Also, there are frogs in a pond, so many games of "spot the frog" can be played. If anyone has a frisbee, feel free to bring it -- the lawn is that big.

I have browned the butter for the cookies I'm going to try out on you. I think I have an aerobie, for slightly reduced risk to MeFi-manicures. Though for unimpeded snacking, a MeFi pedicure sounds better.

I think I have bocce too, in case we might need an extra. And two bottles of Hopsters beer that a firm seeking my patronage just sent me in a fancy clever box. Apparently, one is for right-brained thinkers (a coffee & cocoa infused stout), and the other for left-brains (a vanilla ale). They suggest a black & tan for balance.

I will probably check this thread when I wake up and then not return to it. People who need to get ahold of me can text my cell at 508-415-XXXX and I can fill in blanks or give extra information. Driveway is smallish so if you arrive early and think you may need to leave early, you may want to park on the street so as not to get parked in. The door right next to the garage door is the Greg Brady room and not the house, go through the doorway to the right of that and you'll find people. Anyone who needs/wants to stay over can be accommodated. Really looking forward to seeing everyone.
