Bring Your Hustle: Boston Pool and Brews Meetup?

Sat November 23 at 3:30 PM, Flat Top Johnny's
1 Kendall Square, Cambridge, MA, USA (Map & Directions)
Backseatpilot, Horace Rumpole and I had such a good time playing pool at the last meet up that I thought I'd see if there'd be any interest in having another with that in mind. Anyone else down for a couple games of 8 ball?
Flattop Johnny's in Kendall is the first option that comes to mind --- they have quite a decent beer list, IMO --- but am very open to suggestions. When would be a good time for people?

YES! I've got a killer break but no aim otherwise.

Killer, glad there's some interest. Big question is, do we go for before Thanksgiving or after? It's late this year.

I would mostly like attend and play pool badly, then make fun of other people for playing pool badly. But with love, I tell you, with love.

I am quite interested. My suggestion for a time would be a weekend afternoon like we did with the bowling--I would imagine the evenings are their busy time.

I don't play pool but I'm close to Kendall and like beer so this seems like the sort of thing I would enjoy anyway.

I will once again become increasingly agitated as physics denies me my glory.

I could probably do the weekend before Thanksgiving or just about any time after.
posted by backseatpilot at 3:48 PM on November 2, 2013

I'm happy with the weekend before thanksgiving as well -- does that work for other people? Flat Top Johnny's opens at 3PM on Saturdays --- I'm thinking maybe 3:30?

If this seems okay to people, I can go ahead and add the venue and stuff up top --- don't know about y'all, I never seem to see the proposed events until they have been confirmed.

Seems good to me! I got a notice about this meetup via memail, BTW.

I'm not sure if I would play, but I'd at least sit back and observe while eating nacho wets or whatever. Maybe if there's a super-remedial-class what's-the-stick-called-again game I'll play!

I'll show up if I'm not scheduled to work then, for sure!

Nacho wets?

That's what it says on the menu. They seem like nachos with fries instead of chips, which sounds pretty good to me, plus the Apple Cabin-esque name is a bonus.

It is officially ridiculous that this is my 7th month living in the area and I have not yet been to a meetup. I will be fixing this and making up for my laxity by playing comically terrible pool in public.

Interesting. I'm actually going to be in Massachusetts that weekend. Hmm.

Hello, everybody --- noticed we added a few more folks to the maybe side. If we end up with 10+ people, I'm thinking it might be wise to get a reservation? I called the venue and they have an online system for this, but before I go ahead and make one I wanted to get some feedback on two points:

1) It seems Flat Top Johnny recently expanded their opening hours. Would starting earlier make it easier for people, or is 3:30 still good?
2) How many tables should I reserve? It seems like there's 4-6 of us definitely up for a few rounds and several more who might like to give it a go but wouldn't play all afternoon or anything. So I'd think two tables for sure, but should I go for three?

Consider me an "almost certainly" for food and drinks.
posted by martinX's bellbottoms at 3:34 AM on November 13, 2013

I'm flexible on time - 3:30 is still fine with me.

I think I'd start with two tables, that way people can take turns playing matches and still have some time to sit and chat. I have no idea how busy they get on Saturday afternoons, though, if we need to expand at all.

By the way, I posted pics from the Bowling meetup.

Moved myself to yes if that helps.

I went ahead and booked two tables at 3:30 for now. I'll check in now and again and the numbers change much by the middle of next week I'll go ahead and add another.

I have to count myself out due to some last minute family obligations. Have a blast, and I really will make it down eventually!
posted by amelioration at 6:30 PM on November 16, 2013

how much does the pool cost, apart from discretionary consumption of delicious nachoid items?
posted by threeants at 11:06 PM on November 17, 2013 [2 favorites]

I believe it is $12 an hour for each table, but I will double-check. If we end up having ~10 people and playing for a few hours, should be in the range of $7-$10 bucks a person.

I am really bummed to have to write this, but I am feeling a touch under the weather. I'm going to play it by ear and if I feel better tomorrow I'll still plan on coming, but in case I'm not able to make it tomorrow, I should probably change the reservation to someone else's name? Horace or Backseatpilot, would that be okay with one of you?
posted by Diablevert at 5:15 AM on November 22, 2013

So sorry you're not feeling well. I am still definitely going and if you want to give them my name that's totally fine.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 6:20 PM on November 22, 2013

Sorry, family stuff, I will be a "no". Have fun!
posted by maryrussell at 4:38 AM on November 23, 2013

Is this still on? I'll be there if so!
posted by threeants at 9:18 AM on November 23, 2013

Yup!
posted by Horace Rumpole at 9:23 AM on November 23, 2013

Is the name it will be under Horace Rumpole?

Horace Rumpole

is that real

I'm not sure whether Diablevert has updated the reservation or not, but I doubt there are too many groups that have a reservation at 3:30 for two tables. I look just like my profile picture, so look for that guy.
posted by Horace Rumpole at 10:04 AM on November 23, 2013

In aid of Horace-recognizing, I will be wearing a sweater which is the color of Metafilter.

I'll probably be kinda late.

Ignignokt and I are yeses! I am not sure how on time or late we will be, but probably reasonably on time.

Horribly late, but en route.

I'm here!

Photos added. That was great and we should definitely do it again when Diablevert doesn't have the flu. Feel better soon!

So glad it all went well. I left a message to switch the reservation, but it looks like there were plenty of empty tables as it was.

Bummed i missed it. Did spend about 16 out of 24 hours asleep yesterday, though, which was nice. I shall return to the field of battle in the New Year, count on it.
posted by Diablevert at 7:35 AM on November 24, 2013 [1 favorite]

That was my first time there and I was pleasantly surprised. The tables were all in good condition, good beer list, surprisingly good food, and it was quiet enough to have a conversation!
posted by backseatpilot at 11:54 AM on November 24, 2013 [1 favorite]

Yeah, it was shockingly quiet, and pool itself was much more engrossing and entertaining than I remember. Also, it was nice to talking to other people who's minds have also been ruined by the doge meme. It was good times!
