Does MeFi Want to Go to the Magic Castle in Hollywood?

Sat October 23 at 7:00 PM, The Magic Castle
7001 Franklin Ave, Los Angeles, CA, USA (Map & Directions)
Magical MeFi! MeFi is going to the world famous Magic Castle in Hollywood.
Feedback indicated that weekends were best for folks and I've selected this date based on my travel schedule.

Saturdays are usually the busiest night, but there's still plenty of fun to be had. The Hat & Hare and WC Fields bars are both open and provide a decent amount of extra space for a group of folks. Of course you're welcome to queue up for the shows in the rest of the castle or simply roam the property checking out the atmosphere.

There is a cover charge ($20) for guests and it's a cash bar. The dress code is serious business (jacket & tie for the masculine among us, evening wear for the feminine - no jeans, sneakers, etc). 21 & Up only. Sadly, there is no photography permitted within the castle and this is strictly enforced.

We'll need to meet at the door and enter together. I've listed 7pm for time as I think the earlier we're there the easier it will be for folks to see the shows they are interested in. If you can't make it at this time I'll need your real name to leave at the host stand and they should still allow you in. If you do not enter with me or provide your name to me you will not be permitted entrance.

My partner and I will be going regardless of whether anyone joins us, but if there are more than 8 other people coming I'll need to provide them a list in advance so if you'd be a dear and memail me if you plan to attend I can make sure everyone who wants to go can go. Thanks!

Hell yes! Weekends work better for me, but woo!

Sounds good to me, too. Weekends are better.

This sounds like a great plan! Weekends are better for me.

Great. Glad to hear there is some interest. I'm about to leave for a European trip but I'll think about scheduling something for the weekend of the 22nd/23rd/24th. Generally Friday/Saturday are the hardest nights to get into shows without the benefit of tickets, which come with dinner. However if you all don't mind queuing you'll be fine, I'm sure.

So now the question is - Friday the 22nd, Saturday the 23rd or Sunday the 24th?

Um, that's obviously October 22nd, 23rd or 24th - sorry.

Holy shazzam, this looks like a blast. I'd love to go too!

Also, this part of the dress code is, er, intriguing:
Leather jackets (with buttons) and leather pants are allowed.

I can do Sunday.

I know, right? And hello - "jeweled collars"!?

Saturday or Sunday work for me.

Okay, I've updated with the date of Saturday the 23rd. Please see the main post for more detail. Looking forward to it!

Oh, man. I have a wedding to go to that day/night. Sad AG is sad.

Dang it, my second surgery is the 22nd. Have lots of fun (and stiff Manhattans) for me! And this is a great idea for a meetup -- hope we do it again down the road when I won't have to consider sneaking out of Cedars-Sinai to attend! (Are hospital gowns considered up to the dress code?)

This sounds cool!

I'm wondering if there is both a cover and a minimum. The website says all guests must have dinner (and the menu says $15 minimum excluding drinks).
posted by mandymanwasregistered at 12:22 AM on September 28, 2010

AG & scody - sorry you won't be able to make it. Another time, perhaps.

mandymanwasregistered - no. Because you'll be accompanying me there is no dinner required, nor is there a minimum. In actuality, my understanding is the first 8 folks don't have to pay a cover. HOWEVER - the only time I've brought people with me thus far there was a cover charged for my guests. So I wanted to put that out there as a real possibility. So, to summarize: likely cover - once that's paid you can either drink or not. You can also order from the bar menu for food stuffs, but dinner reservations are not being made for this evening.

If you're jonesing for a dinner experience here just let me know and I'll set you up with a pass/invite for another night. Dinner and the cover would be required in such a case.

I'm in! Hooray!

So, dress code: No jeans for guys, right? But suit jacket, tie and button up is fine with some khakis, right?

My girlfriend's worries that the female dress code wants her in full evening gown and everything. A business-appropriate skirt and blouse is OK, right?
posted by klangklangston at 6:42 PM on October 5, 2010

Ooooohhhh, I'm jealous! I've wanted to go there since I was little and it was magicians only.

Have fun!
posted by brujita at 8:48 PM on October 5, 2010

klangklangston - I'm not 100% on the khakis. I've never seen a pair of khakis while I've been there. Mostly it's suits or slacks and jackets (which is what I wear). I'd say it complies with the letter of the dress code though. But if you want to be 100% certain maybe ring them up to double check. As for your girlfriend, no - a full evening gown is not required. There will, undoubtedly be one or two women in in such gowns, but most women will be in a tea dress or cocktail dress of some sort.

If you Google "Magic castle" and flip to images you see plenty people posed for pictures out front or in the foyer and you can get an idea of what people have worn there. (and having just done that I did find one guy in khakis!)

I'd rather go to Magic Castle with y'all than my college reunion...alas, the plans have been made. Have a great time, everyone!

Went there for the first time earlier this year. If I get the night off from doing stills for a friend's documentary I'll be there!

Just wanted to let you all know that we are looking so forward to this! If you haven't sent me your real name(s) this is a reminder to do so soon, please and thank you.

Ladies and Gents!

I just sent MeMail confirmation messages to all of you that have sent me your names and as luck would have it that list matches up perfectly with the list of folks who have indicated they are going here. Hurrah!

If for some reason you haven't received said message please let me know. Thanks!
posted by FlamingBore at 10:16 PM on October 20, 2010

That was fairly epic. Thank you so much for inviting me/us, FlamingBore.
posted by carsonb at 2:08 AM on October 24, 2010

I'm glad you had a good time! Hope everyone else did too.

It was also fairly chaotic and despite my best efforts to get smaller bills so that I could redistribute the left over cover charges I failed to do so. So if you want to send me a paypal address or a snail mail address I'll gladly send you a few bucks.

And if any of you would like to return to the castle some time just let me know. I'll hook you up with a guest pass.

Thanks for a lovely evening! I dunno about everyone else, but since I was prepared to fork over $20/person to get in, I'm not super worried about getting those extra dollars back. If you really want to, you can buy us a cheap drink at the next meet up or something!
