Wed August 29 at 3:00 PM, Dust & Stars - 2:45 and Foxglove
E, Black Rock City, NV, USA (Map & Directions)
Let's have another midweek Metafilter meetup on the playa this year!
We'll be meeting up at changeling's camp, Dust & Stars, at 3 PM on Wednesday. The camp is located at 2:45 and Foxglove (despite the pin on the map up there - turns out it's suprisingly tricky to get Google maps to accurately pinpoint locations in BRC!)

I've got tickets but I'm not committed to going yet (depends on some other plans working out). If I am there, I'll try to make the meetup.

I'm planning to be there and would love to attend a meetup. I'll be with Camp Happy Hour in the 2:45 & Geranium vicinity, and our bar will be open daily for (you guessed it) happy hour, so that's one option... None of my campmates are MeFites that I know of, but they're a friendly bunch of Californians and Australians. This will be our first year as an official camp.

yay!
I'll be there for sure. I'm camp leader of a smallish new theme camp, dust & stars (right near désoeuvrée at 2:45 & foxglove). one other member is a mefite.

(and of course we'd be happy to host it as well.)
posted by changeling at 2:04 PM on July 24, 2012

Maybe changeling's camp is a better idea, since she's camp leader and has been here longer... But hey we're neighbors, woo!
posted by désoeuvrée at 3:41 PM on July 24, 2012

Well I wont' be there this year (I figure it's probably best to take every 13th year off), and neither is the rest of SFGH so we can't host again. I'm sure it will be fun enough to make me wish I was going! Enjoy!

Oh yay! I'm in changeling's dust & stars camp and am excited to meet some mefite burners IRL.

aww, we'll miss you and your weird snacks, aubilenon!

We'll be back before long, with newer and weirder things!
posted by aubilenon at 12:23 AM on July 26, 2012

aubilenon, if you don't mind my asking, is your camp (which I unfortunately have never experienced--it sounds deliciously weird and weirdly delicious) taking the year off because of people not getting tickets? Just curious, since there seemed to be a lot of people saying things like that on eplaya (about their own camps I mean, not about SFGH).
posted by désoeuvrée at 8:04 PM on July 26, 2012

désoeuvrée: As it turns out, I don't mind you asking!

We're not a big camp, and a couple core members had already decided to take the year off before the ticket system was announced, so we were already probably going to skip a year anyway. I personally didn't get a ticket from the first round, but instead of queuing up for secondary sales through that system thing, I just went to Costa Rica instead. So: the ticketing stuff isn't why there's no SFGH this year, but it is why there's no aubilenon.
posted by aubilenon at 8:24 PM on July 26, 2012

Oh thanks for the info, and I hope you had fun in Costa Rica! It will be interesting to see how BM survives its growing pains...

Ok - sounds like dust & stars is a good bet for a mefite quorum.

changeling - do you all have a date/time preference?

3pm wednesday works for us! :)

(do you want me to make it official, or shall you? I can also memail mefites who went last year/attempted to go.)
posted by changeling at 12:41 PM on July 31, 2012

I'll be on playa, somewhat to my surprise, since I didn't even try to run the ticket gantlet. I rarely have any idea what time it is, or sometimes even what day it is, but I will come by if I can.

Confirmed! Changeling, let me know any more details about your camp that you want in the meetup and I'll update it.

Urf, I'm scheduled to be on a burning sky plane for a sky diver drop off ridealong at 1pm on wednesday, which might make it tough to make this.

But if any of you see Charlie the Unicorn out there (It's a two story unicorn car with a horn that shoots fire and a sound system, relatively easy to find...), I'm its sound guy and one of the resident DJs, so I'll be on it a lot... Stop by, ask for for erik!

I'm not going this year (sob), but I will be at the RNO airport at the AirPlaya desk greeting folks on Saturday, Aug 25 from 9 am to 12:00 pm. I also live up at Lake Tahoe and if anybody needs any gear, a pit stop, a shower, etc., I'd be happy to see if I can help out. Just memail me.

Aubilenon can vouch for me since I hosted some Mefites at a Tahoe sledding meet-up. I swear my oven is much cleaner now and I promise not to explode in flames.
posted by HeyAllie at 4:13 PM on August 2, 2012

(Also, I don't know of anyone that wanted a ticket who didn't get one. Both theme camps I'm tight with have surplus tickets showing up every day. Just like the non-panicky people said would happen...)
posted by flaterik at 4:16 PM on August 2, 2012

Thanks for the heads-up changeling! I'll be on the playa, but on the 9:00 side, so I make no promises :) We'll try to be there, though.

Dust and Stars, what a pitch-perfect and lovely name for your camp, changeling! I attempted to go to the MeFi meet-up last year and was sidetracked by Playa Time and shiny things. I'll do my best to make it out this go around, tho! désoeuvrée, looking forward to Happy Hour(s), too. I've never been to an IRL MeFi event and have always wanted to go. (However, I'm not sure how "R" Burning Man is--"I.SurR.L" seems a bit more fitting.)

Here's another invite for y'all: Come visit Furniture Car Rally Camp at 9:15 & Edelweiss. We RALLY at 4PM on Thursday. We'll be serving our signature drinks onsite at The Chevy Chaise Lounge, including The Stain Maker. If you miss the official festivities, just look for the WOW Couch zooming around, and shout out my name (Squirrelly) if you see a sparkly-bebooted lady at the wheel! The carbar (I mean Chevy Chaise Lounge!) will be in full effect at our camp at various times during the week - unless we're wandering off playing somewhere, which will be often. Swing by!

flaterik, I know some peeps in your camp...I'll stop by and say hey. Here's to La La love.

I'm coming to Burning Man this year. It appears the euroburnner's meet & great conflicts with this time though. Anyone know if 2:45 is terribly far from 7.30 on Foxglove?
posted by jeffburdges at 12:02 AM on August 6, 2012

hmm. we can definitely change the time, if it'll get more mefites out there. what do you guys think?
7:30's a decent hike, but there are many wondrous things to see on the way!
posted by changeling at 8:53 AM on August 6, 2012

I asked about the distance from 7.30 and Foxglove only because that's where the Euroburner meet up happens, not cuz I'm living there.

In fact, I've only just started searching for a theme camp, well only just got tickets friday. Any recommendations?

I'll try to squeeze in both meet ups whatever the times. Any idea how long people hung around last year?

As an aside, any other suggestions on finding, buying, etc. a ride out for Sunday night after the temple burn? Already filled out a request on rideshare.burningman.com.

I've a flight from Reno at noon on Monday 3 September, but the To Flame bus doesn't run any busses Sunday night. I originally booked this flight having missread that the temple burn happens around 3pm this year, actually it's only slightly earlier. I'd jump on a ride in that cost less than the $60 bus fare too, but that's of secondary importance compared with seeing the temple burn.

posted by jeffburdges at 1:24 AM on August 7, 2012

it's pretty late notice, but check the theme camps seeking participants board on eplaya. in particular there are a few low-key virgin camps & villages that'd be a great way to meet people. regarding rides, I'd have pointed you to rideshare but you have that covered. I'd also directly contact people who've posted that they're leaving sunday night.
(glad you're staying for the the temple burn! it's worth it for sure.)

people hung out about an hour at last year's meetup. very small group! like this'll be.
posted by changeling at 10:31 AM on August 7, 2012

I'll camp just around the corner with Future Camp at 2:30 and E anyways, so I'll certainly visit you guys even I cannot quite make the meet up.

Cool, will endeavour to be there.

I can't do Wednesday at all- the project I'm with has its big burn that evening- but I will come check out everyone's camps :)

I just have to remember to print this thread out and bring it with me.
posted by small_ruminant at 9:12 PM on August 20, 2012

I'll likely spend wednesday on the other side of the crescent since I'm sans bike, but I'll try wandering by people who post addresses too.

I haven't yet found a ride out for sunday evening so no clue yet about sticking around for the temple burn.
posted by jeffburdges at 3:42 AM on August 21, 2012

do you guys want to change the date or time? otherwise looks like it's not really happening. (especially when we're all on playa brain)
posted by changeling at 8:03 AM on August 21, 2012

Here's a map, for those of us who can't remember what a clock looks like. I never can. I wish I could post an image but a link will have to do.

I like the wandering idea but Dust and Stars on Tuesday or Thursday might work, too. We'll be camping not too far from Dust and Stars, as are a few of our locals, so it works pretty well.
posted by small_ruminant at 9:49 AM on August 21, 2012

I'll print myself a detailed schedule, and address list, entitled "Playa time" to be ritually lost as soon as I hit the dust, or before. I'll summarize the addresses posted thus far :

changeling & weeyin - Dust & Stars - 2:45 & Foxglove
désoeuvrée - Camp Happy Hour - 2:45 & Geranium
flaterik - G-Spot - 3 & Geranium ?? - Seek the Charlie the Unicorn Art Car
jeffburdges - Future Camp - 2:30 & Edelweiss
red_rabbit - Furniture Car Rally Camp - 9:15 & Edelweiss - Rally at 4pm Thursday

I should be around the neighborhood on Tuesday since I've a work shift at 2pm, which suggests I could wander over to Dust & Stars not too long after 3pm playa time, probably do so anyways. I'm happy with Thursday as well.
posted by jeffburdges at 1:09 PM on August 21, 2012

adding to the list:
marssaxman - Iron Monkeys - 5:30 & C - look for the amazingly fucked-up mutant tricycle machine, and the surly, megaphone-abuse-hurling campmates

we're having a (small, we're a small camp) post-apocalyptic homecoming tuesday night at sunset. would love to meet up before that, or you guys are welcome to stop by then. I'll arrive on the playa this saturday afternoon (EEK SO SOON) so if we switch the meetup time, I'll need to know asap. btw, I'm kir or wandergirl out there :)

sadly my mefite friend weeyin probably can't make it. although at least 5 of my campmates should be honorary mefites for how much I talk about the site.

while I am here, any super experienced burners have any brilliant dust & wind tips? besides your typical night/day goggles, masks, sealing tent mesh, rebar etc. I am down for some big storms -- love the surreality -- but a bit afraid of relentless moderate dust. seeing all the far-off shiny and the starry sky is my favorite.

(by can't make it I mean she had to drop off of brc altogether)

I've got a bar shift on Wed from 4-6 but ima try and make this.
posted by fragmede at 4:00 PM on August 23, 2012

changeling - I've been going since 2004, and even on the very worst years (2007 and 2008 were both pretty bad) the dust wasn't so bad that it's all I remember. I've never been when there's dust all night. never even seen a significant dust storm past like midnight or so. however, I have definitely seen 6-8 hour long daytime whiteouts on multiple different years.

late afternoon and early evening is when the worst hits, because of the convection currents from the mountains. sounds like you have it covered by way of preparation, but I'd just stress covering your communal camp stuff & securing it. we've tended to get bummed out midweek when our communal areas are just big giant dust piles.

Weather report looking not too bad.

The gspot is 7:45 and B! You'll never find it way over there ;)

Camp Charlie is 10 and G I believe. But the unicorn, he moves...
posted by flaterik at 1:07 PM on August 24, 2012

hooray and I will be there, but we aren't rolling in until Wed. Looks like we'll be in the neighborhood of many of you though, we're with the Galactic Jungle Camp - 2:30 & G. We'll also be joining in the Charlie Unicorn fun Wed evening.

I'm home, had an awesome time, AND.... completely failed to do anything l planned to do except the one day burn I was helping with. Sorry. My head is hanging. I hope I get to meet everyone IRL some other time.
posted by small_ruminant at 10:45 PM on September 1, 2012

I officially met no mefites on the playa. HOWEVER, weeyin (who made it!) and I did locate Charlie the Unicorn near the temple, but his creators/companions had never heard of the metafilter. ("like reddit? me-what? me-fight? there's a fight with reddit?")
posted by changeling at 10:37 AM on September 6, 2012

(haha, the metafilter)

Yup, I also met zero mefis and found Charlie sans eric. lol
posted by jeffburdges at 2:48 PM on September 6, 2012

I hope y'all that found Charlie had fun on it! My friends had enough trouble keeping track of me, so it's not too shocking I missed you. Sad, but not shocking.

I should tell camp about metafilter! I forget that not everyone is so internettedly enlightened.
