Calgary Stampede Meetup

Tue July 10 at 6:00 PM, Kawa
1333 8 St SW, Calgary, AB T2R 1M6, Canada (Map & Directions)
Stampede is on in Calgary in early July and promises to be a fiesta of people slacking off work early. May's meetup was fun, does anyone want to meetup again during Stampede week?
Open to suggestions of venues and activities from those who know Calgary better since I'm a Stampede n00b.

Looks like we're settled on 18:00 on July 10th (Tuesday) at Kawa. Let me know if you're coming.

I'm hoping to get up to the International Gay Rodeo Association event near Calgary next summer. Maybe we'll do a meetup then, too!

I won't be in the area this summer, sadly.

Wow, did I seriously just forget the link?

hippybear, let me know when you're in town and I'll buy you a beer.

I'm game.

Now that's a rodeo I'd like to see, hippybear.

I'm game for a meetup :)

I'm available that week apart from the evening of the 12th. How's everyone else's schedules looking?
posted by arcticseal at 11:38 AM on June 24, 2012

My schedule by then is open - but I am not let off-leash often, so have no idea which venue is good/grrreat...

I have no clue what's going on at all for me that week, perfectly willing to commit to whatever night gets picked

International Gay Rodeo Association Event near Calgary

I have no knowledge of that event, but I somehow feel certain that the wearing of chaps is involved.

I'm clear for the week, so any night is good.

The thing is that every alcohol-serving venue in the city becomes RAGING DRUNK HIJINX CENTRAL, summoning apparently every asshole in a hat from a 500 mile radius. Okay, I live 4 blocks from the grounds, so my perception is maybe a little biased. But it seems to me that we would be best served (assuming the goal is more like erudite conversation and less like getting hammered and throwing up minidonuts on the sidewalk outside my apartment building) at a coffee shop or similar, rather than a pub.

Maybe Kava? I've never really been, but they're large, open late and serve beer and wine.

Or, alternately, we could go into the belly of the beast and go to the actual Stampede grounds.

As usual I will try to make it for a meetup, but I live in Lethbridge and have a three month old baby so everything is a little touch-and-go. At this moment there aren't any particular nights that week that are better or worse for me.

The Kava suggestion is good, I've heard that Stampede is Cowtown's equivalent of Mardi Gras, so something a little out of the way and less prone to drunks on expenses would be good.

So, lizbunny and Homeboy Trouble are both tentative IGRA meetup attendees for next summer, along with arcticseal.

Excellent. Nothing like advance planning!

Yeah, if we book now, we may actually be able to get a reservation!

So at present, we have 4 with a tentative 5th if arcticbaby allows. Kava sounds good to me, anyone want to express a preference on day?

Depending on date and location, I may be able to attend. Looks like ms. shoes will be out of town that week, so I will be at loose ends, but without the car.

Any votes for Tuesday night, 10th July?

Works for me. And when I said Kava earlier, I was thinking of Kawa. It's pretty central, so it might work for never used baby shoes, without the car.

OK, let's aim for Tuesday night. What time works for people? Is straight after work at 18:00-18:30 good or does everyoine prefer a later start?
posted by arcticseal at 11:15 AM on July 4, 2012

I should be able to make that work! After work is awesome for me; I'll be hanging around downtown anyways.

great, see you then!

Is Kawa an 18+ venue? If not, I can just bring el nino with me.
posted by arcticwoman at 2:50 PM on July 6, 2012

Called Kawa, they said that they aren't 18+ so el nino is welcome up to 21:00. Hope you both can make it!

Damn, I really wish I could - ESPECIALLY since it's a child-friendly venue. Unfortunately, Jerram (the baby) has started this thing where he screams his bloody head off whenever we get into the car, and I can't handle that alone, never mind in Stampede traffic. :( Sorry for leading you on. Thanks for calling Kawa and checking for me.
posted by arcticwoman at 5:12 AM on July 10, 2012

Guaranteed he's not the only person screaming in Stampede traffic this week :) catch you next time hopefully.

I'm planning on getting there for 18:00 to stake out a table. I'll be the uncomfortable looking Brit in a black cowboy hat; yes, I succumbed to peer pressure at the office!
posted by arcticseal at 7:07 AM on July 10, 2012

Sorry you won't be able to make it arcticwoman. I was looking forward to having two of the "arctic"" usernames together on a day where the temperature will be over 30 degrees.

arcticseal, I'm aiming for about the same time. I'll be in a blue/white plaid shirt, grey shorts, and sandals.

lizbunny and I have arrived; sitting at a table for 4 to the right of the 8th street entrance

Good to see you all last night. I would have got home sooner if I could read my bus timetable and not gone to the wrong bus stop, but at least I got home!

Yes, that was a fun evening. Looking forward to doing it again. Not least because I need to watch the new Spiderman and potentially settle an issue with you, sir.
